Disc sizes
At the factory, the VAZ 2109 is equipped with wheels with dimensions 175/70 R13. Unfortunately, they don't look very attractive. They need to wear rubber with a large profile. Rims with a small diameter are practically invisible behind such a tire.
To solve this problem, you should first find out which larger wheels can be installed on the VAZ 2109, because today there is a very large assortment of models on the market with sizes R14 - R15.
If such a rim is installed on a car, will its technical characteristics be maintained? Is it possible to pass inspection on such wheels?
R14 wheels can be mounted on the following models:
- 2109,
- 2108,
- 21099,
- 2114,
- 2115.
On all vehicles, the wheel width should not exceed 6 inches. In this case, the offset should be within 35-40 millimeters.
It is allowed to install cast products, as well as forged structures, with the above parameters. The center hole of the discs must be greater than or equal to 58.5 millimeters.
For such models, you will have to specially select tires so that after installation there is no change in the diameter of the wheel. Otherwise, when the car starts to turn, the tire may touch suspension parts, possibly touching the fender liners.
Experts advise installing tires with the following dimensions on R14 wheels:
- 175/65 R14,
- 185/60 R14.
The final option is considered more preferable.
Advantages and disadvantages of alloy wheels
Spectacular wheels decorate the traditional “nine”
The main advantage of alloy wheels is their weight. It is significantly lower than, for example, steel ones, and this affects the reduction of unsprung mass and inertia. That is, they will return to their place in the tires faster if the car hits an uneven road surface.
This will affect both the car's handling and steering control, which is generally insignificant, but saves fuel. With all this, alloy wheels look very aesthetically pleasing, because they not only have the right size, but, unlike their analogues, they are distinguished by a greater variety.
The disadvantages of cast wheels include the fact that the material from which they are made, although hard, is still fragile. Therefore, if, for example, the pressure in the tires deviates from the norm, the car skids and an impact occurs; the rims will not bend, but may crack or even break apart if the impact was quite strong. Accordingly, repairing such damage will be difficult.
Diameter calculation
In principle, each driver can calculate the wheel diameter independently. To do this, he must be well able to decipher the existing tire markings, for example, let’s calculate a wheel with dimensions 175/70 R13 for a nine:
- 175 – tire width indicator (mm).
- 70 – tread height size. Takes a percentage of the existing width. In this example: 175x0.7 = 122.5 mm.
- R13 – disk diameter. Calculated: 13 x 25.4 = 330 millimeters.
To obtain the wheel diameter, it is necessary to add the disk diameter with the profile height multiplied by two:
330 + 122.5 x 2 = 575 mm.
If you carry out calculations for other wheels, you get:
- 175/65 R14 – 583,
- 185/60 R14 – 577 mm.
The last option is considered the most optimal. The tire is ten millimeters wider. The contact patch of such rubber is much larger, which means the braking distance will be reduced.
The car will be more stable and much easier to drive. The rubber will not break when turning at high speed.
However, with all the positive aspects, there are also several disadvantages. A wide tire has a hydroplaning effect when driving at high speed. There is no such effect on narrow tires.
The cabin will feel shocks from hitting potholes due to the low profile height. Recommended wheel dimensions must be indicated in the technical documentation of the vehicle.
Information on wheel bolt patterns on domestic VAZ vehicles
How to determine wheel rim bolt pattern, compatibility table
All VAZ cars from the very foundation of the plant to the present day had only 3 main types of bolt patterns, since most modifications were made on a single platform, only their appearance changed. The bolt pattern for most Lada models looked like this:
The smallest representative of the automaker - VAZ 1111, popularly called "Oka", was produced in the Russian Federation for 20 years - from 1987 to 2008. Considering that the weight of this especially small class car was only 975 kg, and the load on the wheel was less than 250 kg, Oka became one of the few representatives in its class for which a bolt pattern of 3 studs was used.
It was quite problematic to find a similar wheel size on the market, so stamped products with a radius of R12 and R13 were often re-drilled in order to successfully fit on the hub.

