Battery fault
If starting the Chevrolet Cruze power plant has become impossible, first of all you need to pay attention to the voltage of the on-board network. You need to measure it on the battery. For these purposes, it is recommended to use a load fork.
The voltage drop is most pronounced in cold weather. The battery does not provide sufficient starting current, the starter does not turn, and the relay clicks. The electronic control unit monitors the voltage of the on-board network. As soon as its value falls below the threshold, the startup attempt is disabled. What complicates the situation is that in cold weather the engine oil becomes thicker and it is more difficult to turn the crankshaft. The combination of these factors leads to the fact that starting the engine becomes impossible.
To troubleshoot the problem, it is recommended to take the following actions:
- charge the battery;
- start the engine using a starter charger;
- To make starting easy in the morning, remove the battery and warm it in a warm room, or move the car to a heated garage.
Starting from another vehicle is not recommended, as there is a high risk of damage to the electronics.
Car alarm and inability to start the engine
The purpose of the alarm is to prevent unauthorized start of the power plant. For this purpose, protection is implemented both at the software level and at the physical level. As a result, the failure of any component of the security system makes it impossible to start the engine. There are also problems with the ignition switch.
The simplest way to diagnose a security system is to test run the power plant with the car alarm turned off.
Other problems and malfunctions
Some Orlando owners complain about the air conditioning system - the air recirculation damper is stuck in the closed position. Less common was climate freezing: the set temperature did not change when turning the control knob, or the temperature indication disappeared. The system's functionality was restored on its own after some time.
However, after 100-150 thousand km, it was still necessary to repair the broken plastic heater dampers. The cost of the repair kit is about 1000 rubles. However, to get to the heater, you must completely remove the front panel.
There were also cases of “error 95” (airbag malfunction) and failure of the parking sensor (from 200 rubles for an analogue).
With age, the heated driver's seat fails. A new original mat is available for 3,000 rubles.
After 100,000 km, the windshield wiper arm on the driver's side sometimes stopped moving. The reason is a broken joint. Fortunately, the defect can be easily fixed.
Ignition system
Poor fuel quality and failure to comply with maintenance schedules can lead to problems in igniting the fuel-air mixture. Most often one or more spark plugs fail. The car, as a rule, does not stop starting immediately. This is preceded by some symptoms:
- engine troits;
- starting becomes difficult;
- engine power decreases;
- fuel consumption increases;
- The Check Engine light comes on.
To diagnose spark plugs, it is recommended to unscrew them and visually inspect them. The presence of carbon deposits or mechanical damage indicates the need to install a new kit.

Fuel system
There are several weak points in the fuel system that can make the power plant unable to start. The reasons for their failure are most often associated with the use of low-grade fuel. Typical fuel system problems are shown in the table below.
Cause of malfunction | Manifestation |
Refueling with low-grade fuel | Almost immediately after visiting the gas station |
Fuel injectors | Starting becomes more difficult each time depending on the degree of clogging of the sprayer. |
Gasoline pump | Failure to start the engine is usually preceded by a situation where the car stalls while driving. |
Fuel filter | Clogging can occur either gradually or suddenly after refueling with low-grade fuel. |
To eliminate a malfunction in the fuel system, it is recommended to first check the condition of the fuel injectors. If diagnostics show a violation of the spray pattern, then ultrasonic cleaning is recommended.
It is also necessary to check the condition of the fuel pump and fuel filter. The Chevrolet Cruze does not have a special access hatch under the rear seats, so the gas tank will need to be removed. During this event, you can assess the condition of its internal walls and visually check the quality of the filled fuel.
Error 89 on Chevrolet
Chevrolet Cruze 1.8 MT LS › Logbook › Getting rid of error No. 89 (CODE 89)
The most common error is Code 89. Many people do not know what it is and how to deal with it. To be honest, I didn’t know it myself, and I encountered this problem after installing the LTZ tidy. When starting the car, when checking the instrument panel, the following message was displayed on the wide screen:
The old device didn’t even have this: After surfing the Internet a lot and reading a lot of reviews, everything came up with one thing. It's a thermostat! But why a thermostat? Everything works as normal, both the fan and the engine cooling. I took a chance on a replacement. A Luzar thermostat (Russian-made) was chosen; one thing prompted this: the time to receive the spare part was 1 day after ordering (you need to travel long distances). The thermostat is completely similar to the factory one and comes with a Luzar LT 0550 sealing ring. Next, we drain the antifreeze in any convenient way and dismantle the thermostat itself. In my case, the whole picture with error 89 immediately became clear, the sensor simply rotted.
