Repairing a car air conditioner - how to detect and fix a breakdown?

Air conditioning does not work on Ford Focus 2 - Replacing the air conditioning clutch

This work took us about 60 minutes. Cost of replacing the air conditioner clutch: 2400 rubles.
Air conditioner clutches are in stock
. Since the beginning of summer, most Focus 2 owners have problems turning on the air conditioner. Most often, the problem is not the lack of freon, but the air conditioner clutch. We do not recommend installing used ones. Our service always has new couplings, belts and pulleys - a complete repair kit.

Our long-time client contacted us with a similar problem and we got to work

To gain access to the air conditioning compressor, and the clutch is located in it, it is necessary to dismantle the engine protection. To do this, you need to unscrew the bolts.

In our case, a simple boot acts as protection. The car owner did not install iron protection.

In addition to protecting the engine, you need to unscrew the right fender liner

Along the way, with little access, the technician removes the compressor pulley fasteners

Next we unscrew the wheel

After removing the wheel, bend the fender liner

Now we have full access, after which replacing the Ford Focus 2 air conditioning clutch is possible. Without removing the wheel, at home, it is extremely difficult to carry out this work.

To remove the pulley, remove the retaining ring

This is what the removed retaining ring looks like

In addition to the standard set of tools, we will need a special puller

The main thing is not to break the thread

The pulley is unscrewed and can now be removed

Removed, worn pulley. It will be replaced with a new one according to customer's request

We now have access to the A/C clutch itself, but as with the pulley, the circlip must be removed

This is what the retaining rings look like. It is difficult to confuse them when installing - different diameters

Removing the air conditioner clutch

The clutch itself is electronic and has a terminal. It must be carefully disconnected without damaging the wiring.

Faulty A/C clutch

Insert a new coupling

Secure with a locking ring

Next we install a new pulley

And secure it with a locking ring.

Almost everything is ready

Finally, screw in the damper fasteners for the pulley. They also asked to install it new.

All that remains is to put on the belt, but to do this you need to slightly loosen the air conditioning compressor fasteners

Next we put on the belt

The car is ready

All that remains is to reinstall the fender liner, engine protection and wheel. We will not show this process, since you have already seen it at the beginning of the article.

The Ford Focus 2 can be equipped with either a heating and ventilation system or a heating, ventilation and air conditioning system, which serves to create the most comfortable conditions for the driver and passengers, regardless of weather conditions. The heating and ventilation system includes an outside air filter, heater, heater fan, air ducts and deflectors. Through the air ducts, air from the heater is supplied to the windshield and side window vents, to the central and side deflectors on the instrument panel, to the ventilation holes in the instrument panel frame to supply air to the feet of the driver and passengers, and is also supplied to the feet of rear seat passengers.

The system is controlled by turning the knobs located on the heating, ventilation and air conditioning control unit. The control unit is installed on the center console of the instrument panel.

The heater housing is located behind the center console and is attached to the instrument panel and instrument panel frame. The following are installed in the heater housing: an outside air filter (cabin filter); heater fan; fan motor speed controller; distribution dampers that direct air flow to certain areas; a heater radiator connected by hoses to the engine cooling system, through which coolant constantly circulates. The air is heated by the heat of the engine coolant circulating through the heater radiator tubes.

To increase the air supply to the cabin while the car is moving, as well as when parked, a heater fan is used. The intensity of air supply into the car interior is determined by the fan rotation speed. On a vehicle not equipped with climate control, the blower motor may rotate at four different speeds. The evaporator serves for heat exchange between the air entering the vehicle interior and the refrigerant circulating in the air conditioning system.

Repair car air conditioning compressor Ford Focus 2

In general, the principle of operation of a car air conditioner is similar to the operation of a conventional refrigerator.
Freon mixed with oil circulates through the system components. Oil serves to lubricate moving parts, freon is a refrigerant. First, a high-pressure compressor compresses the gas into a liquid. It is then distilled into a condenser, where it is cooled to zero temperature. The next item is the receiver-dryer. This tank contains a special moisture-retaining substance that cleans freon from excess moisture. After this, the refrigerant ends up in the expansion tube, where the pressure drops sharply and the freon returns to a gaseous state. The cooled gas moves to the evaporator, behind which a fan is located. The air is cooled by passing through freon. Finally, the refrigerant returns to the compressor where it becomes a liquid again and the cycle repeats. How do you know if your car compressor needs repair?

