How to install a starter retractor on a VAZ 2110 – Replacing the starter retractor relay on a VAZ 2110

Despite the fact that the VAZ-21124 has not been produced for a very long time, this car continues to be often found on sale, as well as on the roads. It is necessary to carefully monitor the condition of the vehicle's electrical wiring. This is especially true for the starter, retractor relay. There are many types of failure of the part in question.

The car in question ceased production relatively long ago, its wiring design is outdated. With high mileage, problems with the starter arise relatively often. Usually it does not turn for the following reasons:

  • the retractor device has failed;
  • poor contact;
  • Bendix failed;
  • The problem is in the ignition switch or other wiring components.

Most often, the retractor fails - it is a relay that controls turning the starter on and off. Checking its performance is relatively simple - just apply voltage directly to it. To do this you need to use a piece of wire. One end is connected to the positive terminal, the other to the retractor contact. If the relay is activated, clicks will be heard. If they are absent, we can safely say that it has failed.

It is also important to check for voltage at the starter contacts. Often the problem arises due to their oxidation. As a result, a sufficient amount of voltage is simply not supplied. As a result, it becomes impossible to carry out the process of starting the engine. To solve the problem, it will be enough to use special means.

It is not advisable to use WD-40. This will only make the contact worse. You should use compounds specially designed for treating contact surfaces:

  • ammonia alcohol;
  • Cramolin ContaClean;
  • Asidol;
  • Kontakt 60 or 100.

There are many other means for cleaning. They will allow you to easily remove all oxides from the surface of the contact group. The engagement of the engine, its flywheel and the starter shaft is carried out by the Bendix gear. It is he who turns the engine shaft and then the engine starts. To check the condition of the Bendix splines, you need to remove the starter. This process causes difficulties in some cases.

Sometimes power simply does not reach the starter itself. The reasons may lie in the ignition switch or a special power relay. If the voltage simply reaches the starter contacts, it is necessary to examine the ignition switch for burnt contacts and other malfunctions. You will not be able to complete many procedures on your own. Especially if you have no experience. A good solution would be to contact specialists.

Sometimes there are problems with bearings. It will be difficult to replace them on your own without using special pullers. The most difficult case of starter failure is overheating or short circuit of the winding. Needs replacement.

Original parts and their analogues: which is better

Despite the fact that this vehicle model ceased production more than 10 years ago, it is not difficult to purchase original starters made by AvtoVAZ. Moreover, their quality is not always higher than their analogues. Original part:

Manufacturer's namevendor codeOptionsCost, rubles
AvtoVAZ2112-3708010.9 bendix teeth 3 mounting boltsFrom 4 000

There are many analogues on sale from a variety of manufacturers. The cost fluctuates quite significantly. The following manufacturers have proven themselves to be good:

Manufacturer's namevendor codeOptionsCost, rubles
StartVolt2110-3708010-001.5 kWFrom 2 800
KENOKNV-3708010-312 kWFrom 3 000
ELPROM ELHOVOST2110E1.5 kWFrom 3 100

Bosch starters have proven themselves to be good. This manufacturer carries out quality control. There is no chance of purchasing a product that does not work. It should also be noted that different manufacturers may produce parts of different sizes.

For example, the Bosch starter is slightly larger than the KEHO starter. The price of the part will vary significantly depending on the manufacturer. The difference between the dimensions can be seen in the photo. Larger parts will be difficult to install.

How to change the solenoid relay on a VAZ 2110

Problems with starting the car, strange sounds or a “buzzing” sound after turning the key in the ignition switch are symptoms characteristic of a breakdown of the starter retractor relay. Failure does not always appear immediately. The device works normally for some time without showing any signs of malfunction. But at a certain moment everything changes, and the engine refuses to start.

In such a situation, the best way is to replace the solenoid relay. The question is how to do this on VAZ-2110 cars (watch the video on how to check and how to replace the solenoid relay below). The malfunction can manifest itself in different ways, namely: the absence of any action when trying to start the engine, the appearance of relay clicks, the inactivity of the starter, and so on.

Whatever the symptom, replacing the starter relay on a VAZ-2110 is not as difficult as it seems. At the same time, you don’t need to spend money on a service station - you can do all the work yourself, with your own hands.

What you need to know about the solenoid relay

The electric starter motor of the domestic “ten” is turned on remotely, through the clutch of the flywheel and the bendix. This is possible thanks to the action of the starter solenoid relay, consisting of the following components:

  • Two coils. One of them is retracting (connected to the control element), and the second is holding (connected to the control terminal).
  • Three systems (magnetic, contact and returning).
  • Pipes with anchor. The device consists of a core containing a copper winding. The ends of the wire are brought out to the terminal block. One of the wires is connected to the electric motor and the control contact, and the second is connected to the control terminal and the housing.