Full sizeBefore removing the sensor connector
Full size Sensor and connector remain together
Full size Remains in thermostat
Full size Only the sensor failed, everything else is fine
Full sizeView of the sensor from the connector side
Full size The connector itself Before all work performed, it is necessary that the engine cools down. Otherwise, you may get burned by hot antifreeze. We install the Luzar thermostat and everything else. New antifreeze was added.
Now, when starting the engine and checking the tidy, no “Maintenance” is required. Code 89 is defeated. Let's see how long import substitution takes place
Good luck to everyone on the roads!
What about gearboxes?
The Chevrolet Orlando is equipped with an automatic transmission of the same series as the Cruze, only with a larger load - 6T40 instead of 6T30. The latter, by the way, was not very well tuned and was rather dull, but with frequent oil changes it lasted quite a long time and was considered a quite reliable gearbox. But for some reason its brother on the Orlando was distinguished by its tough operation and less reliability.
Even during the warranty period, they tried to cure the shocks in the first three gears during shifts by flashing the control unit, and if there was no result, they even changed the valve body. Recommendations for frequent oil changes have also not gone away - experts advise filling in new oil at least every 50,000 km.
The manual transmission, again, unlike the Cruze, does not cause any particular problems, as does the clutch mechanism

During this event, you can assess the condition of its internal walls and visually check the quality of the filled fuel.
Malfunction of fuel equipment
The lack of fuel, its insufficient amount in the tank causes difficulty starting the engine. The fuel pump cannot fully pump gasoline due to its low level. The possibility of spark plugs becoming clogged with fuel should not be ruled out.
Among motorists it is customary to say “the candles were thrown.” Lack of fine tuning of the power system leads to excessive fuel supply.
Step #1: Diagnostics begins with the exhaust pipe. A light blue smoke after several turns of the starter will indicate fuel entering the combustion chambers and ignition.
Step No. 2: turn out the spark plugs one by one, inspect the integrity of the electrode, base, and “filling” with fuel or oil. The presence of the latter will indicate a loss of tightness of the fuel injectors. High-voltage wires are also subject to inspection. Gusts, cracks, bends prevent a stable supply of voltage to the spark plugs.
Step No. 3: cleaning elements of fuel equipment. The Chevrolet Cruze 1.6 has two pre-installed filters: coarse and fine.
Due to clogging, the pump creates excess pressure for injection, which causes premature wear. Damage to the fuel line causes air to leak into the system. Characteristic signs of depressurization are the presence of gasoline leaks.
Other faults
Error code 89 Frequently encountered problems that prevent the engine from starting and methods for troubleshooting Chevrolet Cruze with 1.6 and 1.8 engines are summarized in the table below.
Malfunction | Description |
The gear selector is incorrectly installed | The ECU of cars with an automatic transmission controls the position of the gear selector lever. Starting is not possible if one of the movement options is selected. Moving the gearbox to the “P” position will eliminate the impossibility of starting. Cars with manual transmissions do not have this problem. |
Code 89 | In most cases, it reports a thermostat malfunction. Code 89 rarely becomes the reason for the inability to start the engine, but with a combination of other faults, it can prevent the car from starting. To fix the problem, you need to replace the thermostat. |
After washing the car stalled and would not start. Sometimes the engine seizes. | Dry the engine compartment. If necessary, replace the air filter. |
Hello! I have a 2013 Chevrolet Cruze. It gives an error: code 89. Help me figure out what this means! (Michael).
Mikhail, hello, we have analyzed your question and are ready to answer it.
Body and interior
The paintwork of the Chevrolet Orlando body is not particularly durable, which is traditional for modern cars - chips soon appear. Chrome also does not resist external influences for long: the radiator lining and the strip on the trunk door swell.
Sometimes the button to open the fifth door fails. Fogging of the front and rear optics occurs.
With frequent folding and unfolding, the side mirrors on several vehicles have become “freely aligned.” The reason is the deformation of the soft lock washer and the latch popping out.
