Replacing the cabin filter Ford Focus 3
Among the advantages of the second generation Ford Focus it was difficult to include the simplicity and convenience of replacing the cabin filter.
The need to remove the gas pedal assembly to perform routine maintenance seemed excessive to most owners. Replacing the cabin filter of a Ford Focus 3, fortunately, is easier, although a couple of inconvenient moments remain in the updated car. Another advantage of the third generation ventilation system was that carbon filters, which work much more efficiently, were already installed on the conveyor initially. But there is also a drawback here: in urban conditions, the carbon sorbent quickly wears off, and the odors of exhaust gases in traffic jams begin to penetrate into the car interior as easily as with a conventional filter. In such conditions, the standard 15 thousand kilometers of cabin filter life can easily turn into seven or eight.
Replacing the air filter Ford Focus 2
The second generation Ford Focus, although not produced since 2011, remains very popular on the roads. Since all cars have already expired from warranty, their owners either trust private services that are cheaper than the official ones, and perform many operations themselves. One of the simplest is replacing the air filter; Ford Focus 2 does not present any difficulties in this regard, and the work does not take up too much time.
Cars of this family were equipped with two types of filters, which were fundamentally different from each other: pre-restyling cars mostly used a compact rectangular filter, which showed an extremely short resource - the 15 thousand kilometers between maintenance declared by the manufacturer were rarely maintained even in average urban conditions, not to mention dusty ones. country roads. Therefore, on most cars, the filter was replaced with a cylindrical one, with a much larger area - for Germany these are cars produced after the end of March 2007, for the Russian assembly - from May 2007 (some cars with a 1.4 engine received old filters until January 2008). After updating the body in 2008, accordingly, all cars were equipped with only cylindrical filters.
Choosing an air filter for Ford Focus 2
The factory article number of the old rectangular filter is 1232496. This is essentially nothing more than a Knecht/Mahle LX1572 filter rebranded by the manufacturer, so such a replacement can be considered absolutely equivalent. Other high-quality analogues are Bosch 1457433323, Champion U793/606, MANN C28122. Considering the small area of the filter element, it is worth reducing the replacement interval to at least 10 thousand, especially on cars with the largest engine capacity in the series.
The updated cylindrical filter has article number 1708877 (later replaced by the manufacturer with 1848220).
It, like the previous one, was produced by the Mahle concern (non-original - LX1780/3), but there is an unexpected design difference between these filters: the Mahle filter has a small protrusion that makes it easier to center it in the box (the protrusion engages with the groove), The “original” is missing on many cars.
Direct analogues of other brands - Bosch F026400136, MANN C16134/1, Fram CA10521. The increased area of these filters allows them to confidently withstand service intervals of 15 thousand kilometers in normal urban conditions; only on extremely dusty roads is it worth reducing the replacement interval to 10-12 thousand kilometers.
The replacement procedure for cars with “old” and “new” filters is slightly different.
On vehicles with a rectangular filter, the air flow sensor is mounted directly on the filter cover. The simplest dismantling option is to remove the connector from the sensor (the ignition must be turned off!), after which the clamp of the rubber corrugation of the air duct is loosened.
Next, the screws (with a bat or a T25 screwdriver) located around the perimeter of the cover are unscrewed, and it rises to the top. The filter itself can be removed without special precautions, since its air intake is at the bottom, and dirt does not enter the intake manifold when removing the filter.
The new filter is placed in place, and for a tight fit it is advisable to clean the perimeter of the box into which the seal rests.
Next, the cover is put in place (the screws are tightened crosswise with a little force so as not to deform the plastic), the corrugation is put on the air flow sensor, and the connector is returned to its place.
For cars with an updated filter, the procedure is simpler: using a “7” head with an extension, unscrew the four screws around the perimeter of the box cover, after which it simply lifts up.
The filter is lifted by the right edge and removed from the ledge of the air duct, after which a new one is installed. The main thing is to center it correctly on the lip to ensure tight seal contact. As you can see, this operation is so simple that it will take no more than a minute.
The main inconvenience is the low rigidity of the filter box cover; it is not so convenient to insert it into the guide grooves. You also need to be careful when tightening, the plastic here is extremely easy to deform.

Choosing a cabin filter for Ford Focus 3
The Ford 1709013 cabin filter is installed on the car by the factory (and, accordingly, supplied as an original spare part). This is the case when the original spare part is not so expensive (on average it costs about 700 rubles), and there are no complaints about its quality: it is elastic ( accordingly, it can be twisted without danger when inserted into the interior heater box) and has a reliable seal around the perimeter.
However, it is not always on sale, so you may have to consider alternatives. One of the most common and popular is TSN 9.7.876, worthy of recommendations:
- Filtron K1350,
- MANN CU25007,
- Fram CFA11642,
- Corteco 80001773.
The Knecht LAK875 can be cited as a curiosity - of course, there are no complaints about the quality of this filter, but it also costs three times more than the original.
Replacing the cabin filter Ford Focus 3
A large number of tools are not required to complete the job. When changing the filter for the first time, you should stock up on a Phillips screwdriver and a Torx T15 bit to remove the filter cover - a self-tapping screw with a Phillips or Torx head can be installed, in the future you will already know which screwdriver to take with you.