The vast majority of models of the AvtoVAZ concern, starting from 2101 and ending with the Lada Priora or Kalina, were produced from the assembly line in the form of sedans, liftbacks, hatchbacks or station wagons of the compact or subcompact class.
Starting from 1966, when the concern released its first “penny”, and ending in 2020, the wheel bolt pattern for these cars was 4x98 mm, the diameter of the central hole was 58.1 mm.
The most popular Lada models today, for which wheels with a 4x98 bolt pattern are still sold, are VAZ 2106, 2107, 2109, 2110, 2112, 2114.
The latest VAZ models, such as Vesta, Granta and X-Ray, produced since 2020, have a wheel pattern as close as possible to the international standard for compact cars. This parameter on the specified modifications is 4x100.
Among all the products of the AvtoVAZ concern, such models as the VAZ 2121, or the classic Niva and all derivatives of this SUV have always stood out: the 5-door Taiga, Chevrolet Niva and other models. Due to increased loads on the hubs and wheels due to unsatisfactory road conditions, for which all parameters of the Niva were designed, these compact all-terrain vehicles traditionally had a disc bolt pattern of 5x139.7, with a central hole diameter of 98.5 mm.
These increased indicators allowed the wheel to freely resist bending moment, absorb large loads when the center of gravity is shifted to one side when moving on an inclined plane or when the wheels are forced to hang, and also allowed the car to transmit more torque to the tire treads when driving uphill without the risk of breaking parts .

Large disc elements
Larger wheels (15 inches) can be installed on the Samara. However, the manufacturer does not recommend doing this, so problems may occur during technical inspection.
The 185/55 R15 tire fits these wheels. Of course, you can try to install 195/50 R15. Before installation, be sure to take all measurements. It is possible that the wheel will begin to “rub”, since the width of the rubber is too wide.
The installation of a non-standard wheel rim must take into account the driving style of the car. For example, fans of fast driving can be advised to install durable and at the same time light wheels on the “nine”, since heavy ones will not allow them to develop good speed.
Car enthusiasts with little money don’t really need expensive alloy rims. To make your car look attractive, it is enough to install beautiful hubcaps, the cost of which is affordable for every motorist.

Interior of rims for VAZ cars
The bolt pattern of VAZ wheel rims is a very important indicator of the model, which significantly limits the range of products offered for sale. If the driver suddenly takes a fancy to a disc that has different characteristics, he will have to completely change the design of the hub and install the studs in a new order. Experts say that such a practice is fraught with unpredictable consequences during the operation of the vehicle.

Parameters of alloy wheels
PCD (Pitch Circle Diameter) diameter and the number of these holes.
For example, PCD100/4 - 4 holes with a diameter of 100 mm.
Since the mounting holes are made with a significant tolerance plus in diameter, you can make a mistake in choosing a PCD if it differs from the standard one by a couple of millimeters. For example, a PCD98/4 wheel is often put on a hub with PCD100/4 (98 mm from 100 cannot be distinguished by eye). It is unacceptable. In this case, of all the nuts (or bolts), only one will be fully tightened; the remaining holes will “lead away” and the fasteners will remain untightened or tightened skewed - the fit of the wheel on the hub will be incomplete. While driving, such a wheel will “beat”, in addition, not fully tightened nuts will unscrew by themselves.
Determining PCD by distance between bolt holes
DIA - diameter of the central hole for the hub or the central hole of the disk
ET - offset (or offset) of the disk (measured in mm).
This is the distance between the longitudinal plane of symmetry of the disk and the plane of the hub. The offset can be zero (the plane of symmetry of the disk coincides with the plane of the machine hub), positive (the plane of symmetry of the disk is closer to the center of the machine than the plane of the hub - as in the figure) and negative (further). For each car model, the offset is calculated by the manufacturer to ensure optimal stability and controllability of the car, as well as the least load on the hub bearings. The Germans designate the offset ET (for example, ET30 (mm), if its value is positive, or ET-30, if negative), the French - DEPORT, manufacturers from other countries usually use the English OFFSET. The desire to install wider low-profile tires that have appeared in recent years (sometimes on larger R-size wheels) leads to the need to select a wheel with a reduced ET (i.e. the tire has become wider - you need to move it outward from the body - otherwise it will start to touch it ) . Reducing ET makes the wheel track wider; - this increases the stability of the car and gives it a stylish racing look. An excessive decrease in ET is undesirable, because may result in increased load on the wheel bearings. Increase the reach, i.e. It is usually impossible to narrow the track - the disc will rest against the brake caliper.
