UAZ Patriot, fuel consumption per 100 km is quite moderate

Engine UAZ Patriot ZMZ gasoline 2.7 liter capacity produces 128 hp. with a torque of 210 Nm. The second engine with which the UAZ Patriot is sold today is a 2.2-liter diesel engine with a power of 114 hp. at 270 Nm of torque. Diesel is also assembled at ZMZ (Zavolzhsky Motor Plant). Today we’ll talk in more detail about these power units for the domestic SUV. Patriot gasoline engine, this is the ZMZ 409, which became the heir to the well-known 406 engine. In-line 4-cylinder 16-valve power unit with an aluminum block and aluminum cylinder head. The engine has two overhead camshafts, which move the valves using hydraulic compensators. That is, there is no need to manually adjust the valves on this engine. Injection injection allows the engine to comply with the Euro 4 environmental standard. The timing drive has a chain. It would seem that nothing could be more reliable, but it is the chain that is the weakest point of the motor. Constant complaints from owners about chain breaks forced the manufacturer to abandon the use of Chinese hydraulic chain tensioners, replacing them with German ones. Below are more detailed technical characteristics of this engine.

UAZ Patriot 2.7 ZMZ 409 (128 hp) characteristics, fuel consumption

  • Working volume – 2693 cm3

  • Ecological class – Euro-4
  • Maximum speed – 150 km/h
  • Acceleration to 100 km/h - slow
  • Fuel consumption in the city – 15-17 liters
  • Fuel consumption in the combined cycle – 13-14 liters
  • Fuel consumption on the highway – 11.5 liters

The fuel consumption of a gasoline Patriot is a separate issue, since in off-road conditions with all-wheel drive engaged and the air conditioning running, consumption can reach 25-30 liters per hundred. Therefore, it is not possible to accurately determine the actual consumption, due to the huge number of related factors affecting the Patriot’s gasoline consumption.

The UAZ Patriot ZMZ-51432 diesel engine , which is currently installed on domestic SUVs, was recently mastered. Previously, an IVECO unit with a volume of 2.3 liters was installed under the hood of the Patriot. The domestic engine produces approximately the same characteristics. Power 114 hp with a torque of 270 Nm. The in-line 4-cylinder 16-valve Common Rail turbodiesel with “BOSCH” injection has an aluminum block and cylinder head. The timing drive is also chain driven. The diesel version is significantly more expensive than the gasoline version, so it is offered only in the most expensive trim levels. Diesel Patriots are not very popular despite significant fuel economy and increased torque. Below are detailed characteristics of the turbodiesel power unit.

Why so many?

First, let's understand the concepts a lot and normally. The plant indicates in the characteristics that the average fuel consumption is 10-12.5 liters per 100 km

. In practice, it turns out that the Patriot consumes about 15 liters every hundred. This is normal.

For some owners this figure is 20 liters. And there are individuals whose Patriots eat as much as 25-30 liters. This is already a lot. And the reasons for such disgrace may be:

Features of the car design

This is a typical situation faced by those who got behind the wheel of a UAZ Patriot for the first time. And now we will describe it.

A person buys a brand new Patriot and takes it, just in case, to a mechanic he knows so that he can make a diagnosis. The check did not reveal any problems.

A person gets behind the wheel and drives for kilometers, satisfied with the purchase. But all his satisfaction disappears when he discovers that he has traveled a little more than 100 kilometers, and the fuel is 20 or 30 liters less. And he is sure of this because the fuel level sensor and the on-board computer show approximately the same numbers.

In fact, there is no difference, taking into account the fact that this is a completely serviceable car.

The fact is that the Patriot has two tanks - the main and additional ones. To fill both tanks completely, you need to spend a long time - fill the main tank, wait until its contents transfer to the additional one. Then fill the main tank again and wait until the fuel flows. In general, it will take you 15-20 minutes to complete this.

But it’s rare that anyone can withstand a 15-20 minute refueling. Therefore, they fill the main tank to the top, and do not wait for the fuel to flow into the additional tank in order to add more. But let’s not forget that it still flows.

When you start driving, the jet pump automatically pumps fuel from the auxiliary tank to the main tank until it is full to the top. And it holds about 5 liters.

That is, you will drive a little, and the indicator will show you that 5 liters have already been used up from the additional tank. But as soon as you stop and wait about 10 minutes, you will be surprised, because the fuel level will again be normal, since fuel will again flow from the main tank into the additional tank. attentive.

But why then does the on-board computer show such a loss? Let us immediately note that not for everyone, but only for gasoline Patriots. Because there is a “Prestige U12” computer installed there, which is not calibrated.

Therefore, it calculates fuel consumption not by fact, but by the time the injectors open. But different types of injectors used on UAZ cars have different throughput capacities. In a word, do a calibration. Then everything will fall into place, and you will make sure for yourself that your consumption is normal.

Driving conditions

Look, you can drive the same car for 20 km and spend less fuel than driving 7 km. How is this? It’s very simple: we drive 20 km without stopping, and we drive 7 km in a traffic jam. So, if the main traffic is in a traffic jam, you shouldn’t be surprised why the UAZ Patriot has such a high fuel consumption.

