Rules for choosing summer and winter tires for Hyundai Solaris

It is necessary to monitor the pressure of car tires twice a month. This will significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions, reduce fuel consumption and extend the life of the tires themselves. Don’t forget about comfort, which is not very pleasant when driving on overinflated tires. In the table below, we suggest you familiarize yourself with the recommended tire pressure for Hyundai cars.

Pressure in Solaris

The pressure in Hyundai Solaris cars is indicated on the door arch. It is recommended to pump Solaris tires at 2.2 bar, regardless of the tire size. Naturally, this is the pressure in cold tires, i.e. in a car that had been at rest for 30 minutes. If you measure the pressure in hot tires, it will be higher than recommended for Solaris. For economical mode, it is recommended to pump the tires to 2.8 bar; this will allow, albeit slightly, to save on fuel. Although, perhaps, to the detriment of saving on tires.

What should the pressure be in Santa Fe?

Santa Fe belongs to the class of small SUVs, so its tire pressure can vary significantly depending on operating conditions and the tires installed. The suspension on the Santa Fe is soft, so you need to keep the tires with low pressure only when necessary, for example, when we are driving on a muddy forest road or you need to reduce the pressure to lower the car's height by 2-5 cm.

Winter tire tests:

Well, we had to come to Sweden twice. The first time we sat there for a week, running the entire testing program on snow and ice. And then, already in April, on the roads that had just been cleared of ice, they measured the braking distance on wet and dry asphalt - and assessed the acoustic comfort and smoothness of the ride. Well, then, using the traditional system of converting results into points, we summed up the results.

In the next big stud test, we collected six sets of 15-inch tires from Western and Eastern manufacturers. Some have experience and the latest technologies among their trump cards, while others have the will to win and affordable prices. Whose will he take?

This time we chose one of the most popular sizes - 195/65 R15, which suits many small and inexpensive cars. Different markets, different understanding of the product, different design schools. What distinguishes tires from the East and West from each other, what are their strengths and weaknesses, and what should the Russian buyer pay attention to?

If you are reading this article, then the words “winter is coming” are a call to action for you. Moreover, we have collected for you the best of 80 winter tires and invited you to vote for the best in our rating. Check out the results. And so, let’s make a rating of the TOP 20 tires for winter 2020 and consider studless tires for crossovers and SUVs.

In the next comparative test of winter tires of the popular “crossover” size 215/65 R16, 23 models competed - an absolute record for mass participation in the entire history of Autoreview tests! Not only did we manage to embrace the immensity, but at the same time we also stopped the shipment of one of the shipments of Nokian tires...

Summer tire tests:

Recently, the sizes of tires in the original equipment of cars have increased significantly. The time for R13 175/70 tires for Zhigulis has passed; now “huge bast shoes” are priorities. This is due to the latest trends in the world and the increased demand for SUV cars. Let's take a look at the test in which Autoreview employees tested Tiguan's native sizes 215/65 R17 and 255/45 R19. In the first size there were 6 models on the starting grid, in the second size there were 5 models.

Models in different sizes vary, because... Most large tires are made in UHP format. These changes are dictated by the sporty style of large wheel sizes.

The cheaper the tires, the easier the choice? No, it’s more difficult! We tested twelve sets of summer tires with dimensions 185/60 R14 for the most affordable cars. And they not only put all the participants in their places, but also found out what an attempt to save money on a purchase could result in.

185/60 R14 tires are usually purchased by owners of Lada cars and older foreign cars. For tire manufacturers, small sizes are not of great interest due to low profitability. Decent new products in this segment are very rare. However, tire manufacturers who seriously care about their image try from year to year to improve, although familiar, but quite successful models.

We are testing summer tires of size 195/65 R15 for relatively inexpensive cars and observing how their characteristics have changed dramatically over the past ten years. Nowadays, even small and inexpensive cars roll off the assembly line on 15-inch wheels. Many Russians also install “tags” with a higher profile on quite expensive cars - they are preferable on our roads. Tire manufacturers, for whom income depends more on the standard sizes of tires sold than on their quantity, are indifferent to budget dimensions. New products are offered at least in the “seventeen-inch” segment, and small sizes are sluggishly updated, usually slightly reducing rolling resistance. Nevertheless, there are companies for which the Russian market is very important, and they are literally fighting for leading positions, annually “polishing” their products, trying to get ahead of competitors in adhesion properties on dry and wet surfaces. Therefore, there is always intrigue in our tests.

