What are the dangers of choosing the wrong candles?
The spark plugs for Priora must be of high quality, otherwise the driver risks encountering the following malfunctions:
- When trying to start the engine, the starter will spin for a long time. In this case, the engine may not start or may start after some time. If you try to start the engine for a long time, there is a chance that the battery will die.
- When the power unit is operating, new noises will appear, we are talking about idling or warming up the internal combustion engine. Over time, noise uncharacteristic of engine operation may become louder.
- Fuel consumption will increase.
- The volume of harmful substances contained in exhaust gases will increase.
- Engine power will decrease, especially when driving uphill.
Which candles to choose?
To prevent such a development of events, you need to know which spark plugs are best installed on a Priora sixteen-valve engine. So, especially for car enthusiasts who need to purchase spark plugs for the Priora, the manufacturer has given recommendations regarding the selection of SZ specified in the service manual.
If there is no operating manual for the machine, a list of manufacturers whose products are recommended for domestic engines is given below:
- on the Priora there are 16 valves, the manufacturer allows the use of Russian SZ, model AU17 (AU15) DVRM;
- BERU brand products from a German manufacturer - 14FR7DU;
- NW British-made Champion - RC9YC;
- SZ made in Japan NGK - BCPR6ES;
- Danso Q20PR-U11;
- Czech products BRISK DR15YC-1/DR17YC-1;
- German SZ Bosch FR7DCU.
Today, prior manufacturers use SZ, the electrode in which is made of iridium, for example, Denso or NGK. Car owners claim that the use of iridium on the electrode allows them to start the engine in winter. Denso SZ have a longer service life compared to SZ with a metal electrode. Whether to choose Denso or not is everyone’s business, but before choosing, it is advisable to read reviews from motorists. Detailed information about the product of this manufacturer is presented in the article.
If you believe the reviews, Russian-made spark plugs are not the best option for the sixteen-valve Priora. Many motorists claim that they can be used in the summer, since in winter they do not provide the spark necessary to ignite the combustible mixture.
If you choose SZ Denso or NGK, or spark plugs from another manufacturer, be careful when purchasing. When purchasing a product, inspect its packaging - the country of origin of the product must be indicated. On candles where the brand name is indicated, the name must be written or engraved perfectly, without irregularities or chips. The thread must be perfectly straight (the author of the video about replacing the SZ is Dmitry Gruzdev).
Replacement Guide
How to change the spark plugs yourself on a Lada Priora 16 valves and what is needed for this? We describe the replacement procedure below. To replace the SZ with Denso or any others, no specific tools are required. Prepare a spark plug wrench; if you don’t have one, a regular 16mm spark plug socket will do.
Please note that the spark plug wrench or socket must be equipped with a special rubber band or a magnet inside. This is important, since the magnet will be able to hold the dismantled SZ suspended.
- Open the engine compartment and remove the plastic motor casing. When removing, be careful not to damage the fasteners.
- Disconnect the terminal from the ignition coil and unscrew the screw that secures it. Using a flat-tip screwdriver, pry up the spool and remove it. This is done for convenience. When removing the coil, be careful - damage to the device is not allowed, as additional financial costs will arise.
- The candle is located inside the spark plug well. It is impossible to get it without an extension cord, so use it for dismantling, but before removing it, you must disconnect all high-voltage wires. When removing, pay attention to the condition of the well - if there are malfunctions in the cylinder head, then there may be some motor fluid in the spark plug well. If there is oil, you need to replace the cylinder head gasket. It is impossible to carry out this procedure correctly at home, so it is better to turn to specialists. At this stage, if there is no oil in the well, it is recommended to blow it out with compressed air using a compressor - this will remove all dirt from it. If you are replacing the spark plug on a new car for the first time, you will need to apply force to dismantle the elements - a regular spark plug wrench may not be suitable here. Therefore, it is better to use a socket head with a wrench; if there is no wrench, then a powerful screwdriver will do.
- Be careful when unscrewing the spark plug. The key must be equipped with a magnet or rubber band so that the SZ can be held suspended. This is important, otherwise you may break the SZ insulator, and if this happens, it will not be easy to remove the fragments. This will be especially problematic if by chance they get inside the cylinder.
- Carefully remove the spark plug from the block. If you can’t simply dismantle the SZ, you can use the previously removed ignition coil. The coil can be placed on the shank of the element - this will make it easier to get it out.
