Where is GL-4 gear oil used?

Choosing a lubricant

The smooth functioning of the gearbox, as well as the timing of replacement, largely depend on the quality and characteristics of the engine oil.

In the video from user Mechanic, you can learn more about choosing transmission fluid for a GAZelle car.

When choosing a lubricant for a GAZelle gearbox, you should take into account the following factors:

  1. Recommendations of the machine manufacturer for lubricants, which require certain requirements. It is best to use more expensive and high-quality oils, since by saving money on lubricants, you can spend a lot on repairing the unit.
  2. When choosing a brand of oil, it is necessary to take into account not only the operating conditions of the car (ambient temperature, road surface condition, total mileage), but also the manufacturer of the transmission fluid, as well as its reputation in the automotive market.
  3. You should purchase a “transmission” that is approximately 1 liter more than what is required for replacement. It will be needed later when topping up, and you only need to add the oil that was filled in earlier.

When choosing an oil, a lot depends on the climate in which the car is operated. In areas with low air temperatures, a liquid of lower viscosity is poured for the winter than in the southern regions.

Car service books do not always contain recommendations regarding lubricant. For example, the operating instructions for a car with a UMP engine do not give specific instructions on the choice of oil; only a viscosity that meets the SAE 75W standard is recommended.

The following brands of oil correspond to these indicators:

  • Castrol 75W140;
  • Magnum 75W80;
  • Total 75W80;
  • Manol 75W80.

Cummins gear oil has also proven itself to be good, and is poured even into the boxes of business-class cars.

The presence of mineral additives in lubricants that meet the SAE 75W standard improves their characteristics, including density and viscosity. Such oils harden at a temperature of about -45°C, which allows them to be used in almost all regions of the Russian Federation.

Where is it used?

GL-4 gear oils are designed for gears that operate under different conditions: from light to heavy. This includes bevel and hypoid gears with low axle displacement, drive axles, non-synchronized transmissions of North American trucks, buses and tractors, as well as final drives and other gears of all vehicles. Today, such fluids are used primarily in synchronized transmissions.

GL-4 oil is widespread and can be found in any auto store in Russia. It is available and has a fairly reasonable price. Thanks to its multifunctionality and versatility, the fluid reliably protects transmission elements in almost any conditions. The durable oil film formed by the material on the surfaces reliably protects them from corrosion and wear.

GL-4 fluids are all-season, so they are widely used in central Russia, where average summer and winter temperatures do not exceed the operating temperature range of oils. In the northern and southern regions, preference should be given to seasonal oils.

About level control

The lubrication level of the unit is checked after every 20 thousand km. This must be done even when no visible leaks are detected. If the lubricant level drops for some reason, transmission oil is added to the gearbox housing.

The operating instructions for GAZelle cars do not indicate a specific volume of lubricant to add to the gearbox, since depending on the modification of the car, the amount of oil can be in the range of 1.2-1.6 liters. Therefore, we recommend purchasing liquid in a 2-liter canister; any excess will be useful for refilling.

Before you start checking the fluid level, you need to thoroughly clean the breather, its cover and the nearby surface of the gearbox housing, after which you should turn the plug several times. The amount of lubricant is located at the lower edge of the filler hole, so cleaning it from dirt is extremely necessary.

Let's take a closer look at the process of monitoring the oil level in the gearbox of a GAZelle car:

  1. You only need to check the quantity when the gearbox is warm. To do this, it will be enough to drive 10–15 kilometers.
  2. The machine should be installed on an overpass or inspection hole; even a slight tilt in the horizontal plane is unacceptable.
  3. It is necessary to allow the lubricant to drain from the walls to the bottom of the crankcase. During this time, use a rag to thoroughly wipe the filler hole cover, which is also a control hole.
  4. You need to unscrew the plug and observe the hole. If a thin stream of lubricant flows through it, this is not evidence of a normal oil level. Next, you need to add fluid to the gearbox using a syringe and check again.
  5. Stopping the flow of lubricant after topping up will indicate a normal fluid level in the system.
  6. You can now tighten the plug and continue operating the vehicle.

Important! You only need to add lubricant to the car’s gearbox of the same type that was previously filled.

It is unacceptable to operate the car with a low oil level in the gearbox of the Gazelle Next and other models. Since insufficient volume can cause air pockets, which will affect the amount of lubricating fluid supplied to the gears and bearings of the gearbox.

Replacement instructions

If the required volume of transmission oil for replacement has been prepared and the location for the operation has been selected, then you can change the “transmission” in the box.

Required Tools

To replace you should prepare:

  • container for collecting “working off”;
  • a syringe for pouring new lubricant;
  • cleaning material;
  • new oil to fill.

