The 4th generation HBO was perfect in almost everything, it worked flawlessly. However, with the release of new equipment, the opinion of vehicle owners immediately changed.
The main impetus for the production of 5th generation LPG was the rapid development of the automotive industry. The fourth myth: about gas consumption.
There is an opinion that on the 5th generation LPG, gas consumption is equal to gasoline consumption. So - this is not so.
There are unscrupulous installers who tell false stories about 1:1 consumption when driving on propane-butane. IT IS NOT TRUE. GAS CONSUMPTION WILL ALWAYS BE +10-15% HIGHER THAN GASOLINE AT STANDARD POWER AND FUEL CORRECTIONS.
If your consumption is 1:1, this means that either your gas system is faulty (incorrectly configured, the mixture is lean), or your gasoline system, or both are faulty. If you continue to drive like this, you will subsequently spend all the “additional savings” on engine repairs.
The thermal load on engine parts (valves, seats) remains within the gasoline range (that is, harmless) with only a slight excess. This applies to both 4th and 5th generation systems. This is physics and there is no escaping it, no matter how modern your gas system is.

Gas injectors are necessary to inject fuel into the combustion chambers. They are connected to an evaporator reducer. The entire system is controlled using electronic components - an ECU, which operates thanks to a microprocessor. It contains firmware that ensures operation according to a pre-designed algorithm. 4th generation gas equipment has an advantage over earlier ones - fuel selection occurs automatically, without driver intervention. To do this, all you need to do is set the gas-gasoline switch to the first position.
Disadvantages of gas equipment
- The main disadvantage of gas equipment for a car (5th generation) is the fuel pump. Unfortunately, it fails very quickly, but not because this part is produced poorly. The main reason lies in the impurities contained in the gas.

Installation of 5th generation gas equipment
Gas equipment is divided into five generations; let’s consider installing the latest one.
Naturally, the best option is to purchase a vehicle with factory equipment already installed. Based on this, we can safely say that this device, which came out of the factory complete with the machine, can significantly reduce the financial costs of registration. The degree of quality assurance also increases. But if you decide to perform the installation yourself, you can use the following rules:
- First you should open the hood and find the place that will be intended for the gearbox. During the selection process, you should remember that it should be mounted exclusively on the main frame of the vehicle. The hoses are laid very carefully, avoiding kinks. After the gearbox is already attached, you can begin connecting the antifreeze hoses. This should be done through a special tee, which will be located parallel to the system.
- Next, you can begin installing the gas cylinder itself. Installation is carried out in such a way that the tubes intended for filling and supplying gas are in the correct location. After this, you can safely supply gas to the manifold, make the necessary connections, and install injectors.
- Finally, the entire electrical part should be connected. At this point you can check the operation of the installed system and start the engine.
Design and operating principle
The design of the 5th generation HBO is quite interesting. In order to supply gas in a liquid state, the design had to include a high-pressure pump to supply liquefied gas.
To reduce the total number of equipment elements, the high-pressure pump was placed directly in the gas cylinder.
And so that it does not fail due to mechanical impurities present in the gas, an adapter with a ceramic filter installed in it is used on the universal filling device when refueling.
As before, gas is supplied from the cylinder, but under high pressure, through pipelines into the engine compartment.
The material used to make these lines was also replaced; if previously copper pipelines were used, now two single lines made of synthetic fiber go from the tank.
One of the lines supplies gas to the engine compartment, the second ensures the return of unused gas back to the tank, the so-called “return”.
Since the gas is supplied in a liquid state, an evaporator reducer is no longer needed in such equipment. But you still need to regulate the pressure and distribute the gas, and these functions in the 5th generation gas equipment are assigned to a valve block with a pressure regulator.
The final element of the mechanical component of the 5th generation gas equipment is the nozzles installed in the intake manifold, which dose and supply the gas, still in a liquid state, into the combustion chambers.
Moreover, the location of the nozzles has a strictly defined position to ensure the exact direction of the supplied gas stream into the manifold.
The electronic component, consisting of an electronic control unit, is responsible for the proper functioning of all elements of equipment.
It connects to the control unit of the standard power supply system and converts the signals coming from it for the correct operation of the equipment.
As a result, it turns out that the main task for the required functioning of the gas equipment lies with the standard power system of the car.