- The spent SZ was dismantled. You can diagnose it by the carbon deposits that have formed on it. The presence of a red or orange coating indicates the presence of ferrocene additives in the fuel - if this is the case, then the gas station needs to be changed. If the driver uses fuel additives, this may cause deposits. If the carbon deposits are black, this indicates that the air-fuel mixture is too rich, as well as increased gasoline consumption; white, on the contrary, indicates a lean mixture. Read more about the colors of soot and options for removing plaque in the article. As for the reasons for a lean or enriched air mixture, they can be different. But if you saw that the tip of the insulator is basically clean, and there is no carbon deposits, you don’t have to worry - everything is in order with the car engine.
- You can begin installing the new SZ. Place the spark plug in the cleaned spark plug well. At first, you need to tighten the element without a knob or much effort. This is important so that the candle fits tightly into the thread, and if you use a wrench when the NW does not fit into the thread, you will ruin not only the candle, but also the well. Therefore, this step must be performed carefully. After the SZ is twisted by hand and goes in all the way, you need to use a wrench to tighten it. But even in this case, you cannot overdo it, there is a risk of breaking the thread.
- Once the spark plug is installed, you can replace the coil. Tighten the fixing screw until it stops and install the connector in place. The installation of the remaining SZ is carried out in a similar manner.
In order to avoid problems associated with the operation of spark plugs, especially in winter, it is necessary to install only high-quality spark plugs on your car. Our market today is teeming with low-quality fakes, so it can be difficult for a motorist to avoid falling for a low-quality product when making a purchase.
REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE
Any murzilka (operation book) for VAZ cars states that spark plugs must be replaced every 30 thousand km. mileage However, in practice, even the highest quality products rarely travel 30,000 km.
The first sign that a replacement needs to be made is a change in the normal functioning of the engine. You will notice changes in its idle speed, and there will also be problems with ignition.
Unscrew them and visually inspect the electrodes. In normal condition, the electrodes are light gray in color, with a minimal amount of brown deposits allowed. During operation, the electrodes become covered with a yellow or brown coating (this is a normal condition for the middle of their service life). When the ignition elements of the fuel mixture become obsolete, black metal deposits appear on the insulator, and the electrode burns out or melts.
It is also necessary to pay attention to the spark plug gap between the insulator and the electrode (ideally for Priora it should be 1.1 mm, which is indicated in the service book). The gap increases during operation, so if a check shows that the gap is 2-3 millimeters larger than it was originally, the spark plug needs to be replaced.
The gap can be adjusted by simply bending or pressing the electrode against the insulator, but this can only be done normally on new spark plugs; when worn, the electrode, as a rule, becomes very fragile and crumbles under rough influence.
In the image below you can see the stages of spark plug wear.
Stages of spark plug wear
If the electrode is intact, you can try to revive the product; to do this, you need to anneal the deposit on the electrode with a gas burner and, after it has softened, remove it with a metal brush. This must be done carefully so as not to damage the fragile structure.
Now let’s figure out how to replace spark plugs on a 16 valve Priora. To do this you will need a spark plug wrench, a screwdriver and a 10mm socket wrench to unscrew the coils.
Everything is done according to the following algorithm:
- Open the hood and remove the plastic protective cover from the engine;
- We remove the power wire from the ignition coils and unscrew the bolts that secure them;
- We pry up the coils with a flat screwdriver and take them out;
- We take a special key and unscrew the spark plugs. This may not be so easy to do, since high temperatures may cause the shrink thread to stick to the body of the part. Unscrew it carefully so as not to damage the structure, since removing fragments of insulator from the well is an extremely problematic task. If you have a compressor at hand, blow out the shrinkage well to remove dust and contaminants accumulated in it;
- We check the condition. If it is damaged or extremely worn, we install a new one. We insert the spark plug into the magnetic head of the key and screw it back in. There is no need to make any effort here - the thread should go smoothly, and after the body is held tightly in the seat, you need to tighten the thread with light force;
- All that remains is to install the coils in place and connect power to them.
Replacing spark plugs on an 8-valve Priora differs from the procedure described above due to their location. In 16-valve engines they are recessed into a well inside the cylinder block, while on 8-valve engines the spark plugs are placed on the surface of the block, so changing them is much easier.

Tips for choosing spark plugs for Lada Priora
Automotive spark plugs are a material that has a certain service life. They cannot be used forever, and sooner or later every motorist is faced with the need for their planned, or even urgent, replacement. And here the problem arises of choosing which candles, which brand and which marking to replace. After all, each manufacturer produces spark plugs for a specific gasoline engine. Its operating temperature, speed, load - all this must be taken into account. Both the Lada company and the Priora car in particular are no exceptions.
Spark plugs for Priora: choices
The manufacturer of Priora recommends installing domestically produced spark plugs, but they can easily be replaced with foreign analogues. Let's consider the classification:
- All spark plugs are divided into two-electrode and multi-electrode. Two-electrode ones have a side and a central electrode, while multi-electrode ones have one central and several side electrodes, respectively (usually 3). It is believed that multi-electrode ones have a greater lifespan and durability.