So, we bought a cabin filter for Ford Focus 3; replacing it yourself will take a maximum of 10 minutes. We recommend stocking up on a flashlight or working in a brightly sunny place - this will be much more convenient. First, we remove the lining under the glove compartment - on the car it is secured with pistons, so it is better to do this in a warm place: frozen plastic is fragile, and this is not the only plastic part that will have to be dismantled. In winter, you need to keep the car warm for at least half an hour or heat the interior properly with a stove.
Having removed the trim panel, we move on to the side trim of the center console, which is located at the passenger’s left foot. By picking up the plug with a plastic spatula (or, in extreme cases, a thin flat screwdriver), you can pull it out towards you (it is held in place by four latches along the edges). A piston is hidden under it, which secures the cladding. It can be removed with a thin spatula or carefully pulled out of its socket along with the panel (this is easier to do in a warm place).
In the farthest part of the stove body, almost at the engine shield, there is a cabin filter cover. It is held at the bottom by a self-tapping screw, after unscrewing which you can pull the cover towards you and up by the eyelet, and then pull out the old cabin filter.
It is worth combining filter replacement with cleaning and disinfection of the air conditioner radiator: you should not wait for the characteristic musty smell to spread through the cabin, but carry out preventive maintenance in advance, especially since everything has already been disassembled.
To begin, use a narrow nozzle of a vacuum cleaner to clean as much of the cabin filter compartment as possible, then treat the radiator with an aerosol cleaner. They are sold with convenient flexible spouts that allow you to evenly spray the composition over the radiator area. You can make the composition yourself by mixing a pharmaceutical solution of chlorhexidine with any fragrance.
After waiting about 10 minutes for the mixture to drain from the radiator into the air conditioner drain, you can install the filter. This will be interfered with by the connectors of the fuse box, which, according to Ford tradition, is located under the glove compartment. A standard filter can be twisted and inserted into the compartment past them; with a non-original filter this may not always be possible - then you will have to disconnect them.

- rags.
Replacement process
As you remember, this component of the cleaning system in Ford Focus 3 cars is located to the right of the center console (on the passenger seat side).
- At the passenger's feet, directly on the left side of the console, there is a small hatch - 3 by 3 cm. We remove it first.
- Having opened the hatch, we see the lining clip, which also needs to be dismantled.

In general, such a process will take no more than an hour even for an inexperienced and “crooked” driver. But after replacing it, you will immediately feel that your stove has received a second wind.
Replacing the cabin filter in Ford Focus 2
When driving a car around the city, you have to inhale organic particles, benzene, sulfur, nitrogen, dust from worn brake pads, etc. To ensure that passengers and the driver do not breathe exhaust fumes and dust, the car's interior ventilation system is cleaned using a cabin filter and already purified air enters the cabin. If the filter is not changed in a timely manner, it becomes clogged and does not cope with its function.
When to change the filter on Ford Focus 2
claims that the original cabin filter is capable of purifying the air for a long time and recommends replacing it every time you change the engine oil. Service center specialists claim that this procedure should be performed more often - every 15 thousand km, and if the car is often used in urban mode (driving on dirt roads, in city traffic jams, etc.), then approximately twice as often. However, many experienced motorists advise to be guided not by mileage, but by the appearance of signs indicating the unsuitability of the cabin filter.
Such manifestations include:
- Weak air flow. A clogged filter is unable to pass a large air flow.
- Foreign odors. There are unpleasant odors in the cabin - this means that the carbon layer does not cope with its functions due to its contamination.
- Fogging of glass. This symptom most clearly manifests itself in the off-season; for this reason, experts recommend replacing the cabin filter in early spring or late summer.
Despite the fact that the retail chain offers a large selection of cabin filters, experts advise purchasing only certified products that can effectively purify the air inside the car. Otherwise, this will be a temporary solution to the problem.
Which filter is better
People often ask which filter manufacturer is better. Many car enthusiasts who replace the cabin air filter themselves choose between conventional and carbon filters. Both filters purify the air entering the vehicle interior.
A regular cabin filter prevents dust, soot, tire wear products, pollen and other harmful foreign particles floating in the atmosphere from getting into the car.
Coal protects against all of the above particles and, in addition, does not allow toxic substances to pass through - nitrogen oxides, phenol and benzene. Neutralization of these substances occurs due to the presence of activated carbon in the filter material.
A carbon filter is denser than a regular filter and therefore more durable.
It is usually installed in the summer - it cleans better. But in winter the fan can’t cope and the windows fog up.
Often the price of a carbon filter is several times higher than a regular one. It is better to install a regular one and change it more often.
Manufacturers chosen include MANN-FILTER, KNECHT or BOCH. The country of the MANN brand is Germany, but in fact it is produced in Poland.
There is no consensus on choosing the best filter - the decision remains with the car owner.
Which cabin filter to choose
How to choose and how to change the cabin filter of a Ford Focus 2 is a question that interests many car owners. Today there is a large selection of products on store shelves, but only some of them are suitable for their intended purpose. So how can you tell a real cabin filter from a fake?
Fakes
The most common fake is the branded Ford 1 cabin filter marked “354 953”. It is quite easy to distinguish it from the original:
- Sloppy, inaccurate Ford logo, color shift, poor printing.
