What properties, features and characteristics do SRS motor oils have?

Volvo SRS emergency airbag service is activated if the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) malfunctions. This means that the airbags will not deploy if you are in an accident.

SRS malfunctions are most often caused by low battery voltage or a dead battery, running the electrical system without disconnecting the battery, a damaged clock spring, or problems with the SRS control unit.

IMPORTANT! Even though your Volvo will run and drive normally, don't ignore Volvo airbag warnings and think, "I'll fix it later." If you are involved in an accident, you are at risk of injury.

What does Volvo SRS Airbag Service Urgent mean?

If you see the SRS urgently installed on the dashboard, it means that there is a problem with the airbag system.

Your Volvo's airbags may not deploy if you are involved in an accident.

Even though Volvos are some of the safest cars on the road, with an SRS airbag warning message on the dashboard, the car won't be as safe.

Development

Initially, the DT SRS rifle was planned to be chambered only for the .338 Lapua Magnum cartridge. However, during the work, it was decided to make the new rifle modular in order to increase its tactical flexibility and provide shooters with the opportunity to train with cheaper cartridges (.308 cartridges are several times cheaper than .338 Lapua cartridges). According to manufacturers, DT SRS rifles provide shooting accuracy of 0.5 MOA (minutes of arc) when using appropriate cartridges.

Common reasons

Carrying out electrical work with a connected battery

Disabling components such as the stereo, seat, airbag, airbag sensor without disconnecting the battery is one of the most common reasons for the Volvo SRS warning to appear.

The good news is that you do not need to take your vehicle to the dealer to reset the SRS Airbag warning message. Although you cannot reset airbag warnings using a standard OBD2 scanner or by disconnecting the battery, you can use a Volvo scanner to clear the fault code from the airbag module.

Remember to always disconnect the battery when working on the electrical system.

Instrument Cluster/DIM

The Driver Information Module (DIM), which Volvo calls the instrument cluster, can fail. If DIM fails, the SRS airbag warning appears. You will also notice intermittent electrical problems on the dashboard , such as other warning lights, gauges not working, or the speedometer not working.

You can read more about this issue here: Volvo Instrument Cluster DIM Issues.

Previous accident

If your Volvo is involved in an accident, even if it is minor, the airbag light may come on. The alarm event will be stored in the SRS module. After a car accident, items such as seat belt pretensioners and airbags deploy and need to be replaced .

After replacing the airbags and seat belt tensioners, you will need to either replace the SRS module or reset it. Replacing the SRS module costs $1000+, but a less expensive solution would be to remove the SRS module from the center console and send it to a specialist for repair.

Check out these places that offer Volvo SRS airbag module repair.

Low battery | Jump Start

The Volvo SRS airbag message may also appear when you replace the battery or start the car if it is dead.

This is because the Volvo SRS module does not work properly at low voltage. Therefore, it stores a low voltage fault code in the SRS module , which triggers an SRS Safety Urgent message . Low battery related codes can be cleared using a Volvo scanner.

Below are the instructions to reset your Volvo airbag light.

Occupant Weight Sensor (OWS)

The Occupant Weight Sensor (OWS) is installed in the passenger seat cushion. It determines the weight of the front seat passenger. The passenger seat sensor is sometimes the culprit.

Another related problem that occurs quite often is that the wires under the seat that connect to the passenger's OWS sensor become damaged or disconnected.

Inspect the yellow connector under the passenger seat.

seat belt buckle

The seat belt buckle has a small sensor that detects whether you are using the seat belt or not. If the wires to the seat belt sensor (which is nothing more than a micro switch) become disconnected, you will receive a trouble code indicating an open circuit in the seat belt buckle. You can use a multimeter to test the switches in the seat belt buckle.

SRS module

The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) control module is located under the center console behind the switch. It may fail, especially when exposed to liquid. Not a very common problem.

Software problem

The SRS software may need to be updated. This can only be done by a Volvo dealer. Call your Volvo dealer and ask if there is an airbag module recall or software update. Depending on how old your Volvo is, you may be able to get the upgrade for free.

