Making and installing garage doors with your own hands

What types of garages are there?

There are several types of garages, which differ greatly in the level of security. The main role here is played by the material from which the room is made.

Most often you can find the following types of garage:

  • Monolithic reinforced concrete. This is the most durable structure of this type. It is almost impossible to get inside such a room without special equipment quietly and quickly. Such structures are produced in industrial conditions and sold ready-made. Quite often they don't even require additional assembly. Representatives of the manufacturer simply deliver this structure to the customer and install it on a pre-prepared site. This can be either a separate room or an extension to the house. At the customer's request, such a box can have completely different sizes.
  • Brick. This is also a fairly reliable structure, but brick walls are still somewhat easier to break through than a wall made of monolithic reinforced concrete. Quite often, to enter such premises, burglars choose the roof and floor slabs, the integrity of which can be damaged using a simple jack.
  • Metal. As experts note, these are the most vulnerable buildings. Sectional and prefabricated structures will be especially problematic in terms of safety. A metal garage that has no floor and is not secured by anything can be opened by even a simple hooligan using a jack. In extreme cases, you can get inside even with the help of a small tunnel.

No. 4. Alarm system for apartments and houses

Alarms are usually installed as a complement to other security systems. This is one of the best ways to ensure the integrity of your home, but not everything is so simple here, because the alarm must be smart and reliable enough so that an attacker does not know how to disable it.

Experts advise using entire alarm systems and not limiting yourself to just the sensor on the front door. To protect your home to the fullest, it is better to install lock and door burglary detectors , glass break detectors and motion sensors. Place them on windows, doors, grilles, walls and furniture.

Sensors detect movement or intrusion into the home in different ways and are divided into infrared, microwave, seismic, acoustic, television and complex. The latter, of course, are the best.

When triggered, the alarm can make a loud sound , scaring away thieves and drawing attention to the apartment - this is the simplest option. alarm systems , when the apartment owner receives an alert on the phone, but the best and at the same time the most expensive alarm option is a remote alarm , when the signal goes to a private or public security company. In this case, its employees arrive on site within a few minutes. You will have to pay for such an alarm not only upon installation, but also every month to pay for security services class=”aligncenter” width=”620″ height=”388″[/img]

How can security measures be strengthened?

Having purchased a garage, the owner begins to think about how to protect his garage from being opened. There is quite a wide variety of modern devices for this, and they are being improved all the time.

Gate protection methods

No matter how fragile the walls are, burglars will first try to get inside the garage through the gate, which means they need to be protected most reliably. In places where lighting is poor and often completely deserted, burglars may resort to simply tearing down the gate. The criminals attach cables to the gates and use another vehicle to tear them down.

Hinge protection

To avoid such a development of events, you need to make sure that the gate leaves from the outside are absolutely smooth without gaps or cracks.

Hacking is often done using a crowbar or squeezing method. A crowbar is inserted between the swing gate leaves, and this can be counteracted by welding an additional strip of metal.

The gate itself must be welded from iron with a thickness of at least 3 mm, and it is recommended to make the frame and all other frames from channels No. 6. The gate frame should be very firmly attached to the walls of the garage. It is important to install additional stiffening ribs on the reverse side of the gate leaves.

In addition to the gate design itself, locks and hinges will be quite important for security.

  1. Loops. The first thing you should pay attention to is the most reliable hinges. They can also be further strengthened. This can be done by welding the bolts. Such actions will help make hacking somewhat more difficult, but they will not be able to completely secure the car. Burglars can saw off the bolt heads with a grinder or knock them off with a chisel. The most reliable option is to install internal hinges, which are similar in design to car hinges. Unfortunately, this is a rather labor-intensive process.
  2. Locks. Picking a lock is the most common way to enter a garage, which means that maximum attention should be paid to this moment. The lock is installed on an additionally welded plate with a thickness of approximately 2.5 mm. or directly onto the frame of the gate leaf. If the lock is padlocked, then it is best to install a special casing around it. This will not be a panacea, but it will still make the attacker's task much more difficult. Experts recommend mortise locks, but warn against locks that can be opened from inside without a key. When choosing a lock, you need to follow some rules:
  • The lock's security class is not lower than 3.
  • The material from which the lock is made is steel with a thickness of 3 mm.
  • Locks and keys must be numbered. This indicates their uniqueness.