- The packaging is made of crispy hard cellophane.
- The weight of the original filter is 300 g ± 10 g, the fake filter is 180-200 g.
- The original filter has 31 folds on the element, while the fake filter has no more than 20-22.
- There are no indications of the direction of correct installation on the end of the fake (no inscriptions or arrows).
- The fake filter is approximately 10-15 mm smaller in length and width than the original.
Such distinctive features will help you make the right choice of filter for cleaning the interior of your Ford Focus 2.
Originals
List of original cabin filters (carbon):
- Ford 1 354 953 – price from 990 rub.
- BSG BSG30145004 – from 450 rub.
- BIG Filter GB-9814 – from 320 rub.
- Delphi TSP0325305 – from 380 rub.
- Nac 77184-ST – from 430 rub.
- Delphi TSP0325305 – from 380 rub.
The procedure for replacing the cabin filter itself has many nuances, so even some experienced car owners may have difficulties.
Which cabin filter to choose?
If the cabin filter on a Ford Focus 2 is being changed for the first time, then most likely there is a simple filter element, which is recommended to be replaced with a carbon one, especially since the difference in price is not significant.
But the problem is that there are now a huge number of such products on the market, including fakes. Therefore, it is important to purchase either the original or a high-quality analogue.
Characteristics of the original Ford product 1 354953 - suitable for all versions of the 2nd generation car including restyling:
- 31 sweet;
- Weight 300g ± 10g;
- Width 208 ± 2 mm;
As a rule, fakes weigh no more than 200 grams, have 20-22 folds, and are 185-190 mm wide.
Poor quality printing and incorrect packaging may also indicate a fake, but to do this you need to know what the original product looks like.
Also, do not confuse it with the cabin filter for Ford Focus 3, which is 8 ± 2 mm smaller than the one needed.
Filtron K 1150 A, BSG BSG30145004, Delphi TSP0325305 and others are suitable as originals.
It is advisable to choose filters with a soft frame, this makes it easier to install them even without removing the gas pedal.
The process of replacing the cabin filter Ford Focus 2
The difficulty in replacing a Ford Focus cabin filter lies in the location where it is located. It is non-standard - not behind the glove compartment, as in many brands of cars, but on the driver's side, moreover, in a place that is inconvenient for work. The limited space in the instrument panel area makes unscrewing screws and bolts difficult.
- Disconnect the car from power by removing the positive terminal from the battery. The rest of the work on replacing the filter will have to be done on the floor of the cabin, facing the car pedals.
- Unscrew the three nuts that hold the electronic accelerator pedal. Before doing this, disconnect the connector connecting the computer to the pedal position sensor.
- After removing the connector and pedal, you will have access to the bolts that secure the cabin filter housing. Next you need to unscrew them and remove the old cabin filter. To do this you need to bend it a little. You need to be very careful when removing the filter, as dirt accumulated in it can get into the air duct and cause it to clog.

Let's start replacing
As mentioned above, the element of the cleaning system in the “second” Focus is located under the dashboard on the driver’s side. In particular, the compartment lid is located at the driver’s feet, near the gas pedal.
- We take the key to “10” and unscrew the three nuts to remove the gas pedal.
- Then move the pedal block to the side. Attention! It is not recommended to disconnect the block with wires from the pedal unless absolutely necessary! According to the regulations established by the manufacturer, the working life of this block with wires is limited to ten installation and dismantling operations.
- Moving the pedal aside, we see three self-tapping screws—they need to be unscrewed using the “7” key.
- Then remove the compartment cover and dismantle the component itself. It is recommended to remember the direction of the arrow on the element body in advance, since the new filter must be installed in an identical direction.
- We install a new element - for greater convenience, this can be done by squeezing it like an accordion.
- At this point, the replacement of the cleaning system component can be considered complete. Now you need to put everything back together in reverse order. Naturally, not forgetting the gas pedal.
Old and new filters for a Ford Focus car
Replacing the cabin filter Ford Focus 1
At each routine maintenance of your car, you should change the cabin filter. This is a procedure that will allow you to constantly breathe fresh air and prevent dust and even unpleasant odors from entering the cabin. In modern cars, a cabin air filter is required, which becomes clogged over 10-15 thousand kilometers, becomes damp and deteriorates in every possible way. This means that you will have to breathe unpleasant air, endure foggy windows and experience other inconveniences in operating the vehicle.
Replacing the Ford Focus 1 cabin filter can be a difficult task for those who have never performed this work. You just need to follow the instructions and perform the tasks step by step in order to complete all the work correctly once. You can also watch how a master performs this procedure once. You will be able to understand how the cabin filter is removed from its installation location and inserted without damaging the delicate working part.
Cabin filter
The main purpose is to clean the air entering the ventilation system from various mechanical impurities. Like any filter element, this part needs to be replaced. The manufacturer has established an average service life of 1 year. When operating vehicles in highly polluted air conditions, such a filter element can be replaced more often.
Signs of contamination
During vehicle operation, the filter element in the ventilation air cleaning unit becomes clogged. The main signs that the Ford Focus 2 cabin filter is clogged may include changes such as deterioration in the efficiency of the heating module and air conditioner or the accumulation of condensation on the inner surface of the windshield. In such cases, its replacement is simply necessary. Considering the simplicity of the technical operation and the fact that the price of the filter element is low, it can be replaced more often without expecting obvious signs of contamination.