The best solution, if a malfunction is detected, is to replace the starter relay. The main thing here is to carefully approach the diagnosis and make sure that the reason is in the starter. This is logical, because starting problems are often associated with other troubles - discharge of the car battery, damage to the integrity of the wires, the appearance of scale, deterioration in the quality of contact connections, and so on.

How to check the starter

To verify whether the starter is working or not, you will need a battery and a pair of wires. The first step is to dismantle the starter, then take the first wire and connect it to the “plus” of the power source and one of the outputs of the solenoid relay. Attach the second wire to the negative terminal and connect it to the starter ground. The presence of a click indicates that the Bendix is working properly.

Pay attention to the nature of the sound. Ideally, the click should be quick and sharp. If it is tight and sluggish, we can confidently say that the mechanism is faulty.

You need to check sequentially: the operation of the starter, relay, armature, brushes and winding, bendix. How to check all these elements of the starter, video - read and watch here.

If the checks show a breakdown of the starter, go to the store to select and purchase a suitable spare part. If the device has a non-separable body, replacing the solenoid relay will be sufficient. In a situation where a collapsible starter is installed on the machine, proceed as follows:

  • Remove the screws that secure the relay housing cover. In some cases, use a soldering iron to disconnect the winding wires (if they do not allow you to remove the cover).
  • Check the condition of the power contacts. Often they are the cause of the malfunction. The best solution is to establish a new contact group. In a situation where the damage to the contact is minor, treat the surface with fine-grain sandpaper.
  • Assemble the product using the reverse algorithm.

How to choose a new solenoid relay

Please note that the retractor relay is located in the engine compartment and is mounted directly on the starter. Once you have found the device, all that remains is to change it. To eliminate mistakes when replacing the starter relay, remove the old assembly and take it with you to the store. This way you eliminate the risk of buying the wrong part. In addition, manufacturers put special markings on the solenoid relays, which simplifies the choice.

The part is fixed using 3 screws. To avoid complications in the future, buy four copper nuts and washers. The advantages of such products are resistance to burning, which simplifies subsequent twisting.

How to change the solenoid relay

To replace the solenoid relay on the “ten”, prepare a tool and do a number of preparatory measures.

To begin with, discard the mass (“minus”) of the car using the key to “ten”. After removing the contact, find the starter, which is mounted in the lower part of the engine compartment (in the space between the cooling system and the engine block). Next, proceed like this:

  1. Connect a couple of wires to the solenoid relay, then discard the red wire (coming from the male connector).
  2. At the back of the relay, tighten a couple of nuts using a thirteen wrench.
  3. Take a flathead screwdriver and use it to push the cord away from the front of the fastener.
  4. Release the relay and then move it to the side.

When doing this work, make sure that the core remains inside and the relay spring does not fall out. This moment, in the process of replacing the solenoid relay, causes the greatest difficulty for car owners. To install a new part, perform the same steps, but using the reverse algorithm. Please note that the old core remains in place, so the new relay is installed without it, but with a new spring.

  1. Now take a flathead screwdriver and screw the wires into the front of the relay.
  2. Next, connect to the wires and screw in the nuts using a “thirteen” wrench.
  3. At the final stage, tighten the nuts that secure the power wire and are connected to the male connector.

As you can see, replacing the starter relay is not difficult even for a beginner. To successfully complete the work, little is required - a tool, time and strict adherence to instructions. If difficulties arise, you can always use photo or video materials.

Often, a starter malfunction is associated with a failure of the solenoid relay. Replacing a part with your own hands on a VAZ-2110 is quite simple. You will need a set of tools and instructions are presented in this article.

The video will tell you about the detailed process of replacing the solenoid relay. Also, the video will tell you about all the subtleties and nuances of the procedure.

Starter replacement and installation procedure

Removing the part is not as easy as it might seem. If the car does not start and there is an inspection hole or a lift available, most of the operations can be carried out independently. There is the following standard algorithm:

  • it is necessary to remove the terminals from the battery - this will de-energize the wiring;
  • then the traction relay wire is disconnected;
  • using an end ratchet and a 15mm socket, you need to disconnect the fastening;
  • Then the starter can simply be pulled out.

Most operations can be carried out through the top - simply by opening the hood. But it is best to remove the terminals from below. This will significantly simplify and speed up the procedure. Figuring out where the starter is is not difficult. Just open the hood.

You just need to perform all actions carefully, avoiding sudden movements. Especially when disconnecting the power wires. Since these sudden movements can cause damage to the terminals. It is difficult to restore them, especially when there is little free space.