“Drips” from the ceiling lamp in winter are not uncommon. This phenomenon is typical for many modern cars. The reason is the formation of condensation in the space between the roof and the ceiling upholstery. It is treated by gluing the roof with heat and sound insulating material.
The plastic of the Orlando interior is easily scratched and after a while begins to creak. A knocking noise in the rear may be caused by a loose spare wheel.
What does code 89 mean?
This error code can be called a disease for Chevrolet Cruze cars. Over the past few years, hundreds of motorists have encountered this problem. We have turned to an official source for help with your question. Here's what we learned: combination 89 means the need for vehicle maintenance. Regardless of the mileage on your car, unfavorable conditions for operating a Chevrolet Cruze may periodically arise. It is these conditions that cause the need for maintenance.
Red Chevrolet Cruze
Unfortunately, the manufacturer does not provide more specific information to solve this problem, and it is clear why. Who wants to lose extra money? Diagnostics from an official dealer costs about 600-800 rubles, and this is only the test itself, without solving the problem. Plus, you must come to the “official” with a burning “check” of the error. But in practice, code 89 tends to appear and disappear on the screen. Therefore, if you decide to be serviced by a dealer, then you need to go to him when the code is always on, without disappearing. Of course, this option is not the most acceptable, but, unfortunately, the Chevrolet concern has determined such a car diagnostic policy.
Everyone knows that service at the dealer in most cases costs a pretty penny. We can recommend another option: diagnose your vehicle yourself. To do this, you will need a laptop with the necessary software for this and a special adapter for testing. The laptop is connected via an adapter to the diagnostic connector (its location is indicated in the service manual), and the diagnostic procedure is launched on the computer. The program reads all fault codes and displays them on the screen. In this case, the codes will not be two-digit and can be deciphered using technical documentation. And based on the information received, it will be possible to draw some conclusions.
But keep in mind that in this case you can save money only if you do the diagnostics yourself. If you contact specialists at any service station, the cost of the inspection will cost approximately the same amount that you will need to pay to the dealer. Therefore, how to act in such a situation is up to you to decide.

When strange numbers or symbols appear on the Chevrolet Cruze instrument panel, this means an error due to a car malfunction, which is important to be able to decipher, reset and correct the condition of your vehicle. With each new version of the Chevrolet Cruze it becomes more and more difficult to read the codes, because... their number increases significantly. But let's look at how to behave in a situation where an error appears on the panel, how to clear the code yourself, when computer diagnostics of a car at a service station cannot be avoided, what PC programs will help you with self-diagnosis and a complete list of codes for the 2014 Chevrolet Cruze.
Causes
What do error codes 84 and 89 mean on a Chevrolet Cruze? The answer to this question is simple. These numbers mean the following:
- Code 84 – engine power reduced;
- Code 89 – scheduled maintenance has reached its due date.
Often, simultaneously with error 84, visible problems with the motor begin; there may be several reasons for this code. Below we'll take a closer look at why they appear. Be sure to conduct a detailed diagnosis. It often reveals additional errors that can be used to determine the malfunction more accurately. Code 89. This is perhaps one of the most harmless codes. This error occurs when it is necessary to undergo scheduled maintenance. This happens when a certain mileage is reached. Often this error can occur when the speedometer sensor malfunctions. In this case, be sure to check its condition. If everything is fine with it, visit the service. You can also replace parts that are time to replace yourself. Electronic control units of modern cars have diagnostic functions, which greatly simplifies life for drivers. If the ECU sees an error in the operation of the engine and other units, the driver is notified about this by the corresponding information on the multimedia system display. The Chevrolet Cruze also performs automatic diagnostics, capable of notifying the driver of various problems. Most often, owners of this car model have to deal with errors 84 and 89. They signal corresponding problems that need to be eliminated in order for the engine to operate in standard mode again.
Chevrolet Cruze: error code 84
Another common error that Chevrolet Cruze owners often encounter is 84. It less accurately tells the driver what work needs to be done to fix the problem. This error signals that the electronic control unit has reduced power in order to preserve engine elements. In other words, the car will begin to accelerate “stupidly” and spend more fuel if you ignore error 84 in the Chevrolet Cruze and continue to drive with it.