What do you need to replace the cabin air filter?
No special tool is needed to perform this procedure. To do this, it is enough to buy the filter itself and have several flat-head screwdrivers that will help you get to the installation location of this part.
It is difficult to give advice and recommendations on the choice of filters. The devices are conventional and coal. There are no special tips; you need to choose based on price and your own preferences. It is better to take filter elements from MANN, Knecht, Bosch and other similar companies. This will ensure high efficiency and long service life of the cabin air purifier.
How to replace the cabin filter on Focus 1?
Many owners find it difficult to decide where the Ford Focus 1 cabin filter is located. The filter device is located on the passenger side. You can get to it from the engine compartment. There is a protective plastic part covering the filter housing in the area where the power steering reservoir is installed. It should be noted right away that all work should be done very carefully. Otherwise, you can break one of the fastening elements, which will neutralize any benefits from doing this work yourself.
The process for replacing the filter device is as follows:
- Using a screwdriver, carefully unfasten the latches of the plastic trim, which is located in the windshield area under the outermost part of the hood. You need to act carefully; latches break very often.
- Next, use your hands to push the front cover of the air filter housing towards you. Do not rush to remove the filter, look at how it is installed and remember its position, or better yet, take a photo.
- Install a new filter. To do this, look at the filter itself for the direction of air flow (indicated with the mark Airflow). Install the filter into the housing with the arrow with the flow direction pointing down.
- Insert the filter element as carefully as possible so as not to damage its working part, and also pay attention to the absence of gaps or incorrectly inserted parts of the cleaner.
- Use your hands to snap the front cover of the filter housing into place. It latches a little tightly; very often performers leave the lid open without latching it completely. This reduces the efficiency of air purification and leads to dust getting onto the filter itself.
- Install the plastic panel that was removed in the first step. Also, snap it tightly and check the reliability of installation.
There is nothing complicated in this procedure, but you need to do everything correctly and efficiently. If you carry out the work without checking the quality of installation and snapping of parts, problems associated with air passage and poor quality air purification in the cabin are quite possible. Choose high-quality filter elements according to the VIN code for your car, otherwise the device will not fit in shape or will have play in the body.

Tools
If you decide to change an element of the air system in a Ford Focus 1 car with your own hands, then prepare in advance:
- flat screwdriver;
- new cabin filter.
Replacement process
So, we change the element of the interior cleaning system with our own hands:
- First of all, you need to open the hood.
- Now take a flat-head screwdriver and use it to carefully disconnect the fasteners on the plastic cover. This must be done carefully, since the latches are too fragile (especially if you are replacing in cold weather).
Filter location in Ford Focus 1
- Having disconnected the fastenings, we dismantle the gasket and see the old element of the cleaning system.
- Then we pull the front side of the element body towards us and remove it.
- We take a new component, the arrows on its body indicate the direction of the air flow, and place it so that the arrow points downward.
- You need to check the correct installation - the component must be installed evenly in the case, there should not be large gaps on the sides.
- Close the front wall of the component.
New filter in Ford Focus 1
Important! When replacing the plastic trim, you need to keep in mind that its rubber seal must fit snugly against the windshield. Otherwise, the filter will regularly get wet in rainy weather, and this, in turn, will lead to malfunctions in the interior ventilation.
Bottom line – is it worth replacing the cabin filter yourself?
Now you know how to change the cabin filter of a Ford Focus 1. This procedure is simple, it does not require special skills or any special tools. Therefore, you can safely do it yourself. It is important to carry out all work carefully, and to unsnap and snap all plastic fasteners as carefully as possible. If you break one of the case mounts, you will have to buy this expensive part. With a plastic cover things are simpler, but a broken mount will clearly not improve your mood.
This procedure is quite simple, and the service will charge you about 500 rubles for completing it. So you can safely do the work yourself and not worry about not being able to complete the procedure. This is one of the easiest parts of regular Ford Focus 1 maintenance.

Well, I changed the interior.
The base comes with a simple filter from the factory.
Now how to change.
You will need heads 10 and 7 with ratchets and a small extension. It is not convenient to change. If the car is on the ground, you need to lie with your back on the driver's threshold. 1. Unscrew the 3 nuts (10) securing the gas pedal. 2. Unscrew the three screws securing the filter cover (it is in the center behind the “beard”). 3. remove the filter. 4. Insert a new one, squeezing it like a pot. 5. put everything in its place.
With some skill, skill and manual dexterity, you can do it in 15 minutes. There is little desire to change it again yourself - looking at the price tag for a replacement - it seems to cost 35 euros, taking into account the cost of the filter (
25$) maybe it’s worth entrusting this work to servicemen..
I'll post photos of the filters tomorrow.

You need to take your foot off the gas pedal! the procedure is well described HERE!
To unscrew the upper nuts securing the gas pedal, you need a cardan extension for the head of the wrench, or even better (I use one myself) instead of a cardan there is a flexible steel cable as such an extension in some locksmith tool kits
I changed the spark plugs and cabin filter yesterday.
Briefly: the spark plugs are changed once in 15 minutes, replacing the filter took more than an hour.