- Spark plugs differ in Priora and by type of material. So, the standard, classic option is copper electrodes. There are also rarer materials: iridium, platinum. Thus, iridium spark plugs on Priora are characterized by a smaller diameter of the central electrode, which ranges from 0.7 to 0.4 mm, while in standard nickel spark plugs this parameter is 2.5 mm. And a completely new product is pre-chamber spark plugs, in which the body itself is given the role of electrodes.
- Also, spark plugs are divided by thread diameter and size for the wrench head. Thus, spark plugs for a 16-valve Priora have a smaller thread diameter and wrench head size than spark plugs for a Priora 8-valve model.
- There are also four types according to such a parameter as heat value. The heat number is the average pressure at which it is easier to heat candles during testing. So, they are distinguished by types: cold type (heat number above 20), medium type (17-20), universal type (11-20), hot (11-14).
It is not always easy to figure out such complex technical parameters on your own, because a beginner does not understand many things, for example, what is the spark plug gap on a Priora. Therefore, when deciding which spark plugs to install on a 16-valve or 8-valve Priora, it is best to turn to specialists or follow the recommendations of the car manufacturer.
Oil in the engine well
Before unscrewing the spark plug, use a flashlight to check the condition of the engine head wells. If there is oil at the bottom, the engine “throws” engine oil into the well under increased load. In this case, the cylinder block gasket needs to be replaced. It can be done at an auto center under warranty.
You can remove engine oil stains using a medical syringe. It is convenient to remove dirt at the bottom of the well with compressed air from a compressor.
Replacing spark plugs on a 16-valve Priora is a simple job that every car owner can handle. The most important thing is the accuracy of its implementation.
Manufacturer's recommendations
It is unlikely that anyone will doubt which spark plugs the manufacturer will recommend for a Russian car? Naturally, domestic production. And this is natural - not always European, let’s say, refined quality can work effectively with our equipment. And so, spark plugs for Priora 16 valves must be marked - AU17DVRM. For an 8-valve engine – A17DVRM. A15DVRM are best suited for winter driving, as they are characterized by a low heat rating and, accordingly, will be easier to ignite in cold conditions.
However, many motorists choose foreign-made spark plugs for their Priora cars. Thus, the German companies BOSCH (WR7DC, FR7DCU), BERU (14R-7DU, 14FR-7DU) are very popular. The English company CHAMPION (RN9YC, RC9YC) is not far behind them. Automotive stores also have Czech ones, for example BRISK (LR15YC, DR15YC). These are high-quality, reliable spare parts, which, however, are no better or worse than domestic ones. Just a little more expensive.
When to change spark plugs
According to the technical inspection regulations, spark plugs on Priora must be replaced every 30 thousand kilometers. However, this interval is not always maintained, and they are subject to emergency replacement.
The need for replacement can be determined by engine performance. It becomes unstable at idle, the engine starts poorly, and increased fuel consumption is observed. Also, her appearance can tell about her condition. First of all, you should pay attention to burnt electrodes, both central and side. Cracks on the insulator of the central electrode are also a bad signal; chips in it should also be a warning. General sootiness indicates poor ignition, and gasoline or oil indicates its complete inoperability.

Spark plugs must be changed immediately when they fail. A planned update should be performed every 30 thousand kilometers. There are several indicators that indicate the need for an unscheduled replacement of spark plugs, namely: unstable engine operation, poor starting, excessive fuel consumption, poor throttle response or engine tripping.
The condition of the candle can be assessed based on external signs. For convenience, a table will be provided below, which will also help you understand whether your car requires replacement spark plugs .
Next we will talk about replacing spark plugs on VAZ 2170 , 2171, 2172 (Lada Priora 16 valve)
Before you start replacing, of course, you need to purchase new spark plugs from the auto store.
to replace the spark plugs of a Lada Priora with a special socket wrench “16” with an extension. The spark plug wrench or head must contain a magnet to hold the spark plug in place.
Reasons for incorrect spark plug operation
- One of the main reasons for their premature failure is low quality fuel. Gasoline may contain various impurities and may not meet standards.
- A malfunction of the valve system can also lead to malfunctions in the spark plug. As a rule, malfunctions of the valve system lead not only to burnout, but also to valves and pistons. So they may well become good “diagnosticians” for many automobile diseases.
- The wrong choice of spark plugs is another reason why they become covered with soot. So, if the heat rating is higher than recommended for a given engine, the tone may well fail.
- Sometimes oil gets into the combustion chamber, and then a black, oily coating forms on the spark plug, which makes it difficult to work.
