Replacing the fuel filter on a Ford Focus 2, diesel TDCi 1.8

Replacing the fine and coarse filter of the fuel pump in a Ford Focus 2

Tools:

  • Large flat screwdriver

Parts and consumables:

  • Coarse fuel filter
  • Fuel flask (housing)
  • Container for draining gasoline
  • Rags
  • Hairdryer

Notes:

The whole epic began with the fact that I was driving along highway 110, and when I pressed the shoe to the floor, the revolutions did not rise above 3k and the car jerked. Somehow I got home and started looking through the Internet. Good people immediately said, change the fuel pump filters. After reading more than one BZ, I decided that I had nowhere to remove the tank, and the tank was full at that time.

It was decided to cut a hole under the passenger seat.

1. I was glad that I didn’t have to wait, I reached under the seat, took it off, removed the pockets, began to move the carpet and was a little dumbfounded. Everything was already cut out!

The car's mileage is currently 136,668 km. I bought it a year and a half ago with a mileage of 116 km. Before that, I went to MSC for 6 years and in my city for a year. And at that moment I didn’t know whether to be happy or sad. But then, thinking that my conscience was clear, I realized that the hole saved me about 40–50 minutes of time. Having prepared the car, I went home. The next morning my father and I came to the parking lot.

2. I read that when you remove the pipe that supplies gasoline to the main line, almost half a liter pours out of it. They covered everything with rags, began to move the hose, and, lo and behold, a couple of drops dripped from it. Probably because the car sat overnight.

3. We began to unscrew the pump cover. Many people hit it with a hammer, but it was difficult for us, but it came from our hands.

4. Then they carefully began to remove the pump, for fear of bending the float. The float can be easily removed, there is a clamp there, we snap it off and slide it out of the groove.

5. We drained the gasoline from the sump. I shined a flashlight into the tank, there are no rags and it seems clean.

6. Arriving home, we began to disassemble it. Having removed the sump, we saw dirt and sand. Accordingly, the coarse mesh was no longer suitable.

7. I ran to the store for spare parts. I came, and right before I arrived the man took 2 flasks at once. Well, I ordered a flask, bought a coarse filter and went to install it. We changed the filter, installed everything, the car became easier to drive in the heat, but the light brake remained.

8. After 2 days the flask arrived. Both a flask and a coarse filter are ordered. They come included.

9. They started removing the pump again, but the car had not been parked overnight. And yes, about 150-200 ml actually spilled out of the line. gasoline.

10. I came home with my father and started taking it apart again. The sump was removed and there was a bit of dirt again. The mesh is still clean after 2 days. The original flask and the Chinese flask are one to one.

11. I read how the pump is disassembled, but it’s one thing to read and another to disassemble it yourself. The fuel pump itself is simply carefully pulled out of the flask, with a slight force; a plug with a black and red wire is inserted into it; whoever removes it, do not pull it sharply!

12. After removing the pump, you need to unclip the 2 hooks that hold the rest of the structure. Well, you also need to remove the fuel sensor itself, it is on a latch, after it is released, it simply slides forward.

Comparison of cones

13. The tube that was put on was simply cut off. I didn’t really want to boil the hose in water, so I borrowed a hairdryer from a neighbor. We started heating the pipe. We set it to 200 degrees. I will say one thing: the material is specific. You warm it up and the tip begins to curl. Well, no problem, we handed it out a little with a pencil and started putting it back in place. We screwed it up a little, and when we installed the pump, it was me or it, or something else, but the sound seemed to be sucking air somewhere. Although this may be how the pump works now, the filter is clean. Although, if there was an air leak, it would affect the car.

14. We assemble the structure and do everything in reverse order. But when we put the pump back in, we try not to press those same 2 wires. While pushing the pump, we slowly pull these 2 wires out, because there is no room for them there, and that’s it, the pump is assembled.

15. We put it in the car. Since we bent the new tube slightly wrong, the tube prevented us from installing the pump properly, the tube rested against the wall of the gas tank, with grief in half, but we installed it. I started it up 2 times, but all the gasoline poured out. Let's go, make a couple of sharp turns to make sure that gasoline doesn't splash out of the neck, you never know... What can I say, it started working a little louder, but that's how I looked at it, everyone notices it.