I changed the spark plugs with a key for 16-valve tens for 60 rubles, the access is simply super - everything is very convenient, easy and without problems, the spark plugs had a brown-red coating without traces of breakdown or other shortcomings.
Mileage 13 thousand. The reason for the replacement was that it took longer to start than it was on the new one, double start with the climate control on in the cold in the morning, and, as it seemed, a deterioration in dynamics..
I don’t advise anyone to change the cabin filter because replacing it reminded me of replacing the heater radiator on a nine without dismantling the dashboard.
If you still decide, you need a set of good tools with cardans for small heads 10 and 7 and ratchets. All nuts are self-locking, just tighten them with your fingers, then use the head on a fine thread. With self-tapping screws for fastening the filter cover, it’s finally fucked up - a short head for 7 with which the key is all time is running out. While working, my hands kept getting numb and I had to warm up in the cold.
The old filter, due to its uselessness, is simply barbarically torn out of its place (just kidding, carefully but decisively) and, squeezing the new carbon one with an accordion, we insert it into place. The gas pedal was stuck on the wires all this time, because I had read a lot about glitches with further starting if it was removed based on the experience of the Sea Max.
In short, it's not convenient. But now I’m thinking: maybe I can buy a good tool with the money I saved. otherwise the standard box with An 24 no longer rules..
Replacing the cabin filter Ford Focus 3
The owners of the third Focus are in a sense lucky, since the cabin filter is located in a standard place - behind the glove box. Those who drive a Ford Focus 2 have to bother a lot more, and not so much because of the non-standard location of the filter element, but because of the inconvenience of the replacement operation. On the Ford Focus III, everything is done much easier and much faster. Of course, if you have extra money and time (or don’t want to do it yourself), you can contact any service center, but most car owners prefer to make the replacement on their own, fortunately, it’s really not difficult. In garage conditions, this will require only a Phillips screwdriver and, of course, straight hands.

Changing the cabin filter on a Ford Focus 2: differences between restyling and pre-restyling
After that we put everything back together. When we turned on the stove we were surprised. Ford Focus heater how to change the cabin filter works like new. The carbon filter, in addition to performing rough filtration of the air, cleans it at the bacterial level.
It is able to neutralize exhaust odors and other unpleasant odors. Compared to a conventional dust filter element, one side of the carbon filter is darker, but it clogs faster, especially if you operate the Focus in conditions of heavy smoke and dust.
When to change the filter on a Ford Focus 2 A, according to science, the filter element is changed after 20 thousand km, but in fact, when it becomes unusable.
The difference between a used filter and a new one.
How to choose a cabin filter for Ford Focus 3
The average owner of a passenger car, regardless of experience, takes a fairly responsible approach to that part of vehicle maintenance that concerns the operation of the power unit. For example, oil changes are done on time in most cases, and the same applies to the air filter. But the cabin filter is no longer associated with a part that affects the performance characteristics of the power unit. Accordingly, much less attention is paid to it. However, the culture of car ownership is gradually improving, and the global trend focused on ecology is forcing our compatriots to treat their own health with due reverence.
A brief excursion into the history of the automotive industry allows us to find out that such a useful innovation as a cabin filter has a very short history - they were first installed on production cars only in 1991. The first filter elements were made of special paper without impregnation, which made it possible to prevent the penetration of dust and other fine particles into the cabin with a certain degree of efficiency.
The revolution in materials science has not spared the automotive industry, and the modern Ford Focus 3 cabin filter is strikingly different from its predecessors. In principle, the classification of cabin filters involves dividing them into two large categories:
- conventional ones, allowing to protect the interior from the penetration of dust and other pollutants;
- improved, preventing the penetration of unpleasant or unwanted odors from the outside.
The former belong to the budget category, the latter are much more expensive and contain layers with appropriate impregnation and activated carbon, capable of adsorbing molecular structures responsible for the transmission of odors.
Of course, if finances allow, it is better to purchase an original cabin filter - this product with catalog number 1709013 costs from 620 rubles, but an even more useful acquisition will be the improved Ford cabin filter (No. 1776360), the cost of which starts at 1,500 rubles. Both filter elements belong to the carbon class, but in the second case we are dealing with an improved model, with an increased content of activated carbon and a deodorizing additive. It is able to much more effectively resist the penetration of foreign odors into the car, not to mention protection from dust, pollen and other pollutants. At the same time, you will be 100% sure that no problems with geometric dimensions will arise.
When does a Ford Focus 3 cabin filter need to be replaced?
If you follow the instructions from the manufacturer, the installation of a new filter element to replace the clogged one should be performed every 20-30 thousand kilometers. Considering the difference in the condition of the roads there and here, this figure can easily be divided by 1.5, and if the car is forced to spend a lot of time in traffic jams, then even doubled. There is an alternative opinion, tested by many owners of the third Focus - replacement should be done twice a year, and preferably before the onset of the off-season (at the end of summer and winter).
Over time, the cabin filter inevitably becomes clogged, its throughput deteriorates, which leads to a decrease in the efficiency of blowing the cabin with cold air in summer and warm air in winter. In addition, carbon filter elements that adsorb “aromatic” chemical compounds become so saturated with them over time that they themselves become a source of unpleasant odors inside the machine. It is this symptom that can be called one of the signs indicating the need to replace the cabin filter of a Ford Focus 3. If this is not done, you will breathe air that will not only smell “unpalatable”, but also pose a real threat to health, before just the driver.