At the same time, there may be a lot of reasons why error code 84 appears on the Chevrolet Cruze. The following are the most common:
- Problems with the throttle valve. Chevrolet Cruze vehicles are equipped with electronic throttle. The following problems most often arise with it:
- Blockage. The standard “disease” of all chokes is a blockage that prevents the damper from completely closing. Since the ECU controls the position of the throttle valve, it indicates to the driver with error 84 that it is not closing completely. In such a situation, you will need to clean the throttle valve;
- Erase a contact.
Under the throttle cover there are contacts and tracks - 4 pieces each. A common problem is the center contact rubbing off. Due to the fact that the contact does not reach the track, malfunctions occur in the throttle, which are detected by the ECU. To correct the situation, you need to press the contact in the track using tweezers. But this solution can be called rather temporary, and if such a situation arises, a complete replacement of the throttle will be required. Please note: In rare cases, error 84 occurs due to the accelerator pedal, which has the same electronic unit as the throttle, and a similar “disease” of erasing the central contact. - Low coolant. Perhaps the simplest reason for error 84 in the Chevrolet Cruze. If the pipes through which the coolant passes overheat, the ECU will know about this and notify the driver with code 84. In such a situation, it is enough to add coolant to the tank;
- Problems with the electronic control unit.
It is possible that error 84 in the Chevrolet Cruze arose due to problems with the unit itself, or rather with its contacts. It is recommended to clean oxidized contacts, especially 42, 43, 44, 45 and 46; most often, oxides on these five contacts can lead to error 84.

Battery fault
If starting the Chevrolet Cruze power plant has become impossible, first of all you need to pay attention to the voltage of the on-board network. You need to measure it on the battery. For these purposes, it is recommended to use a load fork.

Starting from another vehicle is not recommended, as there is a high risk of damage to the electronics.
Car alarm and inability to start the engine
The purpose of the alarm is to prevent unauthorized start of the power plant. For this purpose, protection is implemented both at the software level and at the physical level. As a result, the failure of any component of the security system makes it impossible to start the engine. There are also problems with the ignition switch.
The simplest way to diagnose a security system is to test run the power plant with the car alarm turned off.
Engine
For Russian buyers, only one power unit was offered - a 4-cylinder naturally aspirated gasoline engine with a displacement of 1.8 liters, developing 141 hp.
The timing drive is belt. The first belt replacement is prescribed after 150,000 km or 10 years. A new timing drive kit is available for 5-8 thousand rubles.
At first, some owners encountered a “leaking” oil pressure sensor (200 rubles). In addition, the oil pressure sensor sometimes gave a signal about a drop in pressure in the lubrication system. As a rule, this event was associated with a leakage of the sensor itself. It is noteworthy that a couple of cases of spontaneous combustion in the engine compartment were recorded. Presumably, the culprit of the incident was a “poisoning” sensor. The leaked oil ignited. In any case, this was the verdict made by representatives of the authorized Chevrolet service center.
Over time, the thermostat also began to leak. Replacing the gasket did not always solve the problem. Sometimes the housing needed to be replaced (4,000 rubles). In addition, the thermostat heating element or coolant temperature sensor could have failed. Antifreeze leaks also occurred due to a crack in the expansion tank.
After 100-150 thousand km, the heat exchanger gaskets gave out, as a result, oil either got into the cooling system or was squeezed out. The cost of troubleshooting will be about 14,000 rubles, since the unit is located in a hard-to-reach place - under the exhaust manifold.
The owners also had to replace a failed ignition module (4-8 thousand rubles).
Some Chevrolet Orlando owners noted non-standard behavior of engine speed when warming up: they floated and did not fall evenly, as is customary. But this is just a specific feature of this motor and does not mean it is malfunctioning.
Sometimes there was a “glitch” of the fuel level indicator (or sensor). The readings were reset to zero, despite the presence of gasoline in the tank. After a short time or turning off the ignition, the correct display resumed.
Ignition system
Poor fuel quality and failure to comply with maintenance schedules can lead to problems in igniting the fuel-air mixture. Most often one or more spark plugs fail. The car, as a rule, does not stop starting immediately. This is preceded by some symptoms:
- the engine is shaking,
- starting becomes difficult
- engine power decreases,
- fuel consumption increases,
- The Check Engine light comes on.
The emergence of Check Engine
To diagnose spark plugs, it is recommended to unscrew them and visually inspect them. The presence of carbon deposits or mechanical damage indicates the need to install a new kit.
Poor condition of spark plugs