In some cases, flushing the gearbox housing will be necessary. This will be indicated by the presence of metal shavings on the drain plug magnet. Then you should additionally prepare approximately 1 liter of flushing oil.

In the video from the channel Gazelists of Ukraine you can watch about changing the lubricant in the Gazelle gearbox.

About the order of the operation

We found out how much oil is in a GAZelle box, let's talk about how to replace it. This operation is carried out only on a warmed-up car gearbox, as this allows the “working off” to be completely drained.

Next, the procedure will be as follows:

  1. The machine is installed on an inspection pit or overpass. Stops are placed under the wheels.
  2. Thoroughly clean the drain and filler caps from accumulated dirt.
  3. Unscrew the drain plug, having previously placed a container under the crankcase to collect the “working off”.
  4. Drain the grease; this will take about 20 minutes.
  5. The drain plug is inspected for the presence of metal shavings. If it is noticed, you should flush the gearbox housing.
  6. The cleaned cap is screwed back into place and the filler is unscrewed. Depending on the vehicle configuration, it can be located on either the left or right side of the gearbox.
  7. Add the required amount of lubricant to the open filler hole using a syringe. Continue pouring until oil flows out of the hole.
  8. The plug is wiped and replaced.

If you don’t have a syringe at hand, you can change the oil without it. In this case, new lubricant is poured through the hole for the gear shift lever. Dismantling it will not be difficult. To do this, remove the protection in the form of a cover, and then turn out the lever. The required volume of liquid must be poured into the resulting hole in the crankcase, observing its appearance in the control hole.

How to change gearbox oil in a gazelle car, how much is included and which one to choose?

Hi all. The topic of today's article is oil in the gearbox of a gazelle car, how much to fill, how to change it and what oil to choose?

It so happened that the gazelle received a highly modernized box from a Volga car. It is important to understand that the Volga is a passenger car, and the Gazelle is a truck, which often works with overload and the gearbox is a consumable item. At least somehow extending the life of the box will help to use high-quality oil and adherence to its replacement interval.

How to change the oil in the gearbox of a Gazelle car?

We need a tool:

Hexagon 12 - we will use it to unscrew and tighten the drain plugs

Basin - we will drain used oil into it

Syringe - we will use it to fill in the oil, but if you wish, you can do without it.

Oil change procedure:

  • We drive 10-20 km so that the oil in the box warms up and becomes more liquid.
  • We drive into a pit or lift (or simply crawl under the frame as the height of the body allows)
  • Unscrew the drain plug and substitute the basin
  • We are waiting for the oil to stop draining
  • We wipe the magnet of the drain plug from shavings and wrap it back.
  • We unscrew the filler plug and fill in the oil with a syringe until it runs out of the filler plug.
  • We wipe the threads and tighten the filler plug.

All the oil in the box has been changed and you can drive =)

If you do not have a syringe, you can pour oil into the box through the gear shift lever. To do this, remove the rubber cover and unscrew the lever itself (done by hand without tools, by hand).

Pour the oil directly into the box. Accordingly, fill in the oil until it comes out of the filler plug.

I warn you against filling the oil “according to the norm” (1.2 liters)! The fact is that the castings of the boxes are slightly different and what is normal for one box will not be enough for another! Remember, a low level is bad because the insides of the box will quickly wear out, and a high level is bad because the seals will start to sweat oil! Fill with oil until it comes out of the filler neck!

If you cannot unscrew the filler plug, try the plug on the other side (the exhaust pipe may be in the way). It’s strange, but true, there are 2 filler plugs on the gearboxes of gazelles and Volgas, this is due to the fact that the cars were equipped with different engines in different years and their exhaust pipes were on different sides.

Oil change interval in the gearbox of a gazelle car.

The factory recommends an oil change interval of 50,000 km, but in practice, in a gazelle box it is better to change it twice as often, i.e. every 3 engine oil changes or 30,000 km. Unless genuine synthetic motor oils can be changed less frequently.

The author of this article bought a new gazelle with a 421 engine in 2009 and the gearbox covered only 40,000 km with factory oil, then its first gear began to fall out and it began to hum, a replacement under warranty saved the day.

After that, Mannol GL4 85w-90 was poured into the box, with this oil the box traveled 240,000 km with oil changes every 50,000 km, after which the car was sold and the box was in excellent condition when sold. The problem is that this oil costs more than 600 rubles per liter..

Which oil should I choose for the gearbox of a gazelle car?

Let's start with what our favorite plant pours... And the plant pours something cheaper - TAD 17.... In fact, this oil should be changed immediately at the first maintenance. I have always been amazed by such a disregard for the consumer, but this is a given...