Of course, it is wrong to focus only on average statistics, since the condition of the filter is influenced by many related factors: from the prevailing weather conditions in a given region to the driving style of the vehicle owner, from the frequency of use of the car to the type of road surface on which you have to drive. It is clear that driving on unpaved roads significantly shortens the service life of the air/cabin filters.
Symptoms of a clogged cabin filter
The following signs indicate that the filter element needs to be changed:
- the appearance of a large amount of dust in the cabin, which is noticeable even without direct sunlight;
- an unpleasant odor that cannot be eliminated by ventilating the car also indicates the need for immediate replacement;
- the speed and power of the air flow has decreased when the ventilation is turned on, the stove or air conditioner is running;
- fuel consumption has increased.

Before replacing the Ford Focus 3 cabin filter, we stock up on the following tools:
- Phillips screwdriver;
- a small amount of rags;
- car vacuum cleaner.
Since the question of where the Ford Focus 3 cabin filter is located is irrelevant for most owners of this model, you can safely begin work in the following sequence:
- it is necessary to find a small hatch measuring 30x30 mm in the area where the front passenger’s feet are located and dismantle it;
As you can see, there is nothing complicated; even for an untrained user, this procedure will take a maximum of 20-30 minutes. We can say with a high degree of confidence that after replacement, both the stove and the air conditioner will regain their previous efficiency.Note that the cost of these works at a service station will be approximately equal to the cost of the filter itself, that is, you will have the opportunity to save about 500-1000 rubles. If you have never done this before, it is advisable, before changing the cabin filter of a Ford Focus 3, to study video materials on this topic - this will give you confidence in your abilities and significantly simplify the task.
Algorithm for replacing the cabin filter
If we talk about the procedure itself, it really has many nuances that can cause difficulties even for a fairly experienced and trained car owner. The point is not only where the Ford Focus 2 cabin filter is located (its location is really non-standard - not behind the glove compartment, but on the driver’s side, and in a very inconvenient place for work). The problem also lies in the limited space, which makes simple operations of unscrewing bolts and screws difficult to perform.
But first things first. The only tool we need is a 10mm socket socket equipped with a ratchet. But perseverance and patience will be even more useful, although you can express your sympathy in advance to the designers, who will certainly have to deal with many unfavorable statements, sometimes expressed in verbal form. So let's get started:
- First, we turn off the power to the car by removing the positive terminal of the battery (you may need to use a wrench);
- the rest of the work will have to be done by positioning yourself on the floor of the cabin with your head towards the vehicle control pedals. The most comfortable position for work is face up, but due to insufficient space, it is impossible to stay in this position for any long time, so be prepared for frequent forced breaks;
- the first thing you need to do is unscrew the nuts that secure the electronic accelerator pedal (three in number);
- before removing the pedal itself, you need to disconnect the block connecting the on-board computer to the pedal position sensor - if this is not done, then the un-removed terminal may cause an error, which will be reflected in loss of sensitivity when pressing the gas pedal (at least on over a hundred or two kilometers after the replacement);
- After removing the connector and the pedal itself, you will have access to the bolts that secure the cabin filter housing. We unscrew them and try to remove the used filter element. To do this, you will have to bend it a little, fortunately, it is enclosed in a flexible plastic frame;
- Removing the Ford Focus 2 cabin filter should be done extremely carefully, since dirt accumulated in it can get into the air duct if it is not moved properly, causing it to clog. Cleaning a corrugated hose will be extremely difficult, even if you use a vacuum cleaner. And there is no need to explain the dangers of even partial blockage of the air duct;
- If you think you have done most of the work, you are deeply mistaken. Inserting a new cabin filter into its original place is an even more difficult task, especially if you purchased a non-original consumable. The problem is that they are made of a material that is significantly less flexible than the original one, and the filter will have to be deformed.
To make the process easier, it is recommended to lubricate the edges of the frame on which the filter rests with something like WD-40. Surely you will be able to squeeze it in with great effort, and usually this stage is considered the most talkative with all sorts of bad expressions addressed to the car's designers. The difficulty also lies in not damaging the filter on the pedal mounting part. So you will need jeweler's precision combined with a fair amount of ingenuity;
- if the installation of the filter element in its original place is successful, you can perform all other operations in reverse order,
- When screwing on the decorative filter cover, you do not need to be overzealous: if you apply a lot of force, you can easily tear off the thread, since the metal is soft. It is advisable to use a socket with a not very long wrench, then it will be easier for you to control the forces applied to the wrench;
- putting the pedal back in place will be much easier - there are no pitfalls here, except for clogging the threads
Note that many owners of the restyled version of the Ford Focus II (that is, a car produced in 2008 or later) are not aware whether the changes affected the part of the car that relates to the cabin filter. If anything, the dashboard is a little different. We hasten to reassure them: replacing the cabin filter on a restyled Ford Focus 2 is no different from the procedure described above, since its location has not changed, despite complaints from the owners of the second Focus, it is still located at the accelerator pedal, so the algorithm we have given with all its difficulties and problems remained relevant.