All fastenings for locks must be as strong as possible.

It is highly advisable to install several locks at once. This is best done at a distance of 30 cm. If funds allow, you can equip the door with locks that open only synchronously, otherwise they block each other, or with locks with an alarm that triggers vibration. When installing several locks, you should not be too zealous, since the weather can be different and in winter a situation may arise when the owner will not be able to open all the locks either.

Additional protection measures

In addition to the gate, as mentioned earlier, the floor and ceiling of the garage can become vulnerable places. Here, too, it is very important to take additional protective measures.

To prevent undermining, it is important for the garage owner to concrete the floor using reinforcement. It is very important to make steel lathing on the floor and ceiling, which will reliably fasten the walls, floor and ceiling slabs. There are a lot of ways to strengthen the floor and walls, everything will depend on the financial capabilities of the owner.

Electronic methods of protection

Today, the most effective way to protect against burglary is to install an electronic alarm system. Modern technologies allow you not to bother with pulling wires, but to use special radio channels. Private security will quickly install such an alarm and if the slightest suspicion arises, an armed squad will arrive at the garage within a few minutes. The attackers will be detained and taken to the police. The owner will receive a notification of a hacking attempt by phone or SMS.

Tips from garage owners

Many car enthusiasts who are faced with the problem of garage break-ins give the following advice:

  • Before purchasing a garage space, get to know the area - find out how quiet the area is, how often other owners visit the garages. Check the light level. If in doubt, it is better to take a closer look at other offers.
  • Try to connect the walls of your garage with the walls of your neighbors.
  • Install the Howler system in your garage, which will definitely attract the attention of other drivers and scare away burglars.
  • The most effective way is to place your garage in a well-guarded area.

First line of defense

An ordinary key hatch that opens a garage door can be opened quite simply:

  • gets hacked;
  • breaks;
  • gets out;
  • breaks out;
  • cut out;
  • drilled, etc.

Often, many drivers think that by purchasing a garage, they have secured their car, but this is not so. The most attractive locks for thieves are those with a Soviet deadbolt lock. An attacker will recognize it immediately by its small hole. In this case, the hacking occurs very quickly, thanks to a special metal spoke, which he inserts into the hole and with a slight movement breaks it open in a few seconds. A hatch opens, behind which there are often 2 pins; they can also be easily removed and the gate is open.

Deadbolt lock

Naturally, the first thing to do to protect yourself from such problems is to change the deadbolt lock to a more modern one. Also, at the same time, it is necessary to weld 2 lugs on the inside of the door so that it is possible to additionally hang a padlock.

There is no trick against scrap. Often, attackers use simple but effective tools to open a lock.

Welded corners

Most often, the gate is opened with the most ordinary crowbar. This is done very simply, especially if there is even a small door gap, which eventually forms on gates of any quality of metal. It may lead to loops or the target will appear for another reason, but the essence is that a crowbar is inserted into it and the lock begins to break out. Cheap locks almost instantly cannot withstand such pressure, so it is best not to save money.

To protect yourself from such actions, a corner is welded onto the second door of the gate in such a way that a burglar will not be able to insert a crowbar, even into the existing gap.

Welded corners

Additional lock on the hatch

To prevent the possibility of tearing out, drilling or simply knocking out the hatch, an additional lock is installed on it, which protects it, but it is enough to simply knock it down with an ordinary sledgehammer, therefore the padlock on the hatch must also be protected. To do this, metal plates are welded on top and on the sides so that the thief cannot swing and knock him down.