The plant itself recommends pouring GL4 oil with a viscosity of 75W-90 into the gearbox; it is acceptable to pour GL5 oil with a similar viscosity, but it has a higher sulfur content and wears out the synchronizers somewhat faster.

If you are faced with a choice between mineral, semi-synthetic and synthetic oil, then you should definitely choose the last 2, despite the fact that they are more expensive. The fact is that in winter, using mineral water, gasoline consumption increases very much and the gears are very difficult to engage (until it warms up completely).

boxes), and starting the engine without pressing the clutch is almost impossible...

We agreed - we fill in high-quality GL4 75w-90, GL5 is also possible, but it contains more sulfur and wears out the synchronizers faster.

How much oil is included in a gazelle box?

Officially, according to the passport, 1.2 liters are poured into the box. But due to casting defects and various technological jambs, and various modifications, the actual volume of oil in the box varies in the range of 1.2 - 1.5 liters. In any case, you will have to buy 2 liters for replacement. You won’t get rich from 200 grams, and underfilling will ruin the box, so fill the oil strictly according to the level of the oil filler plug.

Replacement cost

Many GAZelle car owners change the gearbox oil themselves. In this case, the cost of the procedure will only include the price of consumables. In addition to new lubricant, flushing and solvent may be required. Oil will cost the buyer from 500 to 1000 rubles, washing liquid - 400-700 rubles, solvent - about 200 rubles. The purchase amount depends on the manufacturer, type of product and outlet.

Contacting a service center will cost slightly more. In addition to the price of consumables, the cost of performing the operation is taken into account. This figure depends on the category of the service center: the more popular it is, the more expensive it is. The car owner will need to prepare to pay from 500 to 1000 rubles just for the work.

Tools and materials needed to change the oil

From the oil change tool you need:

  • ratchet with a “24” head;
  • puller for removing the filter;
  • Packaging for work less than 6 liters;
  • household gloves;
  • garbage on the ground;
  • clean rags;
  • new filter and engine oil.

Suitable accessories: semi-synthetic motor oil "Lukoil Lux 10W-40", article no. 19299 (5L). The price of this can be about 1080 rubles. Original oil filter for VAZ engine. 4061012005 cost. 260 rubles.

Analogues: BIG Filter GB107. 150 rubles, Hola SL102. 190 rubles, Finwhale LF110. 250 rubles, MANN-FILTER W92021. 200 rubles.

Prices are valid for summer 2020 for the city of Moscow and the region.

We recommend that you read more information about the cleaning oils that are recommended for use when changing the main engine oil in your engine.

Video “Changing the oil in a GAZelle gearbox”

Watch a video from user KosTas about pouring oil into a Gazelle gearbox through a lever.

Using high-quality gear oil, as well as its timely replacement, is the key to the longevity of your car’s gearbox. Therefore, in this article we will try to figure out how much oil is in the Gazelle gearbox, what lubricant should be used, and also how to replace it yourself.

What is the oil change interval for the Gazelle gearbox?

Any modification of this car is accompanied by an instruction manual, in which the manufacturer clearly states that new oil should be poured into the Gazelle gearbox at least after 60 thousand kilometers.

However, this manufacturer's recommendation should only be followed when the vehicle is operated under normal conditions. If operation is carried out in urban conditions, with heavy loads, and also around the clock, this interval should be significantly reduced.

Possible malfunctions and repairs

Repair of the GAZelle Next gearbox may be required in the following cases:

GAZelle is one of the popular universal cars in Russia and the CIS countries. It can be used both for transporting various goods and for transporting people. Based on this, we can conclude that the operating conditions of the vehicle are quite harsh. In order for the car to work as long as possible, its components need to be serviced in a timely manner. This is especially true for the transmission, as well as the oil in the GAZelle box.

Oil selection

The gearbox oil purchased for replacement must be of proper quality.

Factors to consider when choosing oil:

  • instructions from the manufacturer regarding the characteristics of the lubricant for the gearbox of a specific vehicle modification;
  • operating conditions of the vehicle;
  • The volume of oil purchased must exceed what is poured into the box by at least 0.5-1 liter. This excess will be needed for possible addition of fluid during operation.

The climatic conditions in which the vehicle is operated plays a serious role when choosing a lubricant, since the degree of viscosity of the selected material depends on this.

In some cases, the manufacturer does not bother with recommendations regarding certain lubricant characteristics, but only indicates which standard the transmission fluid must meet. Most often this is SAE 75W.

The following oils can be recommended from proven products:

  • Castrol 75W140;
  • Mannol 75W80;
  • TNK Magnum Trans Gipoid Super 75W90.