Now you know how to replace the cabin filter of a Ford Focus 2 and have an approximate idea of what difficulties you will have to face, and this is already important if such a procedure is being performed for the first time. In any case, there is no need to spend a lot of money and time visiting a service center, since you can make the replacement yourself. Of course, the second and subsequent times, when you get the hang of it, the whole operation will take you no more time than if the cabin filter was located in the heater area behind the glove box.
Replacing the cabin filter Ford Focus 2
Replacing cabin filters on Focuses 1 and 3 is not difficult. Focus 1 has a filter located under the hood on the passenger side. For Focus 3 it is located in the cab on the driver's side under the glove compartment. But for Ford Focus 2 it is located to the right of the gas pedal.
You can replace the cabin filter without removing the gas pedal, but to do this you need to be super gutta-percha and not overly well-fed. The removed pedal will make the work easier, but not by much. There are some nuances here.
For cars with high mileage, the number of filter replacements can be up to ten times. It is not a fact that you will be able to unscrew the nuts with ease. Yes, and you can easily break the thread on a stud. We will try. If it doesn't work, we'll replace it without removing the pedal. Let's begin.
- Move the driver's seat to the rearmost position. Using a 10 mm socket with an extension, unscrew the gas pedal mount (circled with arrows). Do not touch the nut circled in green. The diamond designates the connector with the electronic throttle control wiring harness.
- Carefully remove the pedal. Be careful not to break the wires. You can release the connector. If the harness is long, then you don’t have to disconnect it. We remove the gas pedal to the side. We unscrew the three self-tapping bolts with a 7 mm head and an extension. Remove the filter cover.
- We carefully take out the filter, look at the condition, read the inscriptions and determine whether there was an original filter or a different one. We put the filter in place. The arrows on the filter indicate the direction of air flow - into the cabin. By the way, the original filter from Focus 2 is also suitable for later models - Ford Focus 3. The only thing is that they added additional pads on the sides for a tighter fit.
The original filter has an article number 1494691. Filters of good quality are from well-known brands: Bosch, Filtron, Hans Price, Patron. All these filters are carbon filters, they retain substances harmful to health well and do not allow substances that are harmful to health to enter the cabin. Change at least every 10,000 km.
How to change
Step-by-step instructions for replacing the filter.
- Using a 10mm socket, unscrew the 3 nuts on the gas pedal. Do not disconnect the block with wires on the gas pedal! The manufacturer has limited the service life of the connector - after 10 disconnections, the electronic gas pedal unit will need to be replaced.
- Move the pedal to the side.
- Using a 7 mm socket, unscrew the 3 screws from the cover.
- Remove the compartment cover and gently pull the cabin filter.
- We are looking for the arrow on the new filter. Air is blown into the car from the engine side, so the filter should be installed with the arrow facing the passenger compartment. The filter can be twisted and crushed with an accordion so that it fits into place.
- Close the lid and screw in the screws.
- Secure the pedal.

Replacing the cabin air filter on any modern car is a mandatory procedure.
Such a replacement is carried out in the service during maintenance without fail. But you can change the cabin filter yourself. To do this, you just need to know the reasons for its contamination and the service life of this element.
The following two tabs change content below.
I'm just sick of cars. I try to study in detail every car I have owned. I enjoy driving at night on city streets. I try to do my own repairs on my cars!
Signs of contamination
- It blows weakly when turned on.
- An unpleasant odor spreads into the cabin.
- Condensation accumulates on the windshield.
These signs are among the main ones that may appear when the filter has reached the end of its service life. But you shouldn’t wait for such signs to appear, but you need to change the filter more often.

Choosing a cabin filter
Regular cabin filter.
You can often hear the question from car owners, which filter is best to install in the cabin? There is a choice between a carbon and a regular filter. Both of them can clean the air entering the cabin well.
A conventional filter cannot prevent dust, soot, pollen and other substances that are in the atmosphere from entering the cabin.
, a carbon filter can also capture nitrogen oxide, benzene and phenol. This type of filter is more durable than a regular one. Its cost is also much higher. It is recommended to give preference to products that are manufactured in Germany or Poland.

Air filters Ford Focus 2
Air filtration is of great importance because as it passes through the filter, it is cleared of small grains of sand and dust. However, if the air filter has worked for a long enough time, it becomes so dirty that it can no longer fully perform its main function.
It is believed that the process of replacing some elements of a car, at first glance, seems labor-intensive, however, if you look into this in detail, there will be nothing difficult in carrying out such an operation. “Air” also belongs to this element.
Kinds:
- cabin filter (cleans the ventilation system);
- air filter (cleaning the air entering the engine).
So how to change the cabin filter of a Ford Focus 2?
Necessary tool
To dismantle the old and install a new filter element, you do not need any special accessories.
To do this, it is enough to have two heads with an internal hexagon of 7 and 10, a mechanical or electrical device for unscrewing bolts and nuts. You should also purchase the filter element itself.
Since the niche where the Ford Focus 2 cabin filter is located is in a fairly dark place, the presence of a flashlight will greatly facilitate the replacement process. Let's look at the process of replacing the cabin filter of a Ford Focus 2.
Step-by-step instruction
Such a technological operation is not a complex technical process that is associated with any difficulties. To replace the filter element of the cabin ventilation system on a car of this model, you must follow the following sequence:
- First you need to remove the gas pedal, which makes access to the cabin filter assembly difficult.