When the seats were installed, it was almost inaudible, but I will still glue it with noise, or rather with another layer. It's 23.20, we just installed it and went to test it. By 3 times it started to pull as before, and in general the acceleration became much better. Let's travel and see what happens next. In a couple of days, I want to cut open the old cleaning filter and see what's inside it.

Where is the Ford Focus 2 fuel filter: photo and video

Car : Ford Focus. Asks : Shamkhan Gadiev. Question : I want to replace the fuel filter, where is it located?

Dips appeared during sharp acceleration on the Ford Focus 2. I have a pre-restayl. They advised to start by replacing the spark plugs, wires, and fuel filter. I have already changed the spark plugs and wires. The fuel filter remains. Tell me where it is. And the article.

Fuel filter for Ford Focus 2

Manufacturers do everything to simplify the operation of the car. But they do not take into account the domestic conditions of its operation. This also applies to the fuel filter on the second generation Ford Focus.

The following two tabs change content below.

I'm just sick of cars. I try to study in detail every car I have owned. I enjoy driving at night on city streets. I try to do my own repairs on my cars!

It is located in the tank in the same module with a level sensor and a fuel pump, and therefore certain problems may arise when replacing it.

Problems due to the fuel filter

On the left is a dirty fuel filter. It is because of this that engine power can drop.

Many of its owners did not even know about the existence of a fuel filter on this car until problems began to occur with the car, namely:

  1. Dips during acceleration.
  2. Unstable engine operation during warm-up.
  3. Complicated engine starting.
  4. Dips at medium speeds.

There could also be other signs that indicate a lean mixture.

Replacing the fuel filter on a first-generation Focus took its owner half an hour. The problem with the second Focus began to arise among those who experienced the difficulties described above when operating the car. Also, it never occurred to some owners that such problems could arise with the fuel filter, since few people knew if it was on the Ford Focus 2 at all.

Fuel filter location

For a car with an injector to work well, it will require two types of fuel filters:

  1. Rough cleaning.
  2. Fine cleaning.

All of them are installed on Focus 2 in the tank in one unit with a fuel pump and a fuel level sensor.

Filter resource

Here is a filter at 50,000 km. And the resource from the manufacturer is 150,000 km. That's how gasoline is!

The manufacturer decided that the filter should last for 150,000 kilometers, after which the filter itself should fail. This is his resource.

After this, it was planned that the block in the tank would be completely changed at a specialized maintenance station, and therefore all its elements were installed in one place so that the replacement could be done faster. But due to low-quality fuel, the system, which was designed for Europe, failed. Due to low-quality fuel at domestic gas stations, the filter often becomes clogged, and therefore it also has to be changed more often.

Modification of the fuel system for Ford Focus 2

Some owners of the second generation Focus decide to improve the fuel system on it and install additional cleaning filters between the tank and injectors.

But this negatively affects the operation of the fuel system, since it is not always possible to additionally clean fuel that has already gone through two stages of cleaning. There is also a large load on the pump pumping fuel.

Replacement methods

Therefore, there are only two options left:

  1. Replace the entire unit at an authorized dealer.
  2. Disassemble and clean the unit yourself.

Which path to choose is something everyone must decide for themselves. Of course, the first option will be expensive. Here you need to take into account both the cost of the work itself and the cost of filters (code B33063PR). But the fuel pump may also need to be replaced.

Disassembling a non-collapsible block

Let's figure it out little by little. But the manufacturer says that it is not collapsible!

The second option will be cheaper. Despite the fact that the manufacturer made the unit non-separable, domestic craftsmen found a way to disassemble it and change the mesh on the filters. No one will use this method at official stations, but the fact remains a fact. There is an opportunity.

We climb to the fuel filter.

If you also have experience or certain skills, then you can do this work yourself.

Replacing the fuel filter

Old and new filter.

Those who decide to do this work themselves should prepare for the fact that the biggest problems will arise with dismantling the tank.

The work itself of replacing filters, if you have certain skills, will not take much time. You can, of course, change the filter without removing the tank, but not everyone will want to carry out such work from inside the car. Therefore, it is recommended to remove the tank.

Process

  1. Reduce the pressure in the system. To do this, remove fuse F11 and start the engine. At idle, it will exhaust all the fuel from the system. After stopping the engine, it must be cranked for some time using the starter. After this, the pressure in the system will be released. Then you should disconnect the terminals on the battery and begin dismantling the module.
  2. Raise the back seat.
  3. Find the cover on it under which the fuel pump is located.

    The location of the fuel pump is marked with an arrow.

  4. Remove the fuel pump.

    Fuel pump power supply.

  5. Remove the module so as not to damage the fuel level sensor.

    Carefully remove the fuel pump.

  6. Disable the sensor. There are special latches there.
  7. Remove the fuel pump and turn it off too.
  8. Remove the cleaning mesh from the pump and replace it with a new one; you also need to rinse the mesh in the coarse filter. The fuel pump itself needs to be washed.

At this point the work can be considered completed. Assembly is carried out in reverse order. If everything was done correctly, the module can still serve for 1–1.5 years or 50–60 thousand kilometers.

What about diesel?

On a second-generation diesel Focus, replacing the fuel filter should not cause any problems.

The main thing here is not to buy a fake. The original fuel filter has article number 1352-443 . You can also put an analogue of Bosch F026 402 007 . Replacement is carried out according to the usual scheme.

Fuel filter for Ford Focus 2 - not an easy replacement + Video » AutoNovator

The condition of your car’s filters determines its proper operation and service life. In the Ford Focus 2, in addition to the oil and air filters, there are also two fuel filters, which are responsible for cleaning the fuel from various impurities and dirt that have entered the tank.

It's time to change - how to determine when to replace the filter?

The Ford car manufacturer recommends replacing the filter once every 30–40 thousand km. True, such mileage is calculated taking into account exceptionally good fuel. Therefore, in practice, most drivers replace it once every 20,000 km. In addition, you need to do timely diagnostics and cleaning of the entire fuel system of the car.

The main fuel filter in Ford Focus 2 is located in the car's tank. The long-term operation of the gasoline pump directly depends on the quality of the work of this part. An additional filter serves to further clean the fuel before entering the injector. It is located under the hood of the car, in an easily accessible place for its replacement.

Replacing the fuel filter in a Ford Focus 2 car should be done as soon as you feel some changes in the operation of the car:

  • while driving, the car loses its power;
  • fuel consumption has increased noticeably;
  • the car stalls when idling;
  • Ford has trouble starting.

If you are convinced that all other elements of the car are functioning correctly during this operation, then the only obvious cause of the problem will be a clogged fuel filter.

Difficulties of replacement - what tricks should you be prepared for?

The main fuel filter system in the Ford Focus 2 is designed in such a way that replacing it is quite problematic. This car model does not provide for replacing the filter through the hatch under the rear seat, as in other car models of domestic and foreign production. Therefore, many drivers prefer to replace the filter at a specialized car service center.

However, despite the difficulties, you can replace this part with your own hands if necessary. To replace or repair the fuel pump and filter, the entire tank must be removed. Before replacing the fuel filter, you must first relieve the pressure in the fuel pipe system. To do this, you need to remove the fuse responsible for the operation of the pump from the car’s mounting block.

In Ford Focus 2, this is usually the 10th or 12th number, it all depends on the configuration of the car. After removing the fuse, start the car and wait until it stalls on its own. By this action we turn off the pump, and the fuel that is in the tubes is completely consumed. There will be no inconvenience when dismantling the tank. It is best to replace the fuel filter when there is a small amount of gasoline in the tank.

If the fuel level in the tank is more than half full, this will make the job very difficult. You may lose some of the fuel during further work.

To remove the tank and further replace the filter, you must go to the inspection hole or perform this work on a lift. Before performing work, prepare a standard set of tools, as well as a new filter. It is worth noting that the filter for the second Ford Focus is not always available in the auto store. Therefore, you can replace it with a filter from a Toyota car - they are almost the same in size.

First of all, we need to unscrew the fastenings of the exhaust pipe and move it to the side so that it does not interfere with us in the future. After this, unscrew the fuel pipes, as well as the fuel supply hose from the tank cap. Carefully disconnect the power supply, the wires from which go to the tank to operate the pump. After this, unscrew the fasteners and remove the tank. It consists of two parts, so unscrew the bolts along its contour, then remove the upper part.

Now you can start replacing the filter, which is located in a plastic flask along with the pump. Be especially careful with the wires that go to the pump, as well as with the float sensor, which indicates the correct fuel level in the tank. After replacing the filter, install everything in reverse order. First, the tank body at the junction must be treated with a sealant and, if necessary, its gasket must be replaced to prevent gasoline leakage in the future.

Putting the tank back is much more difficult. To install it, prepare a jack or telescopic stand, depending on whether you are working on a viewing hole or on a lift. Without the help of these tools, it will be very difficult to position the tank correctly. After the tank is exposed, if possible, fill the tank to half its level and see if there are any gasoline stains on the joints. If any are found, tighten the connecting bolts.

Additional filter - replacement according to all the rules

It is also recommended to replace the fuel filter, which is located under the hood; fortunately, replacing it is not difficult. To do this you will need several standard wrenches and half an hour of time. This part is much more common in all auto shops.

After removing the part, it is recommended to replace the rubber gaskets that are located in the nuts at the joints. Gaskets are usually included with the spare part; less often you have to buy them separately. When installing the filter, you need to tighten the nuts quite firmly, but do not overdo it so as not to strip the threads. Let the car run for a while with the new device and check if there is any gasoline leaking out at the connections to the filter. If there are any, tighten the nuts a little more.

After completing all the filter replacement work, you can check the operation of the car. To do this, turn the key in the ignition several times, but do not start the car. This technique is necessary so that the fuel pump pumps up the required pressure in the pipes, which we released before replacing the part. After that, start the car and enjoy its pleasant operation. For better effect and performance of the car, clean the engine throttle body.

Replacing the Ford Focus 2 fuel filter on a gasoline engine

The FTO on a gasoline engine is located next to the gas tank; it can be changed quite easily. To replace the filter, you need to crawl under the car, so it is convenient to carry out the replacement on a lift or pit. Replacement is carried out in the following order:

  • We remove the fuse responsible for the operation of the fuel pump from the mounting block;
  • we start the engine and wait for it to stall (the gasoline in the fuel system must run out). Thus, we relieve pressure in the fuel system;
  • unscrew the bolt securing the filter to the body;
  • We disconnect the fuel hoses from the filter element; to do this, you need to move the clips at the connections with your fingers and pull the hose from the FTO. Before disconnecting the fuel lines, we prepare a small container for gasoline; about a glass of it will drain from the filter;
  • dismantle the filter, disconnect it from the mounting plate (you don’t have to completely unscrew the bolt, just loosen it well);
  • We fix the new TF on the mounting plate, pay attention to the arrow that is on the filter housing; during installation, it must look in the direction from the gas tank to the engine;
  • We install the part in its place, connect the hoses, and do not forget to put a fuse in the mounting block.

Let's get started

First you need to find where the burnt out pump is located. It is located in the fuel tank. Usually there is a hole for it under the rear sofa. So, we remove the second row of seats and find the metal panel hiding the pump. The problem with “tricks” is that they do not have a technological hole for it. And to replace an element, you need to extend it manually. Using special scissors, carefully cut a hole with a diameter of 25 cm and bend the metal to the side.

Now you see a pump in front of you. So, how is the fuel pump replaced on a 2nd generation Ford Focus?

Remove the tubes from the fuel lines. Please note that they will be filled with gasoline, so they may stain everything around them. Stock up on a large piece of rags in advance. You can do it simpler - start the engine and remove the fuse from the pump. After a few seconds the engine will stall. This way we will not only free the lines from gasoline, but also equalize the excess pressure in the system.

Next, we dismantle the O-ring that holds the pump itself. Using a screwdriver, unscrew the necessary screws and remove the element out. Externally it will look like the one shown in the photo below.

Remember that the design also includes an anti-drip glass (so that gasoline does not run out on climbs and turns), a pair of wires that go to the 12V network and a grid. The latter is also recommended to be inspected.

Ford Focus 2 fuel filter replacement, video

The engine power system must maintain reliable and uninterrupted operation of the engine. Its dynamic and economic indicators depend on this. This is directly influenced by the fuel filter, which cleans gasoline from impurities and foreign particles. Today you will learn about this device on a Ford Focus 2 car, as well as how to replace the fuel filter. For clarity, there is a video at the end of the article!

What is a fuel filter on a Ford Focus?

A filter is a part that is needed to clean something from foreign particles . Fuel filters used on cars are no exception. They are equipped with elements of two categories - coarse and fine. Today we will talk specifically about the fine filter, which is installed directly in the gas tank of the car.

These Ford Focus cleaning systems use paper that is not too thick, which perfectly allows liquids to pass through, but retains solid particles. In injection systems, only the cleanest fuel should be used, so special requirements are placed on the filter element here.

If the filter is installed on the pump, then it does not have a protective shell, but in other cases it can only be used in sealed jars with special fittings.

If the element becomes clogged or fails, the fuel begins to pass through with difficulty or drags small particles along with it. This significantly affects the dynamics of the car and increases fuel consumption. In this regard, the fuel filter must be replaced periodically.

When is replacement needed in a Ford Focus?

Ford requires mandatory replacement of the filter element on Focuses every 40 thousand kilometers. These figures are calculated taking into account the fact that the car will be filled with high-quality fuel, so it is still recommended to do this procedure every 20 thousand.

Since the Ford Focus filter is installed in a gasoline tank, the condition of the pump will depend on its operation. The second filter of this car is mounted in the engine compartment and protects the injector directly from impurities.

In addition, replacement is carried out when the following engine malfunctions are detected.

  1. The car does not develop full power . This is evidenced by deteriorated dynamics and a reduced maximum speed.
  2. Fuel consumption has become too high.
  3. The engine may not idle well. In exceptional cases, it is problematic to launch it.

If you find all of the above, then your car definitely needs a fuel filter replacement.

Features of replacing a filter on a Ford Focus

Before you begin repair work, it is worth knowing that when designing the car, engineers did not take into account a special hatch for replacing the filter, as, for example, on many other cars of domestic and foreign production. In this regard, certain difficulties arise that drivers prefer to transfer to a service station.

Before performing work, you need to reduce the pressure in the fuel system. This is very easy to do, you just need to pull out the fuse that connects the fuel pump to the network. Depending on the configuration, this fuse may be numbered 10 or 12. This should be indicated in the vehicle's technical operating instructions.

For convenience, make sure in advance that there is as little fuel in the tank as possible. The best option is when the level is no more than 5 liters. After this, the tank can be safely removed, having first disconnected all the tubes and hoses from it. Large amounts of fuel will cause you to spill some. It is recommended to carry out all this work on a lift, overpass or inspection pit.

Once the tank is removed, you can begin replacing. Purchase a new fuel filter in advance . If it is not available in your city or there are certain difficulties in finding it, then you can supply an element from Toyota cars. Their dimensions and mounting methods are almost identical.

Before removing the fuel tank, do not forget to unscrew the exhaust system fasteners and move it slightly to the side. This way you will free up space. The filter element is located in a plastic flask and is located in front of the pump. Changing it is not difficult, you just need to be careful with the wires that connect the electric motor.

After replacement, reassemble the elements in the reverse order. To position the tank correctly, it is best to use a jack or a special stand. Otherwise the work will take much longer.

Changing the fuel filter under the hood is much easier; for this you need to have a standard set of tools. After replacement, do not tighten the nuts too much, otherwise there is a risk of damaging the threads.

Upon completion of work, start the engine and let it idle for a while . Now make sure that there are no fuel leaks and the job can be considered complete. As you can see, it wasn't difficult at all.

When to change?

According to the recommendations of the Ford Focus 2 manufacturer, the next replacement of the fuel filter should be done at least once every 30,000–40,000 km. It should be clarified that these figures are not entirely applicable when operating a car in domestic conditions. So, the developers calculated this mileage taking into account the high quality and decent purification of the gasoline sold. So in Russian reality, such a replacement should be carried out at least once every 20,000 km. In addition, it is strongly recommended that you systematically monitor the condition and, if necessary, do not delay cleaning the entire fuel system of your Ford Focus 2.

Maintenance of Ford Focus 2: regulations, features

Fuel in the FordFocus 2 system is cleaned by two filters. The location of one of them is the fuel tank. The serviceability and durability of the fuel pump depends on the efficiency of its operation. The second performs the function of additional fuel purification before it enters the injector. It is located in an accessible place - under the hood, where it is easy to replace.

Experts advise changing the fuel filter on your Ford Focus 2 at the first signs of incorrect behavior of the car. What should the driver be alert to:

  • loss of power when driving;
  • fuel consumption has increased significantly;
  • the engine stalls when idling;
  • The car started to have trouble starting.

If the listed symptoms are detected, you need to make sure that all other elements and systems of your Ford Focus 2 are working correctly. If so, then with a high probability we can assume that the cause of the problem is a clogged fuel filter.
