Despite recent restrictions on the level of light transmittance of car windows, drivers have not abandoned window tinting. Today, the market for these services has become even larger due to the introduction of new technologies. We suggest you look into the range of tinting materials to decide whether you need such tuning and which type to prefer.
Traditional tint films
It’s worth mentioning right away that by tint film we mean a special synthetic-based coating that is sold in rolls and glued to car windows. Standard tinting can be divided into several types.
Dyed film
This type can be understood as any product that has a color other than transparent. That is, black, white or colored - all these are types of colored film. This is the oldest and most proven method of glass tinting, but you need to take into account the light transmittance coefficient when purchasing such material.
Printed film
Another name is art film. The essence of this product lies in its name - a certain drawing or picture is placed on the film. There are many different products on sale with the print already applied. You can also make a custom order with an image to suit your taste. Art film is glued to the side windows or rear door.
Athermal film
It is often called “chameleon” tinting. Indeed, from different viewing angles such a film can change its color. At the same time, it always has a dominant color. For example, green or blue. Motorists respect athermal film for its ability to block ultraviolet rays. Thus, even in the sunniest and hottest weather, the car interior does not get very hot.
Gradient film
With this tinting, the car glass acquires an interesting shade. Gradient tinting does a good job of darkening the car interior from the windshield side. It usually has a darker base at the top and a lighter base at the bottom. This arrangement of colors protects the eyes and does not interfere with the driver’s view.
Metallized film, also known as mirror tinting
Cars with such film are most often stopped by traffic police officers. With this method of tinting, car windows take on the appearance of mirrors. There are few advantages to such tuning, but the cost can be steep.
Perforated tinting
Most often it is stuck on the side windows or on the back door. Often, perforated film is combined with some kind of advertising print. In ordinary life, such tinting is very rare on passenger cars.
These are the main types of tinting films that can be found in stores or specialized service stations.
Car tinting according to state standard
When performing car tinting in Moscow, the company's employees know the requirements of the state standard for tinting car windows. The legislator has provided restrictions on light transmission so that traffic police officers and passers-by can see the driver’s face and his condition.
The regulatory requirements are as follows:
- The windshield transmits light at least seventy-five percent.
- Front windows should transmit light from 70%.
- There are no restrictions on other glasses.
The state standard allows the use of art elements. When tinting a car, it is allowed to use an opaque stripe pattern up to fifteen centimeters wide on the windshield.
The side windows are decorated at the driver's discretion. It is allowed to use classic black, mirror, film with a metallic sheen.
Removable tinting, tinting curtains
There is also tint that can be installed or removed in a few minutes. There are several types:
- Silicone pads. A thin silicone film that simply presses against the glass and sticks to it. Fastening to the window occurs from the inside. Silicone adheres to glass due to electrical statics.
- Plastic tinting. A less common and impractical option. Essentially, an exact copy of each piece of glass is cut to size from a thin material like plexiglass. The usual tint is glued directly onto it and this entire structure is secured to the window using a thin line of double-sided tape. Drivers did not appreciate this technological solution, since the plastic layer gives the effect of double refraction of light rays. Plastic tint glares and distracts from the road.
- Tinted with Velcro. It is a piece of plastic with tinting applied, which is fixed to the glass using 4 Velcro strips in the corners. In this case, the window becomes dull.
- Curtain. This method of darkening the interior became widespread when motorists in Russia began to remove the tint due to new traffic police requirements. A curtain is a piece of thick fabric the size of a car window, which is attached and moved on two guides. They are installed at the top and bottom of the window, attached with clips directly to the contour of the window opening.
Alternative methods of darkening are not widely used. Most often they look cheap and do not fit well. In addition, they require additional care.
Advantages of tinted glass over clear glass:
- Protects the car interior from prying eyes
- Glass becomes stronger and more difficult to break.
- Tinting car windows helps to absorb glare from the sun.
- The glow of the headlights of oncoming cars is softened.
- Tinting prevents overheating of the interior, blocking up to 70% of the sun's heat rays.
- Prevents interior fading by reflecting ultraviolet rays of the sun.
Electronic tinting
This is the most expensive tint, which can only be obtained upon order. In principle, it is difficult to call it tinting as such. This is a special glass with a microscopic layer of metal alloy. Under the influence of small currents, the metal is polarized, due to which the glass takes on the desired color shade. Mercedes Benz engineers were among the first to introduce such a development into their luxury cars.
The cost of electronic window tinting starts at $5,000. Only private, narrowly focused studios that specialize in tuning luxury cars will be able to fulfill such an order.
As practice shows, tinting can protect the driver from the harmful radiation of the sun by a maximum of 20-25%, so the feasibility of its installation is a big question. Which tint to choose is up to the motorist to decide. The only thing I would like to draw attention to is: when choosing, always take into account the light transmittance of the film and the glass itself. These indicators need to be added up and not considered separately, otherwise claims from traffic inspectors cannot be avoided.

Car detonation
To remove the tint film without damaging the glass, it is better to turn to the services of professionals. The following problems are possible when tinting yourself:
- if you try to pick up the coating with something sharp, the glass surface can easily be scratched;
- the film may tear if it was glued independently or low-quality materials were used, and now it will take a lot of time to dismantle it;
- After removal, glue may remain on the surface of the glass, which can only be removed with professional removers or special detergents.
In our studio, tinting is carried out by experienced craftsmen who know how this or that material will behave during dismantling, and are ready for all possible troubles.
Self-adhesive film
Having carefully studied GOST on tinting, you can proceed directly to the main operations. If a film was chosen to darken the glass, then you can glue it yourself, saving on the services of specialists. In this case, it will be possible to control the quality of the work.
From the film prepared in advance, cut a piece that matches the shape of the glass to be tinted. There should be an overlap of 3-5 mm at the edges. Next, the base is prepared. The glass is wiped with a dry cloth, after which a soap solution is applied to its surface.
The base layer is very carefully separated from the film. A solution of soap is also applied to its adhesive side. Then the properly prepared membrane is applied to the glass. The top is treated with the same product as the inside. Using a spatula, the surface is carefully smoothed. It is necessary to avoid strong pressure so as not to leave scratches.
When the film sticks to the surface of the glass, use a blade and a ruler to cut off the protruding part. The bottom edge should not protrude beyond the elastic band. After about four hours, the membrane will set completely. To reduce the drying process, it is recommended to place the window near a heating radiator or other devices that produce heat.
Spray glass tinting
When applying a darkening layer, magnetron or plasma sputtering methods are used. These application methods are typical mainly for large enterprises and firms. Carrying out spray tinting work is simply not acceptable in any kind of makeshift environment, so do not be tempted by promising advertising.
Did you know...
... that spray tinting existed long before the advent of films. Until the end of the 80s, car windows were mainly tinted either in bulk or by applying a metallized layer. Both could only be done in production conditions.
Sputtering has some advantages over film, but it has more disadvantages. For example, removing spraying requires dismantling glass. In addition, removing sprayed tint is not much easier than applying it. Today you can hardly find a car whose windows were spray-tinted, but 20 years ago there were quite a lot of them.