The process of installing a new starter is carried out in reverse order. The easiest way is to use a special scheme:

It is necessary to constantly monitor the condition of not only the starter itself, but the solenoid relay and other components of the wiring. This will avoid various problems and difficulties. It will be especially difficult to evacuate a vehicle away from the nearest service station or home. The cost of transporting a car is relatively high.

Contacts should be cleaned periodically. It is advisable to do this using special means. This will minimize the likelihood of problems occurring. There are special contact cleaning compounds available on the market. Their use will create tight contact between live parts.

Changing the solenoid relay on a VAZ-2110 with your own hands is quite simple, if you have the tools and the necessary knowledge.

Hello everyone! The solenoid relay on the gear starter of the VAZ 2105 (aka VAZ 2101) has failed because I couldn’t find anything on the Internet to unsolder 2 wires, so I decided to make my own review, so to speak, everything is simple, the most sensitive thing is flaring

In general, everything can be seen in the photo, so let’s start:

first remove the starter and unscrew the retractor (
it’s different on any car, so follow the instructions from the repair books for your car

general information

VAZ 2112 starter removal

As mentioned above, the starter provides current support due to permanent magnets. Producing a power of 1.55 kW, this element provides the starting frequency that is so necessary for the cylinders of the car’s power unit. Different motor types have different frequencies, but there is an average starting frequency. It is equal to 40-50 revolutions per minute, if we mean the operation of a gasoline engine, which is the VAZ 2112 engine.

Note. As a comparative example, diesel engines will require the starter to rev at 100-200 RPM.

Consists of the following components:

  • Permanent magnets in the amount of 4 pieces. They are mounted inside the starter and perform one of the important missions.
  • An anchor that rotates the flywheel, and with it the crankshaft of the car engine.
  • Brush unit with 4 brushes. Two of the brushes are called positive, two are called negative. The brush assembly is designed to provide electrical connection.

Note. This assembly has been proven to be one of the least reliable parts of the starter. It is the brushes that are the first to be questioned when the stator is performing poorly and are subject to testing, followed by replacement.

  • The planetary gearbox is the next component. It is also the most important element, as it is responsible for transmitting torque to the drive shaft. The gearbox itself consists of several gears that reliably perform their functions.
  • A drive that is designed to insert the stator gear into connection with the engine flywheel. The mechanism of this drive is located on the armature shaft.
  • Covers, front and back, which are cast mainly from aluminum, or rather from its alloy. The front cover is needed to mount the relay, which is connected to the drive through a plastic lever and ring. Brush holders are located on the back cover.
  • Solenoid relay, also called traction relay. Thanks to this component, the drive gear meshes with the ring gear. As soon as the driver turns the key, voltage will not flow anywhere, but to the windings (holding/retracting) of this relay. As soon as the contact relay closes, the pull-in winding is switched off.

Additional starter relay

In the VAZ 2112, the starter protection relay is not installed on all cars from the factory, but is now a popular additional starter protection:

  • The vehicle controller controls the switching on and off of the additional relay, it all depends on the crankshaft speed, as well as the time the engine is rotated by the starter
  • It happens like this: after turning the key in the lock to the “Starter” position, as soon as the crankshaft speed reaches 500 rpm, a signal is sent from the controller to the additional relay and the starter is turned on
  • Thus, after turning on the starter, it will work as long as the ignition key is in the “Starter” position for about 20 seconds, provided that the shaft speed does not increase to 500 rpm
  • This prevents accidental activation of the starter when the engine is already running, and also protects against overheating during prolonged operation.

In other words, it is necessary:

  • To protect the starter from accidental (long-term starting, or starting while the engine is running) due to sintering of the contacts inside the ignition switch
  • Also, to disconnect the power from the starter, in the case when the engine is running, and at this time the key, for some reason, is still in the “start starter” mode
  • It also relieves the load on the contacts in the ignition switch.

How to find out if your car has an additional starter relay:

  • First, check if it is in the mounting block
  • The second way to check its operation is to proceed as follows - rotate the starter in the mode for purging the cylinders, and after 12-13 seconds the starter turns off automatically

The brand of VAZ 21124 starter relay must be indicated in the operating manual. Additionally, if after studying the material there are still some points that are not entirely clear, we recommend watching the video.

Purpose of additional starter relay

There is an opinion that on cars with an old ignition switch (manufactured before approximately 2003, (the key is illuminated in the form of a green ring, and not a separate LED), there is no additional starter relay. However, on some new cars with ECU January 7.2 and higher, such an additional The starter relay is installed from the factory.

Here is what is written about this in the service manual for VAZ 2110, 2111, 2112:
