Replacing the timing belt for Zeteс 1.8 liter engine. Ford focus

The Ford Focus 2 gas distribution mechanism uses a belt or chain, depending on the model of the power plant. In the case of a belt drive, it is recommended to replace the consumables every 120-160 thousand km.

When operating a vehicle in difficult conditions, the timing belt maintenance interval should be shortened.

Recommendations for replacing the timing belt

According to official recommendations, replacing the timing belt is required every 120-160 thousand km. This frequency is conditional. In domestic conditions, maintenance may be needed after 70-90 thousand km. You can determine when to change the timing belt by its appearance. To visually inspect the consumable, it is necessary to unscrew the fastenings of the upper protective casing and, bending it, check the condition. To fully inspect the belt, rotate it by rotating the crankshaft.

To replace the timing belt, a special tool is required. To avoid purchasing it, you can make clamps and other elements with your own hands.

Replacing the timing belt for Zeteс 1.8 liter engine. Ford focus

How to properly replace the timing belt on a Ford Focus? The timing belt is responsible for the smooth operation of the car in general and in particular for the gas distribution system. This engine part is present in vehicles of any type and purpose. Thanks to its toothed surface, the belt can transmit rotation from one element to another. With this, fuel enters the combustion chambers and combustion products exit. Timely replacement of this mechanism contributes to the uninterrupted and high-quality operation of the engine and the car as a whole. Replacing this mechanism is a labor-intensive process and requires some knowledge in the automotive world. Basically, this procedure is trusted to be carried out only by drivers with extensive experience and experience, or at car service stations. But many drivers do not have enough money or time and have to make the shift themselves. Replacing this important part on a Ford Focus car with a 1.8-liter engine called Zetec is carried out using special tool kits. Using these devices, you will have to install the engine camshaft, as well as quickly and correctly fix the camshafts and gears in the engine. In addition, you will also need a wrench with a built-in dynamometer, 2 lifts and a set of spanner wrenches. The first thing you need to do is: unscrew the right-hand wheel, after which the belt drive casing is removed, then separate the high-voltage cables from the spark plugs and unhook the barrel of the expander and hydraulic power steering. The next step is to remove the valve covers and unscrew the special plug on the engine so that the crankshaft can be fixed. Now you need to unscrew the pump pulley and remove the drive belt. We place a lift under the pallet and remove the motor support cushion. Subsequently, you can remove the upper part of the belt cover, then the roller, and the central part of the cover can also be easily removed. We install the crankshaft pulley according to the indicated mark, taking into account that the second mark must completely coincide with the “Tide” on the engine block. The main thing is that the installation bar fits into the connectors of the crankshaft and, if necessary, we make adjustments using the crankshaft. We insert the lock into the engine block and begin to unscrew and remove the crankshaft pulley and the lower belt cover. We loosen the belt tension roller and remove the timing belt itself. Then, using a locking device, holding the intake camshaft pulley, unscrew the pulley bolt and remove the tension roller. At this point, the disassembly process can be considered complete and we can proceed to installing a new belt and roller. When the new belt is installed, we tension it, taking into account the coincidence of the arrow with the marks. Using a wrench with a built-in dynamometer, tighten the tension roller bolt to 25 Nm. The crankshaft fixing device in the engine block and the fixing bar are removed, and the camshaft gears must be tightened to 68 Nm. We put the lower, middle and upper parts of the timing belt cover back into place. A pulley for the drive belt must be installed on the middle cover. The crankshaft pulley itself must be clamped with a force of 115 Nm and then the pump pulley and drive belt must be installed. We put the engine mount, expansion tank and power steering in place. We screw the wheel back on and start the engine, starting to check the operation of the engine in the car.

Timing belt Ford Focus 2

The frequency of replacing the timing belt on a Ford Focus 2 car, established by the manufacturer, is every 120 thousand kilometers; this regulation is written in the service book of the car. But in Russian conditions, it is recommended to change timing parts at a mileage of 60-80 thousand km - operating conditions in Russia are more severe, and the engine is subjected to increased loads.

It is recommended to replace the parts of the Ford Focus 2 gas distribution mechanism as a set, that is, the belt along with the tension roller. The price of a kit in a car store can vary significantly; it largely depends on the manufacturer of the parts. The most expensive and high-quality parts are original spare parts, but there are companies that produce products that are not inferior in quality to the original.

Among the most famous companies producing timing parts, it should be noted:

  • Dayco;
  • Gates;

If the mileage of the engine is quite high, and the camshaft seals and the front crankshaft seal have not been changed, they should also be updated, since if they leak, extensive work will have to be done again. Along with the timing parts, the drive belts should be changed at the same time, since their service life is approximately the same as that of the timing belt.

Installing drive belts

A special tool should be included with new alternator (RG) and air conditioner belts.

The air conditioner belt is shorter than the generator belt and is installed from below. The belt drive is installed as follows:

  • we put the generator belt on the crankshaft pulley, the generator and the power steering pump;

  • We attach a special tool (special device) to the pump pulley;
  • we pass the belt through the device;

  • Wet the pump pulley with WD40, grab the device and turn it to the right, clockwise. At the moment of turning, we correct the RG so that it falls into place;

  • The WG goes under the water pump pulley, after which you need to remove the device;
  • for correct final installation of the generator belt, use a 24mm socket and a crank to turn the generator by the nut in the direction of rotation of the shaft;

The air conditioning belt (AC) is put on from below - first it is attached to the compressor pulley, the next step is to install another device from the kit on the crankshaft pulley.

Pressing the CV against the pulley, rotate the crankshaft clockwise. While turning the shaft, we adjust the belt by hand, and the steering wheel is installed in its place.