SIPS block

Side Impact Protection System (SIPS) is a passive safety system in Volvo designed to protect against injury in a side collision. Although rare, the SIPS unit can fail and may need to be replaced.

Operating principle of the belt stop sensor

When the lever deviates from the vertical by an angle of more than 200, the cam mechanism of the device switches two built-in three-contact switches, breaking the electrical power supply circuit of the tape drive and turning on the alarm. When the lever is vertically deflected at an angle of more than 300, the device is mechanically locked in the off state and the signal flag is simultaneously raised. To return the SRS conveyor emergency stop sensor to its original position, the operator must press the return lever.

How to reset the Volvo SRS airbag light?

Volvo SRS airbag codes do not reset on their own or when the battery is disconnected. The only way to reset Volvo SRS faults is to use a diagnostic tool. Of course, any Volvo dealer can reset a Volvo airbag light, but that's not the only route.

However much you spend at the Volvo dealer in one visit, you can spend on a good Volvo scanner like iCarsoft for Volvo or Autotel Maxidas and reset the SRS warning light yourself.

Follow these instructions to read and reset your Volvo airbag warning. For this procedure you will need a special Volvo scanner.

  1. Locate the OBD-II port under the dashboard.
  2. Connect your Volvo scanner.
  3. Turn on the ignition, but do not start the engine.
  4. Select your Volvo model from the menu.
  5. Select control units.
  6. Select SRS Control Unit .
  7. Then select Read Codes . Write down all codes.
  8. Go back and select Clear Codes .

Disconnecting the battery will not reset the Volvo SRS airbag emergency warning.

These steps will ONLY reset the Volvo SRS technical support emergency message if there is currently no problem with the SRS system. For example, the light came on because you disconnected the airbag wire, replaced the radio, or had a dead battery. These DTCs are in the STORED state and can be cleared.

If there is a problem with the airbag that is REAL, you cannot reset it. Even if you try the SRS airbag, the urgent warning will return immediately after you restart the car.

Safety rules when working with steering parts

Location of connecting wires

  • Improper installation of the connecting wires may cause an open circuit in the SRS system and the horn control circuit. Install the rotary contactor in the correct position (center) after performing the following work: Installing the steering wheel.
  • Installation of rotary contactor.
  • Installing the steering column.
  • Other work related to the removal, installation or adjustment of parts located in the steering column.
  • Do not disassemble the rotary contactor.
  • Do not lubricate the rotary contactor with grease.
  • If the rotary contactor is damaged in any way, it should be replaced with a new one. For example, if it does not rotate freely, replace the contactor.
  • FAQ

    Will I pass government inspection with my airbag light on?

    It depends on the states. A few states, such as Utah, will fail if the airbag light comes on. In other states, such as Maryland, safe radiation will pass through even if the SRS light is on.

    Is it possible to clear the Volvo airbag light by disconnecting the battery?

    No. Disconnecting the battery will not reset the Volvo airbag light.

    Device

    The Stealth Recon Scout (DT SRS) sniper rifle is built in a bullpup configuration. The basis of the design is a supporting aluminum tire, on which a steel receiver and a polymer stock are mounted. The rifle mechanism uses manual reloading with a longitudinally sliding rotary bolt. The barrels are interchangeable; sets of barrels and bolts for various calibers can be supplied with the rifle. All barrels are standardly threaded in the muzzle for installing a muzzle brake or muffler. Additionally, the Stealth Recon Scout (SRS) "Covert" variant has a shorter barrel with an integral suppressor. The cartridges are fed from specially designed 5-round box magazines. The trigger mechanism is adjustable, the manual safety levers are conveniently located above the trigger guard on both sides of the weapon. The rifle does not have open sights; instead, a Picatinny rail type guide is made on the upper surface of the receiver, onto which any type of optical sight can be installed using appropriate brackets. Additional guides are made on the forend, around the barrel. The rifle stock is equipped with an adjustable buttplate.

    Production

    Many experts advise car owners to use oils from SRS as engine lubricants. This is a German brand that is not very popular, but has all the necessary characteristics to be among the top best lubricant companies. The company, which produces motor oils, is located in Salzbergen (Germany). The full name of the company is SRS Schmierstoff Vertrieb GmbH. They work closely with H&R Chem Pharm. These are certified specialists who produce high-quality products from the petrochemical industry. Their main specialization is the creation of oils and lubricants of industrial and automotive type.

