Even now, when encountering some kind of malfunction on a Nissan manufactured before 1993, many auto mechanics try to avoid self-diagnosis, because without “getting inside” all the principles of self-diagnosis, it is almost impossible to correctly read the code or fault codes on Nissans that have a computer such as in the above figure. The electronic control unit on Nissan models can be located:

* under the passenger seat; * behind the false panel “to the left of the passenger’s left foot.”

There are several self-diagnosis modes available.

Selecting the desired self-diagnosis mode - Turn on the ignition; — Make sure that the mode selector is in the extreme left position. Mode No. 1 : checking the functionality of the oxygen sensor (Oxygen sensor) - Turn on the ignition, start the engine and let it warm up to normal operating temperature; — The mode selector is in the extreme left position; — If the green LED is lit, then the Oxygen sensor is working and is in good condition; — If the green LED is NOT lit, then this indicates that the oxygen sensor has failed and the computer is currently calculating the amount of fuel for the engine to operate by default, that is, according to the average indicators that are stored in its memory. 2. Mode No. 2 : checking the quality of the fuel-air mixture - Start the engine and let it warm up to operating temperature; The red LED should “blink” 2 times per second; — If the red LED does not light, then the fuel-air mixture is rich; — If the red LED is lit, then the fuel-air mixture is lean; If two LEDs are lit at the same time: red and green, then the composition of the fuel-air mixture is ideal; 3. Mode No. 3: self-diagnosis mode of the engine and automatic transmission - When entering mode No. 3, the self-diagnosis system flashes red and green LEDs to “indicate” a malfunction. For example: one flash of a red LED and three flashes of a green LED - this is code 13 (engine coolant temperature sensor malfunction). Ten flashes of the red LED and five flashes of green - code 105 (exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve malfunction). 4. Mode No. 4 : checking control sensors - After entering this mode, the control sensors are checked: - “IDL” contact of the throttle position sensor (TPS); — Vehicle speed sensor. 5. Mode No. 5 : checking the serviceability of the electronic engine control system in real time. A test drive is performed, during which, in case of any malfunctions, you can read the code or fault codes directly while driving, for example, the System may show code 32 - Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve malfunction.

Erasing self-diagnosis codes On different car models and different years of manufacture, as well as their configuration and “direction” (that is, for which countries the car is intended), erasing fault codes can also occur in different ways. — Disconnect the battery for a period of at least 24 hours; — Being in the state of self-diagnosis mode No. 2, go to the state of mode No. 1; — simply disconnect the battery for up to 3 minutes. Fault codes: You should be very careful about the correspondence of the fault table for each specific engine, because on Nissan cars of different years of manufacture, with different configurations, they can differ, and differ significantly.

However, later NISSAN moved to a more convenient method and principles of self-diagnosis on more modern car models.