- Black soot can not form from such reasons as contamination of the air filter, wear of the cylinder-piston group, or a crack in the insulator.
- Melting or burnout of the electrodes occurs if the cooling system is faulty.
- Even trying to start the engine in cold weather can cause the spark plug to fail. In this case, they may be flooded with a flammable mixture.
What a gap there must be!
Diagram of valve clearance measurement
The spark plug gap is the distance between the electrodes that are connected to produce a spark. Since the 16-valve VAZ-2112 is only an injection system, we will talk about the gap specifically for this injection system.
Gap size between spark plug electrodes
So, the normal gap on spark plugs is the distance between the electrodes, which is 1.00 - 1.13 mm . Exactly, going beyond these limits can cause a large number of problems, such as:
- Change in consumption (comparison with factory data).
- Floating speed.
- The car starts to shake.
- Oil in spark plug wells.
- And others.
How to measure and correct spark plug gap
The gap between the spark plugs can be checked using a special feeler gauge, which has a corresponding plate thickness marking. It should fit a little tight, but not too much. If the probe does not fit through or the gap is too far from ideal, then it is necessary to press the metal part (upper) of the electrode against the graphite one. After this, take measurements again and so on until it is perfect.
Flat probe for measuring and changing the gap between spark plug electrodes
Of course, stores usually sell spark plugs with the gap adjusted from the factory. But, long transportation can lead to the distance between the electrodes being broken, so before installation, it is necessary to adjust the spark plug gap on all spark plugs when replacing them.
A clear example of measuring the spark plug gap using a feeler gauge
Lada Priora - replacing spark plugs
Spark plugs do not always require complete replacement. Sometimes they can be annealed, which will return it to working condition. After this, clean with a soft steel brush to remove any remaining carbon deposits. Experienced motorists are advised to purchase a special gun to check the performance of spark plugs. This device can detect a defect in the spark breaking through to the spark plug body, or the spark wandering along the side electrode. But if, nevertheless, it is necessary to change the spark plug, then a certain procedure should be followed.
- The first thing you need to do is remove the plastic casing from the engine block.
- Then the mounting bolts of each coil are unscrewed, after which they can be removed using a flat-head screwdriver.
- Next, the candles are unscrewed one at a time.
- Since the spark plug is located in a recess, you will need a special long spark plug wrench to unscrew it.
- Unscrewing a candle requires some effort, because high temperatures create a sticking effect on the thread.
- Care must be taken as excessive force may damage the spark plug insulator. Removing the fragments will not be easy, and if they get into the cylinder, a labor-intensive operation will follow to disassemble the entire block.
- After the candle has been removed, you need to carefully examine it. You should be alert to burnt electrodes, traces of gasoline and oil, mechanical defects in the insulator, and large deposits on the body. The condition of the candle is important not only in itself. It may also indicate the condition of the engine. So it is important not to neglect the opportunity to make a “diagnosis” of your motor.
- A new spark plug is inserted into the head and then installed in place. Its twisting, on the contrary, should not take place with effort. Inaccurate movements can easily damage the threads of the cylinder head, which will require expensive repairs.
- After the candles are in place, you need to carefully tighten them with a knob.
- All other procedures are carried out in reverse order.
What else to look for when buying candles
Perhaps this advice will be unnecessary for many, but there have been cases when motorists got into trouble. So, when purchasing, you need to pay attention to the date of manufacture. According to the manufacturer's claims, it is only three years, even if it did not work. Preserved candles, that is, with a special preservative lubricant applied - 5 years. If you do not pay attention to the date of manufacture, then it is quite possible to purchase a low-quality, stale product. And then you shouldn’t be surprised that the same “same” spark plugs for Priora will last a minimum period.
The first thing to remember is that it is advisable to change the spark plugs as a whole set. But do not throw away the functional ones from the old kit. As a result of several replacements, you can collect a working set of used spark plugs, which you can carry with you in case of sudden failure.
DEVICE AND PURPOSE OF SPARK PLUG
All candles consist of,
- Metal.
- Ceramics.
- Graphite rod.
The ceramic spark plug insulator prevents the impulse from the ignition coil (spark generator) from going to ground. Inside the spark plug there is a metal electrode and a graphite core. On the so-called skirt with a thread for screwing it into a regular place, there is a curved protrusion, an electrode. This, one might say, is the “minus” element of the device. A high voltage current is supplied from the ignition coil to the Priora spark plug. Passing through the internal rod, it slightly replaces its properties in the graphite rod in such a way that, reaching the gap between the “plus” and “minus” electrodes, it forms a stable high-temperature flash, a spark. It is this that ignites the mixture of air and gasoline in the working chamber of the cylinder. This mixture is compressed by compression to a certain density at which a spark can ignite it.