The air conditioner in the car does not work if:

  • The cooling system supplies not only cold

    air, but also such signs of life as noise and knocking in the compressor area;

  • the smell in the cabin leaves much to be desired;
  • the supply of cold air treacherously stopped;
  • The car still cools, but not all the time.

All this means that the car compressor is not pumping or there is some other problem in the system.

As a rule, problems with the operation of the air conditioner are caused by its depressurization. This can happen if the refrigerant was not charged in a vacuum. Because of this, water or air gets inside, which has an equally bad effect on the operation of the device.

An unpleasant odor is created by colonies of microorganisms and mold, which happily multiply in the evaporator. This dark and damp place provides them with ideal conditions. Such an undesirable neighborhood, in addition to simple discomfort, leads to a variety of diseases.

The design feature of a car air conditioner is that it receives energy for operation not from a dedicated motor, but from the engine. In order for the mechanism to be turned on and off independently, there is a magnetic coupling. It is not a direct part of the cooling system, but plays an important role in it. Often problems of insufficient air cooling or compressor failure are associated with it. The condition of this part must be carefully monitored, since the price of a Ford Focus 2 coupling, for example, starts at 19,000 rubles. In general, this applies to any part of the cooling system. Thus, professional flushing of a car’s air conditioner radiator will cost less than subsequent repairs of other spare parts if this has not been done.

Initial diagnostics of the condition of the vehicle's cooling system can be made without using an inspection hole and a lift. To do this you need:

  • visually assess the freon level in the system through the receiver window;
  • make sure that the radiator tubes are cold;
  • try to start the compressor by connecting it directly to the engine (if it starts, the problem is on the clutch side);
  • check for oil stains on parts of the mechanism.

Car repair shops have several standard procedures for repairing a car air conditioning compressor and other spare parts.

  1. Full

    disassembling the air conditioner and washing all parts. This is especially important if a part has been replaced. If this procedure was not carried out, debris from the old ones will get into the new part, and you will have to repair it again.

  2. Diagnosis and elimination of freon leaks using special devices.
  3. Refrigerant charging with preliminary vacuumization of the system.

A guarantee is also provided for the work performed.

In order to encounter a lack of cold air in the cabin as little as possible, try to follow a few simple rules:

  • do not turn on the air conditioner as soon as you start the car;
  • do not trust refilling freon to unqualified technicians;
  • do not forget about disinfecting the system with special means.

And the situation when the air conditioning on a Ford Focus 2 car does not turn on will happen quite rarely.

What can fail in a car air conditioner?

Most often, the cause of failure of a car air conditioner is unfavorable operating conditions, since some parts of the system are constantly clogged with dirt, debris, poplar fluff, water and deicing agents get in. Basically, all the dirt accumulates in those places where it can linger, i.e. under the clamps, frame nuts, and fluff and dust fill the space between the radiator and the condenser, which leads to rapid failure of the latter. That is why it is recommended that when washing a car, do not forget about the radiator, condenser and the space between them .

The operation of the evaporator and condenser can be affected by the entry of water, air, lack or excess of refrigerant, and oil into the system. The reasons why the evaporator failed are: corrosion, both internal and external; its pollution; blockage of drainage pipes. The condition of the filter drier is affected by non-compliance with the rules and technologies for refilling, maintenance and repair of the air conditioning system and, as a result, its contamination. If there is a failure in the electrical part, or the bearing is worn out, this will lead to a malfunction of the fan.

REMOVAL OF THE AIR CONDITIONING COMPRESSOR

We remove the compressor for replacement if it fails. Before starting work, it is necessary to discharge the air conditioning system. The air conditioning system must be discharged or charged with refrigerant at specialized services for servicing air conditioning systems. If the air conditioning system is depressurized as a result of through corrosion or mechanical damage in its parts, in this case there is no need to discharge the system. We carry out the work on an inspection ditch or overpass. Disconnect the wire terminal from the negative terminal of the battery. Remove the air conditioning compressor drive belt (see “1.3.6. Ford Focus II. Checking the condition and replacing the auxiliary equipment and air conditioner drive belts. Replacing spark plugs”).

Repair of air conditioning compressor Ford Focus 2

Car air conditioning plays a big role in ensuring the comfort of a Ford Focus 2 car. This is especially true in the summer, when the temperature outside rises quite high and the car’s air conditioning system comes to the rescue, ensuring the optimal temperature level in the cabin.

In addition to creating a comfortable microclimate, the air conditioner is also responsible for purifying the air from odors and moisture.

The second generation Ford Focus air conditioner is a modern device consisting of many components and assemblies. The main parts that it consists of are a pressure reducing valve, a pressure valve, a throttle pipe, a receiver, a coupling, a heat exchanger, a radiator and a compressor.