Complexity

Tool

5 – 30 min

Tools:

  • Wheel key
  • Pressure gauge
  • Compressor (if necessary)
  • Ruler

Parts and consumables:

  • Spool valve protective caps (if necessary)

Note:

There is a sticker on the left center pillar of the car that indicates the air pressure in different tire sizes.

The air pressure in the 185/65 R15 and 195/55 R16 front and rear tires should be 220 kPa (2.2 bar). It is advisable to carry out all wheel repair work in specialized workshops.

Check that the wheel is balanced after repair.

1.

Unscrew the cap from the valve.

2.

Check the tire pressure. To do this, connect the pump tip with a pressure gauge.

3.

If the pressure is less than required, pump up air, monitoring the pressure using the pressure gauge.

4.

If the pressure is higher than required, push down on the spool tip and release the air from the tire. Measure the pressure with a pressure gauge. By repeating these operations, bring the pressure to normal.

5.

If you notice that the air pressure in your tires is constantly dropping, try tightening the spool valve using a cap and wrench.

Note:

This is what a protective cap with a key for tightening the spool looks like.

Warning:

To avoid contamination of the spools, do not operate the vehicle without protective caps. If the caps are lost, be sure to install new ones.

6.

To check the tightness of the spool, wet the valve hole.

7.

If bubbles of escaping air appear, replace the spool by unscrewing the faulty one using a cap with a key.

8.

Use a ruler or caliper to measure the remaining tread depth. If the tread depth is 1.6 mm or less, replace the tire (for winter tires, the remaining tread depth is 4.0 mm).

9.

If you don’t have a caliper or ruler at hand, you can check the tread depth visually using tire wear indicators in the form of solid transverse stripes on the tread.

Note:

The indicator locations are marked on the tire sidewall with a triangle or the letters “TWI”.

Mark the location of the indicators on the sidewall of the tire.

10.

Check the tightness of the wheel nuts with the appropriate tool.

Note:

The bolts must be tightened crosswise.

USEFUL TIPS:

Check your tire pressure periodically. Increased or decreased pressure leads to premature tire wear, deterioration of vehicle controllability and stability, increased fuel consumption, and wheel deformation.

A significant decrease in pressure (70 kPa or more) can cause significant heat build-up and cause tire blowouts, tread separation and other tire damage, which may result in loss of vehicle control, resulting in serious injury or death.

The risk of such overheating increases significantly on hot days or when driving for long periods of time at high speeds. Increased tire pressure leads to increased sensitivity to road imperfections, excessive wear in the middle of the tire tread, and an increased likelihood of tire damage due to road imperfections. Maintain proper tire pressure.

Use a high quality tire pressure gauge to check your tire pressure. It is impossible to determine whether the air pressure in a tire corresponds to the recommended value by external signs without taking measurements. Radial tires may appear properly inflated even when the pressure is low.

Check the air pressure when the tires are cold. The tires of a car that has not been driven for at least 3 hours or has driven less than 1.6 km are considered cold.

If the tire pressure when cold is within the recommended pressure indicated on the tire and on the vehicle load rating plate, no further pressure adjustment is required. If the pressure is low, inflate the tire until the recommended value is reached.

If the tire pressure is high, release the air by pressing the metal rod in the center of the tire charging valve. Recheck the pressure on the pressure gauge. Make sure that the caps are installed on the valve stems when work is completed. This will prevent leaks by providing protection from dirt and moisture.

Using wheels and tires that are different from the recommended sizes may cause changes in driving characteristics and poor vehicle handling, which could result in a serious accident.

To ensure that tires wear evenly, every 12,000 km, rearrange the wheels in accordance with the diagram.

In addition, every 15,000 km, balance the wheels and check the alignment of the front wheels. To do this, contact a specialized workshop.

Do you know which indicator is one of the main ones that determines the behavior of your car while driving on the road? This indicator plays a significant role in the effectiveness of adhesion to the road surface, which, in turn, directly affects the level of safety of movement. Ensuring the proper level of this indicator recommended by the car manufacturer is one of the most reliable options to avoid problems along the way.

We are, of course, talking about tire pressure levels.

. And today we will get acquainted with information about this important indicator from the words of specialists.

What tire size is recommended?

When deciding which tires should be installed on a Nissan Qashqai, you should understand what kind of assembly the vehicle has. As a rule, the manufacturer installs wheels with a radius of 16 and 19 inches on this car. Some owners prefer to replace the factory tires and wheels with aftermarket ones over time. Usually, the initial plan is to replace the disk. Thus, when changing it, you need to pay attention to the tires themselves, since sometimes non-standard wheels cannot be compared with standard tires.

