The timing belt is a mechanism that controls the valve timing in the engine. The device synchronizes the operation of the camshaft and crankshaft. The stability of the entire engine depends on the coordination of the actions of these two parts. So that the shafts rotate synchronously, a belt (or chain) drive is used in the timing mechanism. The latter is less common at the moment. The chain is too heavy and more difficult to replace. Modern manufacturers use belt drive. The Kia Spectra is no exception. Replacing the timing belt, marks and other useful information are further in our article.
When to change?
So, the belt performs the function of synchronizing the rotation of the shafts. The element operates constantly under voltage, even at idle. Therefore, it is important to know the regulations. When should the Kia Spectra 1.6 timing belt be replaced? The manufacturer specifies a period of 45 thousand kilometers. It is worth noting that on Spectra models the belt life is lower than on Solaris and Kia Rio (here the manufacturer regulates the period at 60 thousand kilometers). Some car owners believe that replacement should be done even more often - within 35 thousand kilometers. However, the final verdict can be made after an external inspection of the belt.
How to determine wear yourself?
It is impossible to determine anything by ear, as is the case with chains (which begin to knock and stretch). You can make sure that the machine needs a belt replacement only by visually inspecting the part. So, for this, the timing case is dismantled and the element is examined for deformations. Replacing the timing belt (Kia Spectra 1.6 is no exception) is required if the following is found on it:
- Cracks.
- Tears.
- Oil drips.
- Clear wear on the teeth on the inside.
- Other mechanical defects.
You don't always need to follow the rules. If the above defects are detected up to 45 thousand, an urgent replacement of the timing belt is required. The Kia Spectra can be repaired with your own hands. In this case, it is not necessary to visit a service station. The only thing that is required from you is a set of tools, a new belt and free time. In total, the replacement will take from 1 to 2 hours. All work must be done during the day (or in a well-lit room), since it is very important to set the marks (we will tell you why later).
Do valves bend on a KIA Ceratoye?
Many car enthusiasts are interested in whether the valves on a KIA Cerato are bent. It is impossible to answer this question unambiguously. The listed problems associated with the engine accompany the car throughout its operation. In addition to this, the engine on the Cerato is “disposable”, and if the valve is bent and/or the piston is jammed in the cylinder head, then restoration will require replacing the entire block, since boring to the repair size is not provided.
The valves can only be bent if the timing chain breaks, which is unlikely.
Let's get started
So, how is a timing belt replaced? The Kia Spectra is equipped with a plastic decorative engine trim - the first thing we do is remove it. It is secured with four bolts. Next we need to remove the alternator and power steering belt, since they are also connected to the crankshaft pulley. To move the amplifier pump (it will interfere with our work), we completely lower the fixing bolt to the engine. How do you then replace the timing belt yourself? The Kia Spectra continues to stand still, while we tear off the pump mounting bolts and remove the engine splash guard. If the car is equipped with an additional iron crankcase protection, remove it too. Next, we dismantle the plastic casing that contains our belt. After this we find the “I” mark and the notch. We place the tooth between the identification marks. On the exhaust pulley we find the “E” mark. We align the pulley in the desired direction. After this, remove the car from the gear and unscrew the crankshaft pulley bolt with a head. An important point is to turn the key clockwise. Twist until the notches and marks coincide with the protrusions. Helpful advice - for convenience, the marks can be marked with bright paint or a pencil. Next, put the car in 5th gear and press the brake. Here we need an assistant who at this moment will tear off the bolt of the lower crankshaft pulley. Be careful not to let the key fall out of its seat. Next, we set the position of the lower pulley so that the arrow coincides with the marks on the flange. Then we remove the spring with rollers and the old timing belt. We install new rollers, while holding the upper pulley with a wrench. An important point is to put on the belt so that all the marks remain in place. The arrows on it should point forward, as in the photo above. Next, install the roller spring.
