I am in the business of selecting cars. I am often asked which car to choose under 400 thousand rubles. They want it not to break down, to be comfortable and in a couple of years to be easily sold. I have prepared a list of seven such cars. Choose what suits you best.

Expensive vs Budget

Before you start your search, you need to decide what kind of budget you have. All subsequent steps and options that you can look at depend on this. And thereby avoid models that do not fit the budget or are downright cheap rubbish.

Alas, in our time it is almost impossible to find a decent car under 100 thousand rubles. And this is even if we look at the budget segment.

If you raise the bar to 250 thousand rubles, the situation will become more interesting. But still there is nothing new for this money.

Even when the budget is 2 million, spending it on the first car is wrong. Understand that this is a starter car designed to improve your skills. Mistakes cannot be avoided. Be sure of this. Scuffs, dents, cracks, broken headlights, damaged bumpers will certainly be the result of use until the driver reaches the required level of skill.

I think many will feel sorry for even just scratching a car that costs 2 million. Plus, imagine how much maintenance and repairs will cost.

Mitsubishi Lancer X

I awarded seventh place to the Lancer for its practicality. The main scourge of the most popular Mitsu engines, 1.5 l and 1.6 l, is oil burn. Due to the lack of power, drivers squeeze all the juice out of the car - the engine life rarely exceeds 150 thousand km without capital. Other engines of the 4B family are 1.8 l and 2.0 l. They are more reliable and last 200-250 thousand km without problems.

The weak point of the Lancer is the variator, which “lives” about 150 thousand km. Its main problem is cooling. My advice is to consider the good old manual or a dull but reliable automatic (versions with a 1.5 and 1.6 liter engine).

The car was assembled in Japan, so there are no questions about the paintwork, but original spare parts, despite the budget price of the car, are expensive.

Over the past three months, Lancer has been checked 28 thousand times through avtocod.ru. Only every tenth car had no problems. Every third one was beaten, every fourth had unpaid fines or lost mileage. There were also examples with restrictions, in collateral and after a taxi.

Mitsubishi Colt

It is smaller than the previous option, which means you can find a younger representative, for example, at the age of 4-5 years, who has driven about 65 thousand km. The fact that this is a Japanese brand speaks for itself. Reliability is guaranteed, of course, if the previous owner was smart.

2007 Hyundai Accent

And what? Quite a good option:

Renault Sandero 2

I put “Sandero” in sixth place. I’ll say right away that I included it on the list only because of the love of our motorists. The aesthetic appearance of the car, to put it mildly, is not very good.

It came to the Russian market with two engines - 1.2 liters (75 hp) and 1.6 liters (86-102 hp). Both are reliable, unpretentious, and inexpensive to operate. It is better to replace the timing belt every 60 thousand km.

I wouldn't rush into choosing a box. The car was equipped with a five-speed manual, automatic and robotic gearbox. With the mechanics, problems begin at rpms above 3,000. It begins to buzz and vibrations appear. Most likely, this is a design flaw in the car. Otherwise the manual transmission is reliable. I recommend servicing it once every 50 thousand km.

The machine is prone to overheating, and this leads to rapid wear of parts and sudden death of the unit.

“Robot” outdid everyone and became the worst decision. It is terribly slow, jerks at start-up, and its clutch dies early.

Otherwise, the Sandero is a good workhorse that you can easily buy and sell. Through avtocod.ru, the car has been hit 11,281 times over the past three months. Most of them were sold broken; every second car had no problems.

Ford Focus 3

I give fifth place to the “C” student. Among the options, it has a dual-zone climate control system, a stabilization system, parking sensors, multimedia, etc., and among power units - 2.0 liters (150 hp) and 1.6 liters (85, 105 and 125 hp). The most capricious engine is the two-liter one. It suffers from excessive vibration, which leads to wear on the engine mounts.

A common problem with engines is clogged injectors and coked valves. Sometimes it occurs already at 40 thousand km. While injectors can be cleaned with ultrasound, it will not be possible to clean the valves without opening the engine.

Of the boxes, the most problematic is the PowerShift “robot” with a dry clutch, which comes with a 1.6 liter and 2.0 liter engine. The manual transmission is reliable. The only thing I can complain about is the loud operation in neutral. This is her peculiarity, nothing more.

In the third generation, Focus did not get rid of the breakpoint in the steering rack. Unscrupulous servicemen undertake repairs, thereby deceiving the consumer. But this is a design flaw that cannot be eliminated, just like the short clutch life, overheating, jerking and jerking when switching.

Over the past three months, Focus has been checked about 68 thousand times through avtocod.ru. Only 5% of cars were sold without problems. Most were offered after an accident.

Mazda 3 (BK)

The Troika is the most driver-friendly car on today’s list. She has good steering, good dynamics and a pleasant appearance. The problems lie in the manufacturer’s efforts to make everything cheaper. The paintwork is lame on both legs, and the body is susceptible to corrosion.

Everything in the cabin is ergonomic, everything is at hand and at the level of instincts. Most of the stones in her garden came from the creaking of cheap plastic. The ride does not cause any complaints. It is inexpensive to maintain and has no problems.

Mazda is one of those few cases where an automatic is more reliable than a manual, but it doesn’t like dirty oil. Have pity on the automatic transmission and your budget, because a used unit costs about 60 thousand rubles. On a manual transmission, the clutch quickly dies.

The most popular engines in the Russian Federation are 1.6 l and 2.0 l. Both are reliable, they run for 150-200 thousand km without intervention. Among the minor problems, I would highlight the poor crankcase ventilation system, regular cleaning of the cooling system, and the death of the 1.6 liter throttle valve. Otherwise, “Zoom-Zoom” will give a lot of positive emotions.

I confidently give third place to Polo. It doesn’t have any major problems, it has a bunch of minor flaws and childhood problems: a weak lock cylinder on the driver’s door, a very weak “TV” that can be easily broken by a slight impact, constant burnout of lamps in the dimensions, souring of the window regulator bushing.

In our budget we will only fit dorest with 1.6 liter engines of 85 and 105 horsepower. Their unpleasant feature is a break in the piston when cold, which goes away after warming up. The deficiency does not affect the service life of the motor.

“Polo” easily runs 300-400 thousand km without capital. The attachment cannot withstand such runs. The water pump is a consumable, it is replaced immediately with all the consequences. The plastic antifreeze tube behind the manifold also dies very often and quickly. The exhaust manifold cracks at the junction of the channels.

Both gearboxes—Aisin automatic transmission and manual transmission—run for a long time without any complaints. The main thing is to avoid overheating and not to tear it up.

In the suspension, there are obvious consumables - these are the front stabilizer struts, weak racks, and rear brakes. Otherwise, everything changes according to the regulations and depending on the operation.

Over the past three months, “Polo” has been struck 40 thousand times through avtocod.ru. Every third car was sold “clean”. Most were given away after an accident, some of the cars were sold on lease, collateral and after a taxi.

Hyundai Solaris and Kia Rio

Weak points of the suspension are wheel bearings and weak rear shock absorbers. These cars don’t have any more problems, but they are not the first because of the archaic interior and quality. Everything is as cheap, uncomfortable, noisy, sluggish and simple as possible.