To do this, you need to unscrew the fastening nuts that secure the gas pedal, after which you need to remove it and move it to the side. When unscrewing the nuts, you need to use a special wrench with a 10-mm head. The connector should not be disconnected from the gas pedal, as this can lead to a malfunction of the electronic module, the cost of which is much more than the price of the filter element. - After this, using a 7 socket socket, unscrew the screws securing the filter element cover. The cover is located in a dark place, so when unscrewing and installing it, it is better to use a flashlight or a carrying case. Then you need to remove the lid and set it aside. After this, with careful movements you need to remove the old filter element from its installation location.
- In practice, replacing a filter involves installing a new element to replace the old one. Next, you need to carefully consider the direction of the arrows on the new filter element. The correct position of the filter in the air duct cavity is considered to be one in which the indicator arrows are directed into the interior of the cabin. Having decided on the position of the element, you need to carefully push it into its installation location.
- Then you should install the parts removed during disassembly.

In general, the process of replacing such a filter element is not accompanied by any technical difficulties, so you can replace it yourself.
Air filter
Purification of the air entering the engine is carried out by means of an “air blower”, either in the form of a cylinder, or a paper form, in the form of a flat rectangle. Subsequently, designers began to use the second type, since cylindrical filters have a large filter surface in relation to their size. Filters for cleaning the air entering the engine have their own classification.
In practice, car enthusiasts most often use advanced filters that, if the air flow deteriorates, do not interfere with the operation of the engine.
Therefore, advanced filters are successfully used, such as:
- zero resistance filter, which is subsequently installed in a standard box;
- a filter that does not provide resistance, but is installed separately;
- remote
What makes these filters different from others is that they are made from high-quality materials, so they continue to work well regardless of the conditions. But in order for them to continue to work effectively, they need to be lubricated periodically.
They also differ in installation, and the choice of one filter or another depends on the preferences of the car owner.
Why change the air filter?
What happens if you remove the air filter and continue to drive the car? If you open the hood of a car, especially during the dry summer period, what do we see? A layer of dust. On everything.
If the car were operated without an air filter, then a fair amount of this very dust would be sucked inside the cylinders and, together with the lubricant, would cover its inner walls with a thin layer at each suction stroke.
When the piston ran through such a mixture of oil and dust, the effect would be exactly the same as if an abrasive had been poured into the engine. Naturally, with such work, the resource of both the cylinder and the piston will not last long.
But before it gets into the cylinder, this sandblasting mixture will also “treat” the intake valves.
Saving on replacement doesn't do any good either. If the replacement filter element is heavily clogged, the engine does not receive the required amount of air and the air-fuel mixture becomes rich, which leads to incomplete combustion of fuel and, as a consequence, to additional fuel consumption and loss of power.
How often do you change the air filter?
The Ford Focus 2 air filter, according to technical regulations, is replaced after every 60 thousand kilometers, but at least once every 3 years. When choosing the frequency of replacement, it is worth considering the area in which the car is operated. If you often drive on dusty roads, experts recommend changing the filter twice as often.
Selection and price
Selecting spare parts is a responsible undertaking. Especially given the diversity that has recently taken place in our trade. In particular, for the car model in question, air filters are produced by companies located all over the world. The price range is as wide as the geography of factories.
However, when choosing an air filter, you need to pay attention to a number of features:
- what filter element is used, because the quality of air purification depends on this. They are predominantly chosen with non-woven material, since here the degree of purification is more than 90%, as for analogues, it is much lower there;
- quality of the filter element. It must be durable and reliable, in addition, it is recommended to stick to the choice of filters from good, trusted manufacturers and settle on one option;
- installation housing dimensions.
It is up to the owner to decide which air filter is best installed on the car. But practice proves that the most acceptable option is the original, the price of which is about 20 dollars - although it is more expensive than the analogue, it is better for your car.
The price of a non-original model ranges from 8 to 15 dollars.
Popular manufacturers:
- air filters are more expensive, but with internationally recognized quality: you can buy English PURFLUX from 500 rubles, or, for example, American FRAM for about 450 rubles;
- cheaper goods are filters made in Poland KAMOKA, or, say, Turkish PATRON; their cost starts from 250 rubles;
- The middle ground in price, but not in quality, not much inferior to the leaders, would be the German BOSH with a price of 400 rubles.
Where is it located?
The job of replacing the Ford Focus 2 air filter is not difficult. In principle, a person with basic technical skills can easily perform it on their own. Where is the air filter located on the vehicle in question? It is visible immediately, you just lift the hood. On the driver's side near the battery in a plastic case.
Replacement process in stages:
- First you need to gain access to the replacement filter element. However, before removing the filter housing, it does not hurt to pay tribute to technical culture - to wipe the housing itself from dust and dirt deposits. Two minutes of working with a rag ensures that fine sand and other dirt will not get into the purified air cavity.
- Along the perimeter of the cover there are four fixing bolts (most often a cross-head screwdriver). They need to be unscrewed. They are securely fixed in the housing, so they will not fall on the engine.
- After the cover is removed and the filter element is removed, wipe the interior with a clean rag.
- Install a new filter element.
- The cover is returned to its place in the same sequence.