Attention! These devices are produced for 8- and 16-valve Priora engines. Accordingly, for the first, the candles are made on a turnkey basis at 21, and for the second, at 16.
DIFFERENCE IN DIFFERENT TYPES OF CANDLES
Many car enthusiasts replace spark plugs without paying attention to the various markings on these devices. Then a surprise arises, how can it be that new parts have just been replaced and are already out of order. But the data is put on the candles for a reason. They are produced for three types of ignition.
- Contact.
- Electronic.
- For systems with ECM (Electronic Engine Control System).
Important! Although they seem to have no differences in appearance, however, one type cannot be replaced by another.
The fact is that candles for different purposes receive different currents accordingly. They can also be categorized. The contact system has a voltage of approximately 12-14 kV (thousands of volts). For cars equipped with an electronic ignition system with a mechanical drive, 18-21 kV. And accordingly, “injection” cars, in particular the Priora, have 20-25 thousand volts.
It would seem, so what's the difference? The secret to this lies in the graphite rod and the “skirt” material. Its properties differ for candles for different purposes. This is the so-called heat number.
NUMBER OF ELECTRODES
Many spark plugs are also produced with varying numbers of “negative” electrodes. From 1 to three. Our drivers believe that the more of these contacts, the better. However, this is not quite true. The fact is that, according to the heat rating, these devices were originally intended for engines with a large engine capacity. From 2 liters and above. Therefore, it does not always make sense to replace standard spark plugs with such options.
Replacing spark plugs on a Priora 16 cl
Replacing spark plugs on a Priora 16 cl is a necessary process in any car. The manufacturer that produces this or that car sets the period for replacing spark plugs, which depends on the mileage of the car. How often to change Priora spark plugs? On the Lada Priora, such manipulations, according to the maintenance rules, should be carried out every 30 thousand km, in the case of iridium spark plugs - every 60 thousand km.
Of course, there are situations when replacement is necessary much earlier than the specified period, for example, when the engine is malfunctioning or high fuel consumption. If you are faced with this issue, do not be alarmed, the process of replacing spark plugs in a car is quite simple and does not require much skill and time; even a novice motorist can carry out such an operation.
Automotive spark plugs how to choose
iridium spark plugs pros and cons, spark plug maintenance
If you are faced with the question of which spark plugs are best for a 16-valve Priora, give preference to A17DVMR and A15DVMR or their analogues from foreign manufacturers. It is recommended to make replacement within the timeframe specified by the manufacturer. Spark plug maintenance should be performed every 5 thousand km.
Types of spark plugs:
- Regular;
- Spark plugs with platinum tip;
- Iridium spark plugs for Priora;
If the question arises, iridium spark plugs or regular ones, of course, iridium ones. They significantly reduce fuel consumption, reduce the percentage of toxicity in exhaust gases and require replacement less often (iridium spark plugs have a service life of up to 60 thousand km), since they are made of a higher quality material - iridium. Now you know why iridium spark plugs are better than regular spark plugs! But, accordingly, this type of candles differs markedly in price. There are also single-electrode and multi-electrode spark plugs. When replacing, it is recommended to use the first ones.
Do not buy a product from an unknown manufacturer and be sure to check the packaging for mechanical damage, the date of manufacture and the warranty when purchasing. Regular candles will last about 3 years, preserved ones - 5 years, thanks to a special lubricant that is removed with a solvent before installation.
How to replace spark plugs on a Priora
To replace spark plugs on a Lada Priora, you will need a spark plug wrench with a rubber band and a magnet, a 16 mm socket wrench, a 10 mm open-end wrench, a rag and a flat-head screwdriver. If you do not have a spark plug wrench with the required coating, use an ignition module. Place the end of the module over the insulation, pull out carefully and check for damage.
So, replacing spark plugs on a Priora 16 cl:
1.) Open the hood and remove the roof from the engine by unfastening the clips;
2.) Pull the terminals out of the coils;
3.) Remove the block and unscrew the mounting bolt with a 10 mm wrench;
4.) Now you can remove the ignition coil;
5.) Unscrew the spark plugs, but very carefully. Do not break the insulator, otherwise you will have to suffer later to get the fragments out of the cylinder. Use spark plug key;
NOTE: What to do if you can’t unscrew the spark plugs. Then the removed coil will come to our aid. To do this, we put it on the shank of the candle and pull it out. As a result, the candle was removed.
6.) The old spark plugs are removed and new ones are installed. Using a round feeler gauge, check the gap between the electrodes. The distance between the main and side electrodes should be the same, no more than 1.1 mm;
7.) Also screw the spark plugs in carefully, otherwise the threads may be damaged and the spark plug will break off.