The Ford Focus 2 air conditioning compressor is the most important part of the air conditioning system in a car, since it carries out the main functions that ensure the normal functioning of the entire system. In addition, the breakdown of this particular part is the most critical, since replacing it is an expensive task, and repairs require special knowledge and equipment, which is available only in specialized car services.

However, if malfunctions appear in the operation of the air conditioner or compressor, in particular, then it is necessary to quickly solve them; for this you need to know what signs in the operation of the air conditioner may indicate the presence of problems.

Compressor

If such repairs did not help, and computer diagnostics indicated the compressor, then most likely it will have to be replaced with a new one. You can do this yourself by purchasing a new compressor for the car air conditioning system. The problem is that a compressor for a car air conditioner is not cheap, and not every driver will agree to such expenses, so many come to such a solution as compressor repair. You can do this yourself or at a car service station.

Most often, the compressor fails due to the fact that the previous repair or refueling was of poor quality. The fact is that when a driver arrives at a car service station with a problem of refrigerant leakage or darkening of thermal insulation, the technicians simply refill the car's air conditioner and send the driver on his way. At this time, the driver is using a working system and does not even suspect that it will soon break down again.

It is necessary to save the air conditioning system at the moment when the tightness of the pipe system is broken. The fact is that at this moment moisture gets into the pipes, which negatively affects the air conditioning device in the cabin. In this situation, the compressor should be flushed.

Before you start cleaning the compressor, you need to prepare for two stages of the procedure. During the first stage, you need to drain the refrigerant from the compressor. After this, you need to rinse the compressor with special means until the liquid is clear after entering the compressor. The second step is to pour oil and cleaning fluid into the compressor and turn it on for ten minutes. After this, drain the liquid, and if the oil was of poor quality, then rinse the compressor again until the liquid is clear, just like the first time.

After cleaning the compressor, it must be refilled with oil. It should be taken into account that the oil that is poured into the air conditioning compressor has properties that absorb moisture. Therefore, when filling, it is necessary to minimize the contact of oil with the environment, and before pouring oil into the compressor, blow it with air.

Symptoms of a problem

The main signs that the air conditioning compressor needs repair:

  • noise, which, as the part wears out and depending on the severity of the problem, can be louder or quieter and can be heard both when the air conditioner is running and when the air conditioner is turned off;
  • play between gaskets on hoses or at the shaft seal;
  • leaking freon from certain places in the air conditioning system.

If you notice any of the signs of a malfunction in the air conditioning system, do not delay a visit to a car service, since over time these malfunctions will only become more critical and difficult to repair, and therefore more financially costly.

To avoid the problems described above, you need to understand the reasons for their occurrence.

Electrical faults

Electrical faults include damage to the electromagnetic coupling. It can be detected when the air conditioner is turned on: in the event of a breakdown, a click is not heard and the clutch does not press. Due to malfunctions of the clutch, torque from the engine is not supplied to the compressor. In this case, repair of the car air conditioning compressor begins with checking the presence of control power. If this is not the problem, then you should pay attention to the winding of the electromagnetic clutch. You need to inspect it for damage, make sure that the clutch does not short to ground.

Check the current it consumes. If one of the above problems is confirmed, it is recommended to change the winding. In cases where there is a gap in it and it is accessible, sometimes it is possible to eliminate it. The clutch could also fail due to overheating, which was caused by improper maintenance of the car air conditioner and its prolonged operation under increased load.

When repairing a car compressor that has an electromagnetic valve instead of an electromagnetic clutch, the algorithm for checking and identifying valve faults is almost the same. The only difference is that another cause of malfunction is added - contamination of the control hole.

In this case, repairing the car's air conditioning compressor comes down to removing it and cleaning the hole.

Causes of problems

The causes of problems in the operation of the air conditioning compressor are as follows:

  1. Most often, problems arise due to leaks in the system. In this case, the air conditioning on the Ford Focus 2 simply will not turn on. In order to make sure that the problem lies precisely in the lack of tightness, open the hood and press on the tube nipple. If during this action you notice a small flow of gas, then we can confidently say that the problem is a leak in the air conditioning system. Often, leaks occur due to insufficient lubrication, as this can cause rapid wear of individual parts that break down and thereby create a leaky environment in the system.
  2. The second common cause of problems in the operation of the air conditioning compressor is a critical level of contamination of the radiator. To avoid such a case, regularly carry out procedures to clean the radiator from dirt and other foreign objects.
  3. Another cause of failure may be a malfunction of the electronics. This usually occurs due to an electrical circuit break. For example, if the pressure sensor is not working, the clutch will also not work, which will affect the functioning of the entire air conditioner as a whole. In addition, the freon sensor may also turn off, which also makes the air conditioning system impossible to operate.

