Features of power steering
Replacing power steering fluid
Hydraulic power steering makes it easier to control the vehicle. To maintain the serviceability of the mechanism, you need to regularly service it by filling it with high-quality lubricant.
Every driver wants their car to function properly. At the same time, not everyone is ready to spend money and time on full maintenance with removal, disassembly and replacement of damaged elements. Car owners are often looking for a simpler and less expensive solution, and so they come to different additives for power steering. We will help you understand these supplements and understand how and why they work.
How to lubricate a steering rack
Once the choice has been made in favor of one or another lubricant for the rack, it must be remembered that it is also necessary to directly lubricate this unit correctly. It is important to separate racks with power steering and racks without power steering, as well as with power steering. The fact is that in hydraulic steering racks there is no need to lubricate their drive shaft, since it is lubricated naturally thanks to the power steering fluid, in particular, the point of contact between the gear and rack is lubricated. But the shafts of conventional racks and racks with electric power steering need lubrication.
To change the lubricant on the shaft, the steering rack does not need to be dismantled. The main thing is to find the adjusting mechanism, where, in fact, the new lubricant is added. Where it is located on a specific car model - you need to inquire in the relevant technical documentation. The second important point is that it is advisable to thoroughly remove the old lubricant so that it does not mix with the newly applied product. However, to do this you will need to dismantle the rail. But in most cases, new grease on the shaft is simply added to the old one.
How do power steering additives work?
When additives are added to the lubricant in a hydraulic system, its consistency changes. In this regard, immediately after replacing the lubricant composition, the positive effect disappears and you have to buy a new portion of the additive. The additive acts as a friction geomodifier, which acts on all components of the system. After maintenance according to the regulations, the positive effect will not disappear. The additive, depending on the manufacturer and type, has the following positive effects:
- makes it easier to rotate the steering wheel;
- reduces vibration intensity;
- makes power steering less noisy when turning;
- helps restore the rubbing surfaces of parts, eliminates wear and extends the service life of the mechanism as a whole.
Some additives do not improve the characteristics of oils, but penetrate into microscopic gaps, cracks and chips, creating a smooth monolithic surface of rubbing parts. Consequently, the protective layer prevents the formation of metal shavings during the interaction of parts, and also protects the metal from scuffing and chipping.
We recently had an article about commonly used molybdenum additives, which we also advise you to read.
Design features of the hydraulic booster
Hydraulic booster components:
- liquid;
- tank;
- pump;
- rotary valve;
- hydraulic chamber.
Hydraulic power steering systems use a pump as a power source to pump oil into the system, creating the pressure necessary for components such as mechanical steering and hydraulic cylinder to function properly. The pump also has a significant impact on steering efficiency, overall energy consumption and noise levels. High-quality booster pumps are defined by design features such as small external dimensions and weight, high performance, and the ability to work with a variety of engine and vehicle models.
The pressure valve maintains high pressure regardless of engine speed. New hydraulic steering systems use valves that allow fluid to flow based on driving speed, reducing pressure in the power steering system and making the steering wheel stiffer. The latter allows you to feel the car better during fast driving.
Additive from Suprotek
Suprotek power steering
One of the popular additives for a hydraulic booster is Suprotek GUR, which, according to the manufacturer, is intended to restore the technical characteristics of the unit when the first signs of a malfunction occur. Additives also extend the life of the amplifier mechanism on used cars, but they are useless in case of mechanical failures of the power steering. The fluid is compatible with various power steering oils, including mineral and synthetic ones. The manufacturer does not disclose the composition, specifying only that the main working substance is mineral microparticles. The additive is used in power steering from Suprotek as follows:
- the contents of the bottle must be mixed to distribute the sediment;
- then the additive is poured into the tank at the rate of 30 ml per liter of oil;
- operate the machine in normal mode;
- after 200 km you need to change the oil in the amplifier;
- if the positive effect does not appear, you can apply the additive again.
Motorists usually expect amazingly good results, but this is not always justified. When present in the oil, the additive creates a metallic protective layer on the parts, which compensates for wear and minimizes clearance. As a result, the functioning of all components is improved: the pump delivers pressure close to the design pressure, and the spool mechanism better distributes the lubricant in the system. As a result, steering wheel rotation is simplified and noise and vibration are reduced. The cost of such an additive for power steering is about 1,000 rubles.
Instructions for use
Using sealant does not cause any difficulties. The packaging of most additives contains detailed descriptions and recommendations, which will help you learn about all the intricacies of their use.
In general, the procedure is as follows:
- pour sealant into the tank, filling it to the specified level;
- Turn the steering wheel from side to side several times until it stops.
Please note that if the system is full, a small amount of hydraulic fluid may need to be pumped out first. About 300 ml is enough and then pour the same amount of sealant into the tank.
It is very important not to make mistakes in calculating the ratio of the volume of the additive to the hydraulic fluid. Most often, 120 ml of sealant per 1 liter of liquid is required. This formula will help calculate the required amount of additive.