The most suitable option for the Qashqai, which will be optimal not only from a functional point of view, but also from the stylistic point of view of the entire car, are wheels with a 19 radius combined with low-profile tires. However, in this case, the handling rate is slightly reduced due to the increased weight of the wheels.

Another disadvantage is the rapid failure of the car’s suspension, since it takes all the impacts due to the rigidity and low profile of the rubber. Moreover, most roads in our country simply do not allow the use of such luxury even in the summer. As for winter, you should completely refrain from accessories such as low-profile tires and wheels with a radius of more than 16 inches.

The most ideal option for Nissan Qashqai is wheels with a diameter of 16 inches. The car moves smoothly and quietly with their help. In this case, the suspension does not wear out (if driving occurs in a quiet mode). Some motorists prefer to use wheels with a diameter of 18 inches.

However, in the future you may encounter difficulties in finding appropriate tires. If you choose this option, you will have to look for tires with a larger profile. Finding them is quite problematic, since they are not popular among drivers.

16" wheels and matching tires

If we talk about 16-inch wheels, then for them it is better to select tires with a size of 215/60. Rubber is difficult to find in a special store, so in order to find a way out of the situation, motorists buy it with other characteristics. They will differ from those recommended by the manufacturer.

It is important to purchase tires that are not too wide. With its help, fuel consumption will increase several times, and the controllability of the car will also decrease. It is better to look at the profile with a value of 65. If you exceed this value, it will be more difficult to control the car, and if, on the contrary, the movement will become abrupt and harsh.

Possible negative factors

  • increased fuel consumption;
  • deformation of tires, chassis;
  • the possibility that the tire will burst.

In addition to the fact that such factors affect the performance and life of your vehicle, it is also unsafe. Therefore, such problems should not be neglected.

Agree, it is much more profitable to prevent a problem than to spend money on repairing it later. Therefore, a technical inspection of your vehicle should be carried out in a timely manner.

Many car owners of the popular Japanese crossover Nissan Qashqai do not attach serious importance to one of the most important indicators that determine the clarity of its control on the roads. This is the tire pressure in the wheels, which differs not only from seasonality, but also from the radius of the tires. Often, on a car, a table with the necessary tire pressure data for a Nissan Qashqai is located on the door frame pillar or on the inside of the gas tank flap. But if it is not there, you should familiarize yourself with the following recommendations from experts.

Wheels 17, 19 inches and corresponding tires

For 17-inch wheels, it is better to match tires with a size of 215/60. If you choose a larger size, there is a chance that the rubber will touch the wheel arches. The same situation will happen with 19-inch wheels.

In this situation, it is not recommended to combine large profile values with tire width in order to avoid dangerous situations and possible accidents. The tires will touch the arches, even on small, insignificant bumps. As a result, the tires will wear out quickly. Thus, 19-inch wheels require tire parameters of 225/45.

18" wheels and matching tires

As is already known, the plant does not produce 18-inch wheels. But if suddenly a motorist wants to put massive wheels on his Nissan Qashqai, then the best choice is wheels with a diameter of 18 inches. At the same time, there will be no loss of comfort and softness when traveling.

As a result of various tests, it was discovered that for such wheels the tires should meet the parameters 215/50. If these factors are observed, the ride will retain its softness, smoothness and comfort.

What should be the pressure in 16th radius wheels?

When monitoring pressure or inflating tires, it is worth considering that old pressure gauges, which many car enthusiasts use, can significantly overestimate readings due to excessive wear of the inner spring.

R16 wheels are the basic ones in the Qashqai crossover and have the most successful characteristics for car handling and the softness of its suspension. The indicators that the automaker recommends to adhere to look like this:

  • front tires of the car - 2.3 atmospheres;
  • if there are less than 3 passengers in the back row of the car, the rear tires must be inflated to 2.1 atmospheres;
  • if there are more than 3 passengers, then the rear wheels are inflated to 2.3 atmospheres.

Checking inflated tires should only be done after the car has been parked for a long time, when they have completely cooled down. When inflating tires to the values recommended by the car manufacturer, do not forget about the properties of air, which in the hot season is subject to expansion, and in the frosty season tends to contract.

It is for this reason that many experts recommend not raising the tire pressure to the recommended norm in the summer, leaving approximately 0.2 atmospheres for air expansion, and in winter, on the contrary, strictly adhering to the norm.

Why are big wheels needed?