Some car owners protect the door hatch with two padlocks that cover it with a plate.

Additional lock

If an attacker sees that the lock is strong enough, then he does not need to break it and simply cuts off the hinges. His goal is to get inside, and how this is done makes no difference.

To protect your garage from this type of burglary, you need to weld the corners on the sides of the hinges.

Loops

Some attackers don't bother at all about how to get in, and if all previous defense methods have been taken into account, then they simply cut out their entrance, opening it like a tin can.

There are known cases when a tire from a Ural chainsaw was taken, sharpened strongly and then simply crashed into a gate, opening a metal door like opening a tin can. Even 3 mm metal cannot resist such an onslaught.

What threatens garage burglars?

Every sane person understands that breaking into a garage is a crime, which means there is a penalty for it. If property was stolen from the garage, then according to our legislation, administrative liability is completely excluded, and this is regardless of the amount for which the property was stolen. This is regulated by Article 158 Part 2 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. Depending on the severity of the crime, burglars may face:

  • Penalties from 200,000 rubles or the amount of earnings for 18 months.
  • 480 hours of forced labor.
  • Up to 2 years of correctional labor.
  • Up to 5 years of work, often with restriction of freedom for up to one year.
  • Up to 5 years of imprisonment.
  • Up to 10 years if the damage was caused on a particularly large scale.

When determining the punishment, the court takes into account the severity of the crime and all additional circumstances of the case. The terms of imprisonment can be either with restriction of freedom or in the form of a suspended sentence.

The procedure for a garage owner after detecting a break-in

If you suddenly discover that there are signs of forced entry on your garage door, you should immediately contact the police and call their employees. The arriving squad is obliged to record the incident based on the existing signs of a break-in and file a report based on this. The victim will need to write a statement to law enforcement agencies. Our legislation does not impose any specific requirements for the execution of the document, but it must contain the following information:

  • It will need to be formalized in writing, where the full name, place of residence, and contact information will be indicated.
  • Describe the incident itself - where and when it happened.
  • Indicate all available data on the vehicle, especially noting its special features - tuning, dents, scratches, etc.
  • List the damage caused as accurately as possible.
  • Note the last time you saw your property and when you discovered it was missing.

A burglary case will be initiated only if there is such a report or based on your application. This moment is worth monitoring, otherwise you may waste precious time.

It is very important not to touch anything at the crime scene, as there is a possibility of inadvertently destroying evidence.

If there is any information about burglars, or at least suspicions, they should also be reported to the police immediately.

Protecting the premises from intrusion

At home, you need to find all available documents that can confirm the damage caused. This will be necessary for the trial and for imposing a penalty.

The procedure for bringing criminals to justice

Once an incident report has been filed or if the victim has filed a report, a criminal case must be opened. Unfortunately, it may happen that the case is not opened immediately, but a preliminary inspection is ordered. This procedure can take from 3 to 10 days. Sometimes, after such a check, the police refuse to initiate a case due to the lack of evidence of a crime.

If you receive a refusal, but do not agree with this decision, you must contact the prosecutor's office. The prosecutor will return the available documents to the police and order a more thorough review of the circumstances of the case. In addition, the victim has the right to file complaints with the prosecutor’s office both about the investigation process and about certain procedural issues.

No. 8. Simulation of house lighting

Experienced thieves watch the apartment for a long time to make sure that the owners are away. If there are no lights on in the apartment in the evenings, and the press is gathered in the box, then this is a sure sign to take action. Correspondence can be assigned to trusted neighbors to pick up. They can sometimes enter the apartment to water the flowers, and by opening the door, they will allow you to get rid of the so-called marks that thieves leave.

With lighting everything is much more complicated. The simplest option is to leave a light bulb on in one of the rooms, but it’s much better to invest in a smart system with a timer. It will allow you to alternately turn on the lighting in different rooms at nightfall, thereby simulating the real movements of household members.