Cold weather also has a strong impact on consumption (this does not apply to diesel Patriots), because we spend a lot of gasoline while warming up the engine.

So, we've sorted out the waste. But this doesn’t make it any easier, because the car still consumes a large amount of fuel compared to other SUVs. We bet that the recommendations below can definitely help you.

Comfort

The updated UAZ Patriot received a new instrument panel, the main element of which is a new steering wheel. It is now adjustable not only for the angle of inclination, but also for the reach. For convenience, comfort and greater safety while driving, new functions are controlled on the steering wheel. The updated UAZ Patriot now has cruise control and a speed limiter, which are controlled by a block of buttons on the left side of the steering wheel. On the right side there are controls for the multimedia system and the hands-free system for safe communication on the phone while driving.

The updated UAZ Patriot is equipped with new paddle switches of a modern design with expanded functionality, which include a three-time lane change signal, on-board computer control and windshield wiper pause adjustment. The update also affected the light control module, in which the algorithm for turning on fog lights and tail lights has become more convenient.

To radically increase acoustic comfort on the updated UAZ Patriot, measures were taken to improve noise insulation and vibration insulation. The following materials have been added and improved:

  • Sound insulation and vibration insulation for the front panel
  • Sound insulating upholstery for floor and luggage compartment
  • Vibration insulation of roof and side doors
  • Second circuit of door seals

A major modernization on the updated UAZ Patriot affected the fuel system. Now the UAZ Patriot is equipped with a single plastic fuel tank with a plastic filler neck.

UAZ "Patriot" - diesel or gasoline, speed or traction?

According to RuNet, the UAZ Patriot SUV was recognized as the best domestic car of 2012. Moreover, both the gasoline and diesel versions of the Patriot were among the leaders.

The appearance of a diesel version of the UAZ Patriot aroused great interest. Consequently, a debate broke out between petrol engine fans and diesel fans. What to choose? Diesel or gasoline? This is, of course, a personal matter for each owner. The gasoline engine is quieter and has higher revs. However, diesel is more economical and develops truly locomotive traction at the bottom. But the design of a diesel engine is more bulky and heavy compared to a gasoline engine, and the speed is much lower.

In principle, the engine’s ability to develop high speeds only pleases the owner’s vanity. In fact, a power unit is judged by its power and its ability to pull a car. And if you consider that the Patriot is not a city SUV, and you can drive it even in the absence of roads, then powerful traction in low gears is preferable for it than high revs. And this depends little on what is under the hood: gasoline or diesel. This depends on the correct selection of transmission gear ratios in relation to the engine.

In terms of fuel consumption, it is also difficult to say which is better: UAZ “Patriot” diesel or gasoline. Yes, diesel consumes less fuel. But is the overall money saving really that significant? A Patriot with a diesel engine requires an average of 10 liters per 100 km in city driving mode. Petrol version - 13 liters. It would seem that the savings are obvious. But, in addition to gasoline or diesel fuel, the engine also needs related components. And then it turns out that the oil in a diesel engine needs to be changed twice as often. And buying good oil also costs a decent amount. So in this regard, there are no special differences in what configuration the UAZ “Patriot” is purchased in - diesel or gasoline.

Let's analyze further. Now let's look at the cost of spare parts. The diesel version of the Patriot has an Iveco engine. The unit itself is not bad, but spare parts for it are very expensive. This is especially true for high-precision components of the electronic injection system. For example, the cost of a common rail injector on an Iveco can reach up to 22 thousand rubles. And they “live” for a maximum of 300,000 km. The cost of the injection pump is also impressive - about 46,000 rubles. In this case, the “diesel or gasoline” scale is clearly not tilted in favor of diesel.

So, which version should you prefer? If diesel cars were unprofitable, they would not be produced. This fully applies to UAZs. The choice of diesel or gasoline will depend more on where the car is intended to be used. If a brutal SUV is chosen for self-affirmation and for moving around the city, then the diesel version is more prestigious. If a frame all-terrain vehicle is chosen for adventure, then in this case gasoline is preferable. There will obviously be no savings on fuel, but on spare parts it will be noticeable.

To buy or not to buy? Diesel or gasoline? Perhaps no expert will give a definite answer. When choosing an SUV, everyone is guided not only by technical parameters, advice from specialists and “experts,” but also by their own preferences.

UAZ Patriot 409 Euro-4 engine

The first ZMZ-40905 engine in the Volga region was assembled at the end of 2011; many of its parts were unified with the 40904.10 engine, but 27 new elements were also used. The changes mainly affected the ECM, the gas distribution mechanism, and the ventilation system.

Due to the improvements made to the UAZ Patriot 409, the Euro-4 engine has reduced the level of exhaust gas toxicity, fuel consumption has decreased slightly, and the internal combustion engine has become quieter. ZMZ began serial production of model 40905.10 at the beginning of 2012, the power unit is still being produced.