8.) Screw the coils, the fastening bolt and return the terminals to their place.
9.) Cover the engine with a cover. Ready!
— Red carbon deposits on spark plugs are caused by ferrocene additives contained in gasoline.
— Black deposits on the spark plugs are caused by increased fuel consumption and a too rich mixture.
— White deposits on the spark plugs are due to the fact that the mixture is very low in octane number. And the absence of plaque and cleanliness of the spark plugs indicate complete order with your engine.
Now you are a real specialist and you know why carbon deposits form on candles!
How to check the performance of spark plugs? To make sure you did everything correctly, just start the car. If engine performance confuses you, check the spark plug gaps and terminals. Did not help? Then it’s better to contact a specialist and let him diagnose your car.
Tips for replacing spark plugs on a Priora:
- The HV wire should be pulled out carefully, holding the tip (do not pull or yank).
- Remember the order in which you unscrew the spark plugs. You can simply add them in the correct sequence.
Now you know how to change the spark plugs on a Priora, why carbon deposits form on the spark plugs, and how to remove the ignition coil on a Priora! The most important thing is not to rush and do everything carefully, then you will succeed!
Spark plug gap VAZ Priora 16 valves
Finval, gaps and correction
I professionally diagnose ignition and injection systems, so I was looking forward to testing the spark plugs. What is the result of the AP test? 22, 2004 ?staff? candles from Engels lost? not surprised. Although I noticed that the factory-fitted spark plugs and those sold in the store are very different. But the fact that Finwhale candles were among the leaders? stunned! Our experience of ?communication? with these candles indicates that they do not work well. Maybe they sell different Finwhale in Taganrog and Moscow?
There are also comments on the content of the article. Why do some of your spark plugs have a gap of 0.8 mm, and others? 1 mm? For the VAZ-2111 engine (as you correctly noted on page 60), the gap should be 1 mm. It turns out that some of the results are incorrect? Why do you claim that injection timing correction based on signals from the oxygen sensor is short-term and is needed only in transient conditions? It seemed to me that just the opposite, correction “by lambda?” needed in steady-state conditions (except for the enrichment mode at a load close to maximum). Maybe I'm wrong about something? I will be glad if you correct it.
Andrey Oleynik, Taganrog
AR: According to official information, the founder of the newly formed Finwhale company is the German holding Grunntech GmbH, which orders the production of spare parts from other manufacturers. We know for sure that Finwhale spark plugs are now produced at the factories of Bosch in Germany and Brisk in the Czech Republic (only German origin is indicated on all packaging). It is possible that this circumstance may explain such polar assessments of candles of this brand. We know nothing about other factories where Finwhale candles can be produced.
A spark gap of 1 mm is recommended by VAZ only for spark plugs that are installed on a conveyor? in our case it is EZ A17DVRM. Are the gaps and applicability of other spark plugs determined by the spark plug manufacturer himself? for example, Brisk recommends the LR15YC model with a gap of 0.8 mm for the VAZ-2111 engine. And the Eyquem spark plugs came with a sign requiring the gap to be set to 0.8 mm.
We were not clear about the correction. Of course, the lambda probe optimizes the mixture composition in steady state conditions. At the same time, he plays a supporting role, “sharpening” fuel and air ratio for efficient operation of the converter. But in the case of Bosch WR7DCX spark plugs, missing flashes caused the lambda probe to record too “poor” conditions. mixture and require constant enrichment from the controller, which negatively affected engine performance.
Changing spark plugs for Lada Priora
In accordance with the maintenance regulations for the Lada Priora car, we replace spark plugs every 30 thousand kilometers. The illustrated step-by-step instructions below will help you complete this operation.
The manufacturer recommends using spark plugs AU17DVRM, AU15DVRM, Bosch FR7DCU, Brisk “SUPER” DR15YC-1 or DR17YC-1. We carry out the work on a cold engine.
On engine 21126, pressing the latch on the canister purge valve...
...remove the valve from the engine casing bracket.
Pull up and remove the plastic engine cover.
By pressing the latch of the wire block, disconnect the block from the ignition coil.
Remove the ignition coil from the spark plug well.
Using a high “16” spark plug socket with an extension, unscrew the spark plug...
...and take it out of the spark plug well.
Install the spark plug in the reverse order. When screwing in a spark plug, it is necessary to rotate the extension with the head by hand, and not with a wrench or ratchet, to avoid damaging the threads of the spark plug hole in the cylinder head. If the spark plug does not follow the thread, strong resistance to rotation will be felt. In this case, it is necessary to completely unscrew the spark plug and, after cleaning the threads, re-tighten it. Finally tighten the spark plug to a torque of 25–30 Nm.