This is not a complete list, however, you will be quite satisfied with any of the listed products.

The characteristics of transmission fluid meeting the SAE 75W standard are improved thanks to mineral additives. Due to the fact that a change in the viscosity of such a lubricant occurs when the temperature drops to -45˚ C, it can be used even in the coldest regions.

Description

ZIC GFT 75W-90 is a 100% synthetic gear oil for manual transmissions. The composition can be used for bridges of passenger cars and trucks. It is also permissible to use in construction equipment mechanisms in which the technical requirements for viscosity comply with SAE, API categories GL-4, GL-5 or MT-1.

Several types of special additives have been added to improve the performance properties of manual transmissions. In particular, additives were used that reduce the degree of wear of parts based on phosphorus, boron, as well as an EP anti-wear additive or dispersant. The content of esters in the composition can significantly reduce damage to metal parts and reduce friction.

Transmission fluid ZIK 75W-90 stands out among other compounds due to its increased fluidity at sub-zero temperatures. Characterized by excellent anti-friction performance. The use of this oil helps to significantly reduce noise during manual transmission operation. Outstanding friction properties guarantee reliable protection of all transmission parts from premature wear and increase service life. Reduced aggressiveness towards polymer components of the structure reduces the likelihood of leaks.

ZIC GFT transmission fluid was developed by SK Lubricants Corporation using 3 main elements. Yubase branded synthetic base oil made using hydrocracking technology, polyalphaolefins (PAO), and esters. Previously, it was known as ZIC GF TOP 75W-90, which was produced in tin cans.

A high degree of thermal and antioxidant resistance, as well as excellent protective properties against extreme mechanical degradation, ensure longevity of parts and reduce maintenance costs. Good viscosity and temperature characteristics of the transmission fluid over a wide range contribute to smooth gear shifting in winter as well as summer periods.

How much oil will you need?

The transmission fluid level should be monitored every 20 thousand km. If the oil level is low, add oil immediately. The volume of lubricant required for the Gazelle gearbox can vary depending on the modification, ranging from 1.2 to 1.6 liters. When purchasing lubricant, it is advisable to choose a 2-liter container so that some of the oil remains in stock.

IMPORTANT. It is extremely undesirable to operate a car with a low level of lubrication in the gearbox, since it can cause oil starvation of the gearbox elements, which can lead to their rapid wear.

What is needed for replacement?

To change the oil, you should purchase the necessary tools:

  • three-liter container for collecting waste liquid;
  • new gear oil;
  • a large syringe with a tube from a dropper or a special oil syringe to fill the liquid;
  • a small amount of clean rags to remove dirt and grease residue.

Just in case, you can purchase flushing material to clean the gearbox if necessary.

Step-by-step instruction

The oil change is carried out only on a warmed-up gearbox, since only in this case can almost all the waste be drained.

Your further actions will look like this:

  • the vehicle is installed on an overpass or inspection hole and is additionally secured with special stops;
  • the drain plug is cleaned of existing dirt, and at the same time we clean the area near the filler plug;
  • Using a 12mm hexagon, unscrew the drain plug, under which the prepared container should first be installed;
  • It will take at least 30 minutes for the liquid to completely drain;
  • if the waste contains a small amount of metal shavings or is too dark in color, the gearbox should be washed with pre-purchased flushing material;
  • after this, the drain hole should be tightened and the filler plug should be unscrewed;
  • using a syringe, fill the box with the required amount of lubricant corresponding to the modification of your Gazelle;
  • after the liquid is filled in, screw the filler cap into place;
  • To complete the process, you need to drive the car and then inspect the gearbox for lubricant leakage. If this exists, all deficiencies should be eliminated immediately.

Oil characteristics

GL-4 fluids are produced from mineral and synthetic base oils. To give them certain properties, packages of special additives and components are introduced into their composition.

Mineral and semi-synthetic oils of the GL-4 group have the following characteristics:

  • High thermal stability
  • High oxidative stability
  • Prevents scuffing
  • Reliably protects against wear and corrosion
  • High anti-foam properties
  • Excellent heat dissipation ability
  • Reduces fuel consumption

Video on the topic:

Any car will work properly if it is regularly and properly maintained. Working at a service station, I often come across the fact that Gazelle drivers, for some reason, do not consider it necessary to provide the car with consumables such as engine oil or transmission fluid.

The most they do is periodically add lubricant to the system, believing that for a “workhorse” this will do. Such actions are fundamentally wrong, since it is also necessary to fill the Gazelle’s gearbox with oil.

