How to use double-sided tape when tuning a car

The process of gluing various accessories to a car using double-sided tape is as follows:

First, the surface must be cleaned of dirt and dust; it is better to wipe it several times with a damp and dry cloth, since the cleaner the surface, the better the connection will be.
The immediate area of the connection must be wiped with a cloth soaked in alcohol to degrease the surface.
Now you need to mark the place where everything will be glued. This is done with chalk or a pencil. The pencil must be soft, otherwise the coating may be damaged.
Now the film that serves for protection is removed from the tape. An additional amount of glue is applied to the tape, approximately five to seven drops, and not in a solid line. This will increase the adhesion strength and extend the service life, everything will hold tightly and reliably, and even rain, frost or car washing will not harm such a connection. If you use double-sided tape from the ZM company, then this procedure is not required, since the adhesive composition is very high quality and reliable.
Now you just need to press down the part to be glued in the pre-marked places and wait. Maximum adhesion occurs after approximately ten to twelve hours. During this period of time, it is better to protect the car from rain; it is also not worth washing it. After the glue on the parts has dried, you can safely wash the car.

Masking tape: why is it needed when repairing a car and how to choose

The other day I decided to thoroughly work on the appearance of my car, and first of all, to deal with the rust. For this I took a rust converter, a primer and matte black paint from Abro. The question arose: what and how to protect the rest of the surface? I immediately thought of masking tape. Today, it is produced on the basis of paper, polyethylene foam, fabric, bitumen and even aluminum. I chose paper masking tape 18 mm wide and 47.5 meters long. The manufacturer is still the same, Abro.

Why exactly paper tape? Firstly, it adheres well to the surface. Secondly, it is quite durable, does not get wet and is not affected by solvents. Thirdly, paper tape can be used at sub-zero air temperatures. Among its other advantages are resistance to high humidity, compatibility with paints and varnishes, and elasticity. You can attach such a tape without fear that it will damage the surface. What is important is that the price of such a tape is low, and it is suitable not only for car repairs.

What is good about the Abro tape?

Painting tape for a car is good because it can be used even when hot drying and painting a car in heat chambers. In order for the tape to stick better, I first cleaned the surface of the body with alcohol. The tape attached easily, without much effort. After completing the work, it was also easy to remove. For room renovations, such as painting walls, this tape works just as well as other masking tape. After removing the Abro tape, no traces remain on the surface.

Recommendations for use

Masking tape should be removed from the surface immediately after the work is completed, otherwise the adhesive will harden and will be difficult to remove.

If for some reason the tape was not removed immediately, the adhesive can be removed using a solvent. From some surfaces, such as wood, glue residues can be removed with vegetable oil, while ceramics or glass can be cleaned with acetone or alcohol. To remove glue from a car, it is better to use professional cleaners.

Remember that when repairing a car, you should not skimp on masking tape or be careless in protecting surfaces. As practice shows, it is better to spend 10 minutes carefully attaching the tape rather than then thinking about how and with what to remove the paint. It is especially important to pay attention to protecting your vehicle when using aerosols, since droplets of substances do not always fall exactly where you are aiming.

Removing double-sided tape

Sometimes it happens that it is necessary to remove tape from the car body. This can happen for various reasons: replacing an accessory or simply removing it, sometimes the part is damaged and comes off on its own. In this case, not only part of the tape remains on the body, but also traces of glue. Below are instructions on how to properly remove double-sided tape so as not to leave marks:

Glue a second one on top of the tape to be removed, leaving one end free. Then, by pulling it, both tapes are torn off at once.
To quickly remove both the tape and glue residues, you can treat them with a weak solution of WHITE spirit or simple alcohol. You can also use kerosene or thinner. After moistening the cloth, wipe the surface. However, you need to be careful, because particularly aggressive substances can damage the thin layer of paint on the body.
You can use a rubber attachment for a drill or screwdriver. The principle of operation is the same as that of a regular eraser. After using it, the surface can be wiped with a damp cloth to remove dust.
If nothing else is at hand, you can use sunflower oil by moistening a rag or cloth.
Also, one of the options for removing glue is to heat the place where its traces remain. This can be done either with an ordinary household hair dryer with high power or with a construction hair dryer. After heating, traces of glue must be carefully removed with a plastic spatula. However, it is necessary to ensure that the surface does not become too hot, as this can damage the paintwork.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE OF THE ACTIVATOR:

Clean the surface and part from dirt, moisture and dust. Degrease the surface with ethyl alcohol. Treat areas of contact with the adhesive layer with a cloth soaked in an adhesion activator. The best result is achieved when processing the surface in “one pass”. Installation should be carried out after the primer has dried, no less than 1 minute after treatment. Please note that the smaller the thickness of the applied primer layer, the higher the adhesive properties and reliability of the connection. Parts treated with an adhesion activator must be installed no later than an hour after applying the primer. The operating temperature range for applying 3M adhesion activator is from 15 to 30 degrees Celsius. Shelf life is 12-14 months from the date of manufacture. The production date is marked on each package. Broken package integrity leads to rapid evaporation of active substances and complete impossibility of intended use

CHEMICAL COMPOSITION:

Cyclohexane, xylene, ethylbenzene, ethyl acetate, acrylic polymer, epoxy resin, isopropanol.

FEATURES AND NUANCES:

The primer should only be applied to areas in contact with double-sided tape and should not be applied to surfaces outside the installation area of the part to be glued. After the adhesion activator has dried on shiny or painted surfaces, the formation of slightly noticeable white or yellowish stains is allowed. If necessary, a layer of dried primer can be removed with acetone, which can be dangerous when working with plastics or painted surfaces. When applying the activator to painted parts, special care should be taken. Since the activator contains quite aggressive chemicals, the surface layers of paint or varnish may be dissolved. Therefore, you should not rub the activator. It is enough to moisten a clean, dry surface in “one pass” without rubbing and allow the layer to dry. For installation of fiberglass products or materials with a non-uniform internal surface, it is recommended to pre-treat with fine sandpaper and paint the areas for installation of double-sided tape.

PRECAUTIONS:

The primer wears off very quickly. From the moment you open the package, you have literally a few minutes to apply it to the surface. The activator has a pungent odor, is quite caustic and flammable, is harmful if inhaled and in contact with skin, can damage the throat if swallowed and cause an allergic reaction. In case of contact with eyes or skin, rinse with plenty of water. If signs or symptoms persist, consult a doctor immediately and show the packaging or composition.