Attention! Over-tightening the spark plugs can damage the threads in the spark plug holes in the cylinder head.
We replace the remaining spark plugs in the same way.
Removal
- First of all, for safety reasons, remove the terminals from the battery.
- Then remove the protective plastic decorative cover from the machine motor. To do this, in its far left corner we disconnect the connector of the solenoid valve for purge the adsorber. Then unscrew the plug from the engine oil filler neck. Now lift up and remove the cover. We put the plug back on the neck. It is worth noting that on some models of the Lada Priora family the decorative cover is fixed with nuts.
- Next, it is recommended to change the spark plugs one at a time. This will reduce the risk of foreign objects getting into the engine and help avoid mixing up the order of suitable wires.
- Unscrew the bolt securing the high-voltage ignition coil. The bolt head can be either hexagonal (ten) or in the form of an asterisk. Therefore, non-standard tools may come in handy. Now remove the terminals from the coil and take it out.
- Unscrew the spark plug with a spark plug wrench and extension. This must be done with care so as not to break its insulator. After all, getting the insulator fragments out of the well will be quite labor-intensive. If this happens, you can use a piece of plasticine to clean the well. If a threaded connection sticks, it is worth pre-warming the engine.
- Carefully remove the candle. If there is no holder on the spark plug wrench, you can use the released high-voltage coil to remove the spark plug.

Replacing spark plugs
The maintenance plan includes replacing the spark plugs every 30,000 km. This interval seems realistic to us and it is not worth extending it. You need to carefully monitor the serviceability of the ignition system, especially on cars equipped with a catalytic converter - we have already talked about this. But it’s still worth taking a close look at the removed spark plugs: below is what carbon deposits on a spark plug can tell you.
By the way, if you removed the spark plugs to check between replacements, it is better not to clean them with your hands. This will damage the spark plug's middle electrode insulating layer (steatite). However, you can check the gap between the electrodes.

Tips: To make it easier to screw in and then remove the spark plug, you can apply a little graphite from a soft pencil to the threads or a little copper grease. Oil or regular grease causes the spark plug to stick to the cylinder head threads.
A defective spark plug thread is not a reason for despair! In this case, the workshop will supply a special threaded bushing (for example, a Heli-Coil insert).
Soot on candles
Spark plugs, in a certain sense of the word, are witnesses to combustion in the engine. The appearance of the spark plugs (carbon deposits) allows you to determine whether the engine is operating optimally. The engine should be thoroughly warmed up first on a country road or highway. Control after a short distance may lead to incorrect conclusions. Look at the tip of the insulator cone with the middle electrode and side electrodes.
- The tip of the insulator cone is gray or brownish in color: the injection system is well adjusted, the engine runs economically.
- Heavy deposits: This may be caused by additives in the engine oil or fuel, or by increased oil consumption. You may need to change the brand of oil or fuel.
- Black soot-like deposits: the spark plug does not reach the self-cleaning temperature due to frequent short trips, incorrect heat rating.
- The tip of the insulator cone is brown: the ignition timing is too early, the electronic control of the ignition timing or the knock sensor is not functioning.
- Traces of melting on the middle and side electrodes: glow ignition caused by deposits in the combustion chamber, overheated injectors, incorrect ignition timing, broken ignition timing, faulty knock sensor or engine overheating.
- The insulator cone is broken, in the initial stage it is distinguishable as a thin crack: detonating combustion due to poor fuel, incorrectly adjusted ignition, misplaced ignition timing, faulty knock combustion sensor, insufficient engine cooling or lean mixture due to the entry of unaccounted air.
- Oily layer on the electrodes and inside of the spark plug: damaged piston rings, valve guides or valve stem seals.
- If there are no indicated signs on the surface of the spark plug, but the engine still starts slowly or runs intermittently, the cause may still lie in the spark plugs. Invisible cracks in the ceramic insulator can become filled with condensing fuel during a cold start, causing spark leakage. Plugs may fail during operation, although a spark is visible when the spark plug is removed.
Gap between electrodes
The mixture of fuel and air, as well as combustion products, have a corrosive effect on the metal electrodes of the spark plugs. And the high voltage, when a spark jumps, pulls out particles of metal, which is why the gap between the electrodes increases during operation. The following gap values between the spark plug electrodes are acceptable:
- 4- and 5-cylinder engines: 0.7-0.9 mm
- 6-cylinder engines: 0.9-1.1 mm
With the three-electrode spark plugs used in the Audi 80, the igniting spark can “choose” the shortest spark gap. Therefore, it is unlikely that additional bending of the electrode will be required.