There are many more problems due to which the air conditioning compressor on FF2 may fail. Most often this happens after prolonged cold weather, so pay special attention to the operation of the air conditioner during this period and do not neglect a visit to a car service center for diagnostics. Thus, you can save a significant amount of money and time in the future with stable operation of your car’s air conditioning system.

DIY crafts for car enthusiasts

The question arose about the condition of the air conditioning system. I lost confidence in entrusting this matter to the craftsmen from the service center where I bought the car even during the first maintenance, and therefore I decided to check everything myself (fortunately I have experience).

As they say, done...

In order to check the pressure in the system, we need a metrological station (hereinafter referred to as a comb), hoses for connecting it and an auto adapter for connecting to the system (fortunately, this is now like dirt). And before refueling the freon itself is 134a. The complete set is pictured below.

When assembled it looks like this:

There is no point in connecting the high pressure line. Because for me, what will be there in this case does not matter (this is necessary when checking the filter, compressor, clogging of the evaporator). Now more details. The store sells freon in 1kg packaging. There are two types for the adapter, firmware or squeezing. I took it with the firmware (I like them more in terms of reliability than others).

We are preparing the balloon; its upper part has a thread and the place where the needle will pierce the firmware. Well, first of all, we connect the firmware to the hose and its other end to the comb to the central part...

Open the hood, remove the plug from the low pressure line, wipe it with a cloth and put on the auto adapter... The system is ready))))

According to the technology for refilling a car air conditioner with 134a freon, you need to start the engine, raise the speed to 1500, set the cooling knob to maximum, turn on air recirculation, and open the front windows. I raised the speed by placing a piece of wood under the slipper...

We look at the pressure in the low pressure circuit 0_0

230 kPa. This is not enough (((the system is assembled. Open the low-pressure screw, pick up the cylinder with the valve down (to fill the system not with vapor and liquid freon) and slowly open the tap on the firmware, thereby filling the system with freon (this is done with the engine running, fill slowly (through The fire on the comb can be seen as freon boils, which then enters the system.

According to the technology, the pressure on the low-pressure lines should not exceed 285 kPa. After 3-5 minutes I raised the pressure to 280 kPa, which is just right. The system operates at peak cooling capacity and the compressor operates in the desired mode. Close the screw on the cylinder and let the system operate for 7-10 minutes.

The pressure on the comb will jump up and down, well, we are interested in the peak of the jump of 280 kPa (if you are new to this, then when you do this, take 275 kPa as the standard). I was glad when a stream of water flowed from the drainage pipe without interruption))))

the system is operational and charged.

1 kg cylinder. Enough for at least 5-9 refills. PS If it is possible to vacuum the system, then fill it using the scales!

Repair of air conditioning compressor Ford Focus 2

The presence of malfunctions of such an air conditioning part as a compressor disables the entire air conditioning system, which is especially unpleasant in the summer, when the need for car air conditioning is most urgent, because it determines how comfortable the stay in the car will be for the driver and his passengers . If the air conditioning system fails, you should immediately contact a car service for repair work. Depending on the level of malfunctions, specialists will repair or replace the compressor. In any case, this procedure is preceded by a system diagnosis, which is designed to identify the problem and its source. The repair procedure itself is complicated not only by the presence of a large number of parts in the system, but also by the fact that the coolant contained in the air conditioner has toxic properties and any actions must be carried out extremely carefully and with all precautions.

When providing repair work, the technicians will dismantle the air conditioner and disassemble the compressor. This is done according to the following algorithm:

  • freon is released from the air conditioner;
  • then the central bolt is unscrewed and the upper part of the compressor is removed;
  • using a special press, the coupling is dismantled after removing the retaining ring and bearing;
  • then the bearing seat is lubricated with oil and a new part is installed.

Replacement of certain parts depends on the nature of the malfunction. After the specialists carry out repairs, flush the system and replace the necessary parts, the compressor is assembled in the reverse order.

After the steps described above, specialists will refill the air conditioner. Before this, a vacuum process occurs, which consists of removing all moisture and air from the air conditioning system using a special pump. If this action is not performed, the air conditioner and its individual parts will soon be subject to corrosion. When refilling the air conditioner, oil is often added to the freon.