Large tires are installed to solve certain problems. For example, a motorist thus emphasizes the design, style and modernity of his car. In addition, tires with high tread significantly increase the vehicle's ground clearance. This is an important parameter for Nissan Qashqai, especially if you often travel on bad roads (potholes, rocks). The main advantage of wide tires is excellent grip on the road surface. This helps in the following cases:

  • on sharp turns,
  • on ice,
  • on a snowy road,
  • on wet asphalt,

Popular summer tires

  • Continental ContiCross. This model is best suited for fast, sharp driving. It has a well defined longitudinal rib. The presence of reinforced blocks guarantees overcoming turns without any difficulties. Multiple sipes are used for better road grip. Unlike previous developments, manufacturers have improved the tread. However, this version is not the cheapest.
  • Hankook Dynapro. This option is slightly cheaper than the previous one. He doesn't have great performance. However, these tires are not suitable for sharp, hard driving. The tread on them was developed using special nanotechnology equipment. It is for this reason that the tires have proven themselves well both when traveling around the city and in off-road conditions.
  • Maxxis UE-103. This model has such characteristics as: reliability, fast braking, and silent movement on the road. The car will be easy to drive in any weather.
  • Maxxis HP-M3 BRAVO. This model has advantages: good traction, low price, quiet operation, high quality, comfortable ride, durability and safety.
  • Goodrich ACTIVAN. This option is suitable for fast driving. Main advantages: low noise, smooth cornering, versatility, excellent ride on any surface, does not deteriorate at low temperatures.

How to properly inflate 17-radius wheels

Non-standard tires installed on a car require more careful monitoring of tire inflation using modern electronic pressure gauges that have a small error; this will help avoid possible emergency situations due to low or excessively high pressure.

The automaker provides configurations for the Qashqai crossover with R17 wheels, the pressure in which should have indicators similar to those of 16-radius tires, namely:

  • before – 2.3 atmospheres;
  • rear when the car is not loaded – 2.1 atmospheres;
  • for more than 3 passengers - at least 2.3 atmospheres.

Due to the physical properties of air, which expands noticeably when heated and begins to contract at low temperatures, it is quite difficult to control and maintain the correct indicators. To make the task easier, the automaker has provided a special system called a pressure regulator.

This system can be installed as a separate option on the Nissan Qashqai crossover and with its help, inflate the car’s wheels directly from the passenger compartment. For these purposes, the pressure regulator is equipped with an air compressor and special valves, and its control panel is located on the crossover dashboard.

Popular winter tires

  • Nokian Hakkapeliitta. This model will definitely not fail in emergency situations, as the company has taken good care of safety and reliability. Of the minuses, it is worth noting the cost, which exceeds many other similar tires.
  • Pirelli Winter. These tires are friction (Velcro) tires. On snowy or wet roads they provide excellent grip on the road surface. But when driving on bare ice at high speeds, especially on the highway, there is a possibility of skidding.
  • Artmotion Snow. This model has a deep tread that provides high-quality traction and braking, a soft ride and a smooth ride.
  • Landsail. These tires position themselves as wear-resistant and can withstand impacts well. The undoubted advantages include low cost and good road grip.
  • BF Goodrich. These tires guarantee good grip on wet roads. They have a strong side part, which ensures a low probability of side cuts.

Thus, we can conclude that before purchasing certain tires for the Nissan Qashqai, it is important to become extremely familiar with their characteristics.

A quality product purchased will last for many years, and driving a car will be soft, smooth, comfortable, and, most importantly, safe.

Pressure measurement

Remember the last time you checked the tire pressure of your car? You may remember that you recently changed your summer tires to winter ones, so there is no need to worry. How many atmospheres were pumped into you during the replacement? You don’t know this, and this is not surprising, because Russian specialists usually determine pressure “by eye”. Driving instructors strongly recommend monitoring this important indicator constantly.

The recommended tire pressure for Hyundai Solaris is 2.2 Bar or 32 psi for both front and rear wheels. Translated into units that are more understandable to us, this will be about 2.2 atmospheres. It should be added that experts recommend monitoring tire pressure simultaneously with refueling the car. Such frequent monitoring will help avoid rapid tire wear and thus save money.

The pressure level in Hyundai Solaris tires is traditionally recommended by the manufacturer and varies depending on the type and size of tires installed on the car. In most cases, the manufacturer indicates the recommendations on a plate that is fixed in the driver's door opening, or in the operating instructions. You should not follow the generally accepted opinion that nothing useful is written in the instructions.
