Determining Rework Priorities
To increase the power of the VAZ 2109 carburetor engine, you will need to purchase a piston group, valves, camshaft, connecting rods and crankshaft. All these parts must be lightweight and manufactured by tuning manufacturers.

Head tuning
Tuning a cylinder head is actually assembling new parts onto old seats. So, a disassembled cylinder head is assembled from an old body and new tuning elements. There is nothing complicated in this process.
Assembly of the unit
After the main systems and components have been assembled, you can proceed directly to the process of assembling the engine together. So, in reverse order, the cylinder head, valve cover, pulleys, and timing belt are attached to the cylinder block.
After assembly, it is recommended to run the engine cold, but since not everyone has a running stand, most motorists carry out this operation hot, directly on the car.
Refinement of auxiliary systems
After the main components of the power unit have been assembled, you can begin installing auxiliary systems. So, first of all, we install the fuel injection system. An old Solex carburetor should not be installed, since it will not supply the required amount of fuel to the combustion chambers. Do not forget about the cooling system, since an increased number of crankshaft revolutions will speed up all processes, and accordingly increased heat emissions. Therefore, a kit cooling system is installed on the VAZ 2109, which includes: silicone pipes, a sports pump and a two-chamber thermostat. It is also recommended to install a sports radiator made of aluminum. This will lighten the weight of the car by several kilograms.

The diameter of the standard pipe in the injection-type VAZ 2108 engine system is 46 millimeters. To improve the supply of the fuel mixture to the cylinders during tuning, it is necessary to increase the throttle diameter by 5-8 millimeters. If you increase it to a larger size, there is a risk of damaging the throttle pipe. In addition, when installing a throttle valve with a larger diameter, you must ensure that there is a thermal gap between the pipe body and the valve. As the diameter increases, more air will enter the cylinders even when the unit is opened slightly.

DIY carburetor tuning

Note. The increase in power in this case is 12-15% more, which is very good. Do not forget that after this modernization you will no longer have to fill the tank with ordinary fuel, but with pure gasoline with an octane rating of AI95-98.

How to increase the engine power of a VAZ 2109 carburetor?
Some VAZ owners believe that an imported carburetor can significantly affect the increase in power of the VAZ 2109 engine. But comparative tests of the domestic DAAZ and the Italian Weber showed that there is no huge gap at all. In addition, the Weber consumes more fuel and has higher CO emissions at higher speeds.
The maximum speed is also higher with “our” Solex carburetor. If up to 80 km/h there is almost no difference, then above a hundred Weber immediately begins to lose ground. And his single-cameraness is to blame.
To change the power, the VAZ 2109 carburetor is tuned.
Let's consider the options (in this case for Solex):
- You can start modifying the accelerator pump.
- Replace the standard carburetor with another one that has more calibration data. Suitable, for example, from Niva.
- Take jets and tubes with a larger diameter cross section. But the main thing here is not to overdo it. Otherwise, the correct formation of the mixture will be disrupted and the engine will not start at all.

Modification Basics
The goal of any changes is to increase power and improve dynamic performance. The tuning unit becomes more durable. The concept of high-quality modernization includes the installation of updated elements:
- cylinder head;
- sports receiver;
- intercooler or turbine;
- camshaft;
- piston group.
In the process of working on the cylinder head, the shape and diameter of the intake valves and combustion chamber change. Often, the VAZ-2109 is equipped with spare parts from other cars, for example, an additional carburetor and manifold, which are taken from the Oka. Such a modification is not possible if your VAZ-2109 has an injection model of the power plant.
The carburetor VAZ-2109 models have only one advantage - the power unit is capable of running on low-octane gasoline. It is a little easier to repair than the injector. You should not radically change the power unit if you have a carburetor type - modify it rather than install a new injector. Such a change is very costly in terms of finances and does not justify itself. It is better to use other methods of modernization.
Methods for tuning the power unit
There are many ways to improve engine performance. Before work, keep in mind that in case of an error you will have to completely change the unit. Each method of changing motor characteristics has its own advantages and disadvantages. Here are a few relatively safe tuning methods:
- Installing a zero resistance filter. Craftsmen often call this component “zero”. If you choose the right filter, the dynamic performance and motor power will increase by 5%. If you equip your car with a zero drive, then you will have to carefully monitor it and clean it in a timely manner. Otherwise, installing the element will be pointless and dangerous. A dirty filter poses a risk of engine damage. Focus on a price of 5 to 6 thousand rubles per filter. Instances that cost less will not work normally.
- Together with injection power units, it is often recommended to use direct-flow mufflers. This part should only be used in the gas exhaust system if you have carried out a thorough modernization of the engine. Another option when such a muffler would be appropriate: if the car has a turbo air injection system (additional compressor). The straight-through muffler will only affect power in conjunction with other upgrades. In other cases, installing it is a pointless waste of money. It will make the car noisier and a roar will be heard when driving.
- Another effective way to increase engine power is to install a sports range on the gearbox. At the same time, a 6th gear will be added, and the car will accelerate more dynamically due to a change in a number of gear ratios. The overall engine power will not change, but the dynamic characteristics will become noticeably better. At the same time, replace the piston group and install a more powerful engine. Deep reworking of the engine and gearbox will allow for a qualitative change in the power plant. You will feel the dynamics already when you first start the engine and accelerate. Such tuning will be expensive, but it will be worth it.
- Chip tuning is most often recommended for injectors. Using a simple laptop, a small amount of equipment and application programs, the ECU is configured. The advantage of this method is its low cost - you do not have to carry out mechanical work or interfere with the elements of the unit. If you make a mistake, it will be enough to replace the on-board computer. It will cost less than replacing an engine if another type of tuning fails. After flashing the ECU, you will immediately notice a change in engine performance.
There are many techniques with which you can change the characteristics of a carburetor and injection model. Most work is carried out mechanically. If you have never encountered routine engine repairs until now, and you have little understanding of the principle of its structure, then entrust the modernization to professionals. They will offer you a change program and do the job efficiently.

As mentioned above, engine tuning involves several methods. They all have both their advantages and disadvantages.
Engine modernization in the first way
This option involves installing and replacing the following components:
- Lightweight connecting rods, which fit the size 121 mm.
- A lightweight crankshaft, the piston stroke of which should be 78 mm.
- Lightweight piston rings.
- Cylinder head borrowed from Lada Kalina.
- Forged pistons having a diameter of 82.5 mm.
- Camshaft size 11.3 mm.
Note. This modification of the engine gives considerable power, which in l/s is equal to 98. This also makes it possible to reach a maximum speed of 183 km/h.
Easy tuning of the VAZ 2109 engine
Method two
This method involves upgrading the engine by interfering with the operation of the transmission and carburetor. In this case, such modernization will not require too high financial costs, unless, of course, the work is carried out on its own. So:
- The first step is to install a new filter, which should have a diameter of 70 mm. This filter must have a direct-flow outlet device. This will make it possible to increase engine power by 10 l/s.
- We install a 5-speed transmission.
- We install a new oil cooler.
Option three
This method of engine modernization involves the installation of the following parts:
- New oil nozzles.
- Lightweight pistons.
- Lightweight crankshaft.
- New gearbox.
- Lightweight flywheel.
- Improved grip.

Carburetor
This part of the car is given special attention when improving the engine. In particular, the carburetor is replaced along with other parts:
- First of all, the spring is removed from the vacuum drive of the second chamber damper. This gives a good increase in power.
- You can also modify the vacuum drive by inserting a homemade wire ring into the design.
- The diffuser is being replaced.
- The pump nozzle is being replaced.