Dimensions and weight

Since the UAZ Patriot is available in three main trim levels, the following parameters exist for it:

"Classic"

Length – 4750

Wheelbase – 2760

Width – 1900

Height – 1910

With such dimensions, this SUV very accurately falls into the mid-size category.

"Comfort" and "Limited"

Length - 4785

Wheelbase - 2760

Width - 1900

Height – 2005

UAZ Patriot has a good wheel track, which is 1600 for the standard configuration and 1610 for the Limited type options.

If we talk about weight, it differs noticeably, depending on the installed engine . If it is gasoline, then such an SUV will weigh 2125 kg; in the case of a diesel one, this figure increases by approximately 40 kilograms. At the same time, you can easily load the Patriot with cargo whose weight does not exceed 525 kg. Despite the documentary data, there is a lot of practical evidence where the UAZ was able to easily handle a load of 600 kg.

If we talk about ground clearance, then almost any configuration has 210 millimeters. In addition, the SUV can safely pass through any water ford, the depth of which does not exceed 0.5 meters. The angular size of the frame is 35 degrees, which is very reassuring for those who are afraid to sit on their belly.

Selecting the best options

One of the solutions to reduce the cost of operation is to refuse to use a gasoline mixture and install gas-cylinder equipment. Such tuning actually saves SUV owners' refueling costs by up to 20%, although it has its negative aspects. Engine power is lost, but low-end performance increases. Finding a large gas cylinder inside a car is also an ambiguous issue. For an SUV that weighs more than 2.5 tons fully loaded, this option is unacceptable for many.

One of the ways to solve the issue of how to reduce fuel consumption on a UAZ Patriot with a 409 injector engine is to maintain all vehicle systems in good condition. It will also not be superfluous:

  • choose the right speed limit;
  • Constantly monitor tire pressure;
  • do not drive aggressively;
  • limit the use of air conditioning.

In practice, tracking real fuel (gasoline) consumption on a UAZ Patriot is problematic. Especially in the version released before October 2016, in which a reserve tank was structurally provided along with the main tank, it is quite difficult. The fuel gauge readings may first decrease and then increase sharply. This is explained by the fact that while driving, gasoline flows from one tank to another, especially when driving over rough terrain.

This problem was eliminated in the new modification of the UAZ Patriot, which has a single plastic fuel tank. In this case, you can count on real readings of the amount of gasoline remaining.

It is not always possible to fill the tank to capacity, nor is it always possible to empty it completely. The on-board computer shows average values because it is not initially calibrated. It calculates the current fuel consumption while driving, based on the opening time of the injectors. That is why, when driving at a speed of 90 km/h and 120 km/h, the on-board computer shows the same consumption.

The fuel consumption of UAZ Patriot 2020 per 100 km can be reduced in several ways:

  • use of high-quality fuel. If AI-92 was previously filled, then switching to AI-95 will not solve the problem in the direction of reducing consumption. In both cases, only high-quality gasoline should be poured;
  • driving in higher gears. However, you should constantly monitor the tachometer speed - they should not fall below 1500 thousand;
  • ECU flashing. The procedure can be carried out for both gasoline and diesel engines; the latter respond better to changes.

Owners of UAZ Patriot turn to service center specialists for electronic correction of the ECU in order to increase power and improve the dynamic characteristics of the car. With a professional approach, you can indeed achieve encouraging results. However, you should not expect that in addition to these indicators, consumption will also decrease. Since on the UAZ Patriot it is almost impossible to reduce fuel consumption per 100 km of gasoline and at the same time increase power.

In order to find out exactly what fuel consumption a UAZ Patriot has, you can use the old-fashioned method - “roll out” the fuel to zero, then fill in the exact amount and roll it out to zero again. Only in this case can the exact fuel consumption be determined as accurately as possible.

Heating and climate control

The UAZ Patriot is seriously prepared for the cold season, offering not only heated front seats, rear windows and side mirrors, but also a pre-heater with programming capabilities, heating of the entire area of the windshield and heated rear seats, which is a competitive advantage in the SUV segment. With the update of the UAZ Patriot, a heated steering wheel with leather trim is added to this list.

As part of the update, the heating, ventilation and air conditioning control system was completely redesigned. And now the UAZ Patriot has such a feature as single-zone climate control with a new control unit on the center console and the ability to select the desired temperature. For second-row passengers, a second cabin heater with a separate fan and adjustable air deflectors is installed.

New engine UAZ Patriot 2020

In 2020, the factory workers are going to bring all power units of the UAZ Patriot into compliance with Euro-5 standards, but for now, in the first half of 2020, two types of power units are standardly installed on the SUV:

  • gasoline engine ZMZ-409 (128 hp);
  • turbodiesel ZMZ-51432 (113 hp).

Currently, the Ulyanovsk plant is developing an updated version of the Patriot, which will presumably be called UAZ-3170. For the future model, a new gasoline power unit with an estimated capacity of 140 hp is being developed in the Volga region. With. and a volume of two liters. There is no exact information yet, but it is likely that the new UAZ Patriot 2020 engine will also be equipped with the 3163 model.