There are other problems that arise for owners of such vehicles. Often, the car enthusiast simply does not know what kind of oil to pour into the Gazelle box and how much such fluid is required. This point is very important, since the slightest overfilling or underfilling of the substance can lead to problems with the performance of the car.

Repair

Car enthusiasts prefer to repair UMZ and Cummins engines themselves. This saves money, but is not always justified, since a Cummins engine is recommended to be serviced and repaired at a car service center by specialists. Let's consider repairs for different types of Gazelle Business engines.

Repair of UMZ motors

Repairing UMZ gasoline engines is much easier and simpler than the diesel version. Thus, the most common minor malfunctions are friction and contamination of air and fuel supply elements. Therefore, it is recommended to change the fuel and air filters on time, as well as monitor the condition of the spark plugs and injectors.

Major repairs are done in a typical manner, as for all engines produced by the Ulyanovsk Motor Plant. The power unit cylinders can be bored to repair sizes of 100.5 mm, 101.0 mm and 101.5 mm. Subsequent borings can weaken the walls of the block and lead to the formation of cracks, and therefore the block is lined next.

As for the crankshaft, the most common repair sizes are 0.25 mm, 0.50 mm and 0.75 mm. But, there are cases when boring was carried out to dimensions of 1.00 mm and 1.25 mm. Of course, there is a danger of the shaft breaking.

The cylinder head is completely rebuilt. During the overhaul, guide bushings, valves, seats are changed and the condition of the camshaft is diagnosed. Repair valves are installed with an enlarged stem to +0.03 and +0.06.

Cummins repair

It is necessary to start with the fact that the Cummins engine is very unpretentious to fuel. This became possible thanks to a new, modernized fuel purification system. The power unit is equipped with a new CommonRail fuel supply system. In this case, fuel is supplied directly into the combustion chamber under high pressure.

When it may be necessary to top up or change the oil in a Gazelle gearbox

Information such as the volume of oil in the Gazelle gearbox will allow you to answer the question about the need to replace or top up it. The need to lubricate individual elements is due to the fact that without an oil product, the number of rubbing parts in a modern car will increase significantly and simultaneously.

Lubrication can significantly extend the performance of the gearbox and avoid an emergency situation.

The oil level in the gearbox must be constantly monitored by the driver. A special probe will help with this, on which there are marks of the maximum and minimum levels. It is recommended to check the lubricant level every 20 thousand km. Even if there are no visible leaks, the fluid may evaporate or decrease for some other reason.

In addition, the owner needs to select lubricants very carefully, as this can seriously damage the vehicle.

Since the car is used year-round and in not the most favorable conditions, it is best to constantly monitor the condition of the car. When the transmission fluid level has decreased, you need to add fresh fluid to the box as quickly as possible.

How often does a Gazelle gearbox need to be replaced?

In addition, how many liters of lubricant need to be poured into the Gazelle gearbox, you need to know how often this lubricant needs to be changed. Practice shows that there are a number of points during the operation of the machine that make it possible to determine the frequency of replacing the substance, namely:

  • the more intensely the driver switches gears, the faster the lubricant used becomes clogged;
  • Sooner or later, abrasive contact is created in the system, which means metal shavings begin to enter the liquid. Yes, it is very small, but over time there is a lot of this component, and it harms the operation of the gearbox;
  • the lubricant poured into the system loses its viscosity, acquires a dark tint and ceases to perform all the functions assigned to it.

In order to notice the problem in a timely manner, it is important not to lose vigilance, but to regularly monitor the condition of the lubricant. If in appearance it no longer meets the standards or has been flooded for a very long time, you should think about replacing it.

To help the driver, each container of transmission fluid indicates its service life. Experimenting and using the composition for a longer time is highly not recommended.

Step-by-step instructions for replacing the lubricant

Changing the oil in this vehicle yourself is not easy. Special procedures will need to be followed, but it is important to know how and in what order. So that readers can understand how this happens, I will give a step-by-step algorithm for general actions:

  1. Before changing the lubricant, you will need to check its level in the system. You need to clean the neck of the container from dirt and wipe the crankcase with a rag. All that remains is to unscrew the lid. It is necessary that the car is parked on level ground and wait until the oil drains into the crankcase.
  2. If, after unscrewing, the lubricant begins to flow in a trickle, then this is a signal that the oil is below the normal level.
  3. The lubricant will need to be replaced. To do this, you need a bucket or canister for working out, a syringe for adding lubricant, rags and new oil.
  4. The lubricant is drained through the drain hole, and then a new product can be poured into it. It is important to ensure that the normal level of the substance is achieved.

Nevertheless, it is recommended to entrust this procedure to experienced mechanics, especially if there is no place or time for the procedure.