In accordance with the maintenance regulations for the Lada Priora car, we replace spark plugs every 30 thousand kilometers. The illustrated step-by-step instructions below will help you complete this operation.
LADA > Priora
The manufacturer recommends using spark plugs AU17DVRM, AU15DVRM, Bosch FR7DCU, Brisk “SUPER” DR15YC-1 or DR17YC-1. We carry out the work on a cold engine.
Lada Priora Hatchback EVEN › Logbook › Selecting and replacing spark plugs for a Prioro engine 16 cl
Hello everyone guys)) finally there’s no banging outside the window
and I was in the mood to scribble a couple of lines into my modest little bortovich)
As they say, not even a year has passed, the candles began to play pranks)
I did not delay the replacement, since over time carbon deposits form on the spark plugs and the quality of the spark deteriorates, misfires appear and gasoline consumption increases. There is a high probability that the car will not start in cold weather. Afterwards, the spark plug begins to short out, which negatively affects the ignition module.
I'll start from the very beginning! Back when there was the first car
When replacing the spark plugs for the first time (and this happened with the replacement of all consumables the next day after purchase), I paid attention to the spark plugs that the first owner had, they were BOSCH Super 4
The previous owner immediately admitted that from the moment of purchase he installed BOSCH Super 4
30 thousand
on them and advised them to change them.
Without departing from the topic, the vehicle documentation states that spark plugs are changed every 30 thousand km
- however, in practice they need to be changed more often.
The main reason
is poor fuel quality.
There are many signs that the spark plugs need to be replaced, some of them are:
the engine speed begins to fluctuate at idle, excessive fuel consumption, poor cold starts.
Therefore, the choice of candles is a very piquant moment, and even as the owner of a basin, I try to buy the best without sparing money in the hope that it will last longer.
So, I found the same BOSCH Super 4
25 thousand km
on them and sold them along with the car, no complaints, normal start-up in winter, and stable consumption.
How to extend the life of spark plugs?
There is such a thing as self-cleaning spark plugs. This is, in some way, cleaning off carbon deposits when the engine is running at high speeds. You should operate the car correctly and observe basic things. For example, do not fill spark plugs in winter or allow the engine to warm up a little before driving.
Then I bought a Priorka
mileage was 13 thousand km
Of course, the first thing I did was put the sting in the consumables, unscrewing the spark plugs from the wells, I was very surprised that the girl who used the car before me drove on
denso iridium power ik20 spark
In short, after googling I realized that it’s not worth changing them yet because the price of the set was impressive)
12 thousand on them
km installed the exhaust and flashed the car.
But in the cold season, especially when the air temperature is less than -20
I began to notice that I needed to oil the starter for 5-6 seconds (((this alerted me.
In short, I decided to change it and started looking for a specific model of denso iridium power ik20
because I really liked it, but after searching car markets I couldn’t find this particular model ((they offered something similar but didn’t dare, the price didn’t scare me but I didn’t want to take the risk)))
In general, I had to go back to the old proven BOSCH Super 4))) I don’t know whether it was joy or disappointment in the cold to the flesh -33
on them the car started with half a turn, but in terms of dynamics the occupant felt a failure in the dynamics ((didn’t attach much importance, didn’t bother and drove for fun))
Afterwards I drove a Boschakh in combat conditions for 17 thousand km
I noticed that at high speeds something was wrong (((I unscrewed it and realized that something was wrong)
Again, like clockwork, I put on the same boots and roll 20 thousand
no complaints!
I replaced them due to switching to propane, and the installers recommended BRISK SILVER
Koroch drove 20 thousand on BRISK SILVER
and again it started to adjust as if the rollers were standing))) I unscrewed it and there was an oil painting)) with one final sadness (((
Lately I’ve come across a lot of notes from prior drivers and not only which spark plugs to choose, after driving two types of spark plugs I came to the conclusion that by overpaying 3 times for the vaunted spark plugs I’m rolling back the same 20 thousand km
from replacement to replacement, just like stock because you yourself understand what we pour into petrol.
And from this experience I can say with confidence that it is more practical to install stock AU17DFMRV
without a twinge of conscience, unscrew them and throw them over the fence with a mileage of 20 thousand
Why, with sadness in your soul, throw away candles that are 3-4 times more expensive, which are not worth the money))) and there the taste and color of the markers are different, maybe with serious Denso engines it justifies itself, but in my case this overpayment is not justified)
I screwed in the spark plugs, turned them on a couple of times, and to my surprise it went more fun)
I am not imposing anything on anyone, I am describing personal observations.
I will also be glad to hear your opinions, friends.
All the best and prosperity, see you soon)