Principle of operation.
It's pretty simple. The high pressure pump supplies gas in liquid form to the valve block. There the pressure is regulated and distributed along the channels leading to the nozzles.
The electronic unit of gas equipment receives a signal from the standard unit and transmits it to the injectors. This signal regulates the opening time of the nozzle to supply gas to the manifold. And since the gas is liquid, its dosage is more accurate.
How is it different from its predecessor?
It is quite logical to study the differences between 5th generation gas equipment and 4th generation gas equipment.
As you already understand, taking into account the design changes, the operating principle of the new 5th generation LPG is somewhat different. The differences turned out to be truly significant.
Several basic arguments can be made to prove that the difference between the 4th and 5th generation HBOs is really greater than when comparing the same 4th and 3rd generation systems.
- Control block. Let's start with almost the main difference between the 5th and 4th generation HBO. The predecessor used a pulse injection system, which operated through a separate control unit. Now gas equipment is simply connected to the standard system. A high-voltage cable is used to exchange information.
- Ramp with nozzles. Their operating mode remains unchanged regardless of what fuel is used, gas or gasoline. This allows the driver not to feel the difference in the operation of the internal combustion engine.
- The new operating scheme of HBO, already in its 5th generation, provides for the possibility of connecting to the OBD system, which was not provided for by its predecessor.
- The engine does not flood the spark plugs and soot does not form on them. This helps to increase the service life of the elements.
- The engine switches to a gentle operating mode. This has a positive effect on the resource of the internal combustion engine.
- Calculation of fuel supply adjustments. In the new generation this is happening en masse. Because of this, the stability of operation does not depend on the ambient temperature and the characteristics of the gas mixture used.
- Gas circulation through the pipelines occurs constantly. It enters through one highway and exits through another. There is also a difference in the pipelines. The new ones have become more reliable and durable.
- Care. It became less necessary. In the new system, condensation does not form, and therefore there is no need to clean the gearbox and injector for preventive purposes. The only maintenance requirement is to replace the gas filter at the same time as changing the engine oil.
- There is no need to periodically clean gas lines. The contamination in the 4th generation was due to a reaction between the gas and the copper tube. The new lines are plastic, and no reactions occur. Oil fractions burn out while the engine is running. Any contaminants are retained by filters on the lines and in the pump.
- You can program an automatic transition from gas to gasoline, and from gasoline to gas under certain conditions.
- The predecessor's gas injectors coked quite quickly, which was due to the installation of equipment in the intake manifold. The new unit has a multi-point system and sequential injection, in which gas is injected simultaneously with a small volume of gasoline. Because of this, such an effect as coking is not observed.
All this indicates that the difference between the two generations is indeed significant. Their operation, design and operating principle are different. At the same time, the current 5th generation HBO has not only objective advantages, but also some disadvantages.
Advantages and disadvantages
To take an objective look at the 5th generation HBO and evaluate the system, it is worth considering not only its advantages, but also its existing disadvantages.
Let's start with the positive qualities.
- Having a gas pump provides an important advantage. It is included in the equipment package and is used to distill liquid gas through lines to the fuel rail. This allows you to constantly maintain the required pressure parameters in the system.
- Largely due to the fuel pump and stable pressure, engines converted to gas start up without problems in freezing conditions. These are important advantages characteristic of the current 5th generation HBO, which can turn a blind eye to the weaknesses and shortcomings of the system.
- There is no membrane in the system gearbox, which increases the service life of the element and improves fuel economy. The gearbox does not require warming up, which means you can immediately start the engine without fear of consequences.
- New gas-cylinder equipment performs well in extreme conditions and reduces the likelihood of engine overheating.
- The transition from gasoline to liquid gas does not affect power in any way. Under certain circumstances, it can even be increased slightly.
- With high-quality equipment and proper assembly, there are no unpleasant gas odors in the cabin.
- The consumption of liquid gas will be similar to the consumption of gasoline in terms of the amount of fuel. But gas is cheaper, which entails significant savings.
- The gas burns almost completely, the volume of harmful emissions is minimal.
But since the pros and cons are discussed here, in addition to the advantages, it is worth looking at the disadvantages characteristic of the current 5th generation HBO.
The disadvantages include several points.
- Increased demands on fuel quality. This point is considered the main drawback and the reason for the not so active distribution of HBO 5 in Russia as in other countries. Low-quality gas is characterized by a large number of impurities that are not removed during filtration.
- Gas pump. Its advantages and capabilities hide disadvantages. The reason again is the quality of the gas. Because of this, the pump can quickly fail. And this is the main part of the cost of the entire HBO set.
- Price. HBO 5 costs about 3 times more than its predecessor. The more cylinders, the more injectors required. This increases the price tag.
- Lack of specialists. The problem is gradually being solved, but so far there are not many craftsmen in Russia who have the required level of knowledge and qualifications.
- Independent installation and configuration is a difficult task and not recommended.
- In the case of HBO 5, it is impossible to use methane.