It is recommended to add power steering sealant every 20-25 thousand kilometers. This procedure can also be carried out when replacing the hydraulic fluid in the system, as well as when noise occurs or it is difficult to turn the steering wheel, which may indicate wear on the power steering.
Hado
Hado EX120
There is also an additive from Hado, sold under the EX120 label and intended for power steering. It costs about 1,000 rubles, and when used, the manufacturer promises the following beneficial effects:
- when using an additive, the mechanism is restored and the noisy operation of a worn pump can even be eliminated;
- reduced effort when turning the steering wheel; protection of parts from wear even when there is no lubrication in the system;
- You will notice an improvement in performance after 50-100 km.
Popular brands for power steering
As I have already noted, the range of products is very wide, therefore, when entering the auto chemicals market, it is worth paying attention to the most popular formulations. Let's look at the additives in demand in Russia.
Additive name | Description |
RVS Master | Has restorative properties. Forms a metal-ceramic layer on the parts. Does a great job with noise. Power steering service life increases. |
Suprotec | Used to restore the technical parameters of the mechanism. Creates a protective film of metal. |
Xado | Gel that envelops the parts of the mechanism. The film hardening period lasts up to 50 hours. Eliminates steering wheel noise and jamming. |
Liqui Moly | Sealant made in Germany. Eliminates leaks and cleans the system of deposits. Reduces friction and reduces noise. |
Hi-Gear | American additive with organic composition. Works great on rubber and plastic parts. Eliminates microcracks and reduces noise. |
It is better to choose additives taking into account the current circumstances. It is important to be guided by the condition of the car, the type of breakdown and the effect that you would like to achieve. The supplement must be used strictly according to the instructions. In terms of price, the compounds are not considered cheap. For a small container you will have to pay 500 rubles or more.
Wagner
WINDIGO ECO-Universal Oil Package
The manufacturer produces high-quality additives for cars, among which there is a universal product WINDIGO ECO-Universal Oil Package, which costs 2,000-2,500 rubles. Marketers do not promise that worn-out elements will miraculously be restored by attaching metal atoms. Everything works even simpler: the additive has anti-friction properties and is designed to provide maximum protection of parts from wear during operation of the mechanism. Therefore, it is better to use the additive on new cars rather than on used cars.
The Wagner additive works as follows:
- protection of power steering elements from wear - the speed of this process is reduced by approximately half;
- a single use of the composition ensures protection of parts for at least 60 thousand km;
- easier steering rotation;
- approximately doubling the service life of the mechanism;
- reduction of noise and vibration during pump operation.
Hi-Gear STEER PLUS power steering sealant: features
Hi-Gear STEER PLUS - this additive is very effective in eliminating oil seal leaks, which has been repeatedly proven in practice. It is suitable for protecting elements:
By adding Hi-Gear STEER PLUS sealant to the hydraulic fluid, you can significantly increase the service life of the system and avoid premature failure of the above components. It allows you to reduce power steering noise during operation and helps reduce heating.
Hi-Gear STEER PLUS can be used for preventive purposes. It ensures the elasticity of rubber elements and maintains their shape, preventing the formation of fistulas. This sealant is considered universal because it is suitable for any vehicles equipped with power steering.
The additive is not demanding on hydraulic fluids, their composition and quality. It is quickly pumped throughout the entire system and ensures complete sealing of seals and gaskets from the inside.
Other additives for power steering
Hi-Gear for power steering
Other additives can be added to the power steering system, including a product from Hi-Gear. Unlike the mentioned compounds, it contains mainly organic substances, so it acts differently. The main effect created is to restore the integrity of plastic connections and pipes, as well as eliminate microcracks that eventually lead to leaks.
You can use Steer Plus to seal your power steering. Using this composition, you can eliminate oil leaks so that you can get to the workshop on your own. At the same time, do not count on a long-term effect - after 1,000 km you need to contact a service center so that the technicians can fix the leak.
The can of the product indicates that it was created for tuning the steering system. This is explained by an incorrect translation, since in English the main meaning of the term tuning is considered to be “fine tuning” and “selection of optimal parameters.” There are other additives that improve power steering performance, creating the following positive effects:
- reduced friction and slower wear;
- easier steering rotation;
- restoration of coordination of shaft rotation with the operation of the amplifier;
- noise reduction;
- eliminating the steering wheel locking when turning it to its extreme position.

Product Description
Suprotec power steering is a specialized tribotechnical composition designed to restore and protect the power steering system of various passenger vehicles.
The action of the tribotechnological composition is based on the identification of friction pairs that require the greatest protection. It is in these places that the product acts, covering the surface of worn parts with a new metal layer that is highly resistant to wear. The use of the drug can restore the operating pressure of the pump, clean the spool mechanism and optimize the clearances inside the unit. Remanufactured parts retain an oil film better and are better able to resist wear and corrosion. Technical tests have shown that power steering treated with the Suprotek additive can last 1.5-2 times longer compared to an untreated system.