    The company clearly understands the needs of modern customers and works to improve products. This is possible due to the use of the most advanced equipment installed at the company’s factories. The oil is created from raw materials that go through several stages of processing and deep purification. This technique allows you to remove all harmful and unnecessary impurities from the base by diluting the prepared oil base with special additive packages. The German company is trusted by world-famous car manufacturers and motor oil brands. Many consider SRS to be at least the European leader in the production of lubricants. This is confirmed by the cooperation of many companies from Europe, the USA and Asia with SRS.

    The largest clients of SRS, to whom the German plant supplies raw materials for the production of its own lines of motor oils, are considered:

    • Mobil 1;
    • BP;
    • Aral;
    • Castrol.

    There are also a number of automobile companies that fill the assembly line with motor lubricants from a German company. These are such auto giants as:

    • BMW;
    • Mercedes;
    • Audi;
    • Volkswagen;
    • Toyota, etc.

    If we talk about our own line of motor lubricants produced under the SRS brand, there are quite a lot of them. To a greater extent, consumers are interested in compounds that are intended for passenger cars. Among them, the bulk falls into the category of synthetic lubricants, but the range also includes semi-synthetic compounds.

    Types and technical characteristics

    To make your choice, you should study in more detail the universal motor oils offered by the German company. It cannot yet be said that its product line is widely represented in Russia or the CIS countries. But if you want, you can find the appropriate lubricants. All lubricants from SRS have specifications, certificates of conformity and approvals of the highest level. This is not surprising, given the close cooperation with recognized leaders in automobile production and the production of motor oils.

The lubricant is mainly aimed at Japanese-made cars, but is also suitable for cars from European manufacturers.
    9. Special MS. Similar to the previous composition for power units of different types and degrees of wear. It is characterized by an insignificant amount of ash content in the liquid composition. Fully synthetic, which is recommended for new engines or engines with average mileage. The composition has approvals from a wide range of automakers, including Toyota, Mitsubishi, Fiat. Honda, Citroen and Peugeot. Japanese-French motor lubricant that allows you to confidently operate cars at different temperatures, under load and in normal urban conditions.
    10. Viva 1 Top Synth. Highly efficient synthetic motor fluid with an easy-to-flow composition and low ash content. The manufacturer placed the main emphasis on the European market. Therefore, these oils perform well in heavy traffic conditions, on highways, in naturally aspirated and turbocharged engines. The list of available approvals includes such automakers as Porsche, Renault, BMW, Mercedes, Opel, Volkswagen.
    11. Top Synth Alpha. 100% synthetics, which is characterized by high efficiency, energy-saving properties and protective parameters. Lubricant for the European market. This composition has received approvals from Opel, Volkswagen, BMW and Mercedes.
    12. Top Synth Alpha LA. Excellent quality synthetic motor oil. It has a highly effective base, which is supplemented with a package of special additives. With their help, the manufacturer provided the oil with a rich list of advantages and capabilities. Therefore, it is not surprising that the lubricant has received a wide range of approvals from Mercedes, BMW, Volkswagen and Ford, which meet the most stringent requirements today.

    Consumers themselves speak positively about the products of the German company SRS. There may be some problems finding it. Not all specialized stores that sell motor and other lubricants offer a wide range of SRS fluids. But in big cities and especially with the Internet, purchasing SRS products is not considered a serious problem.

    What devices can be activated in a side impact?

    In this case, depending on the vehicle’s equipment, either the belt tensioners or the side airbags may work. The latter are usually installed on cars of middle and more prestigious classes. Budget cars are equipped only with tensioners, which are activated upon impact, fixing the person’s body in the seat.

    Also, depending on the force of the impact, the battery disconnect switch in the car is triggered. Thus, in the event of a collision, the risk of a short circuit or spark formation is completely reduced. This reduces the possibility of unauthorized ignition of the vehicle as a result of a hole in the gas tank or other deformations of body parts.
