One of the most important aspects of local repairs is the selection of paint colors. To solve this issue, it is better to use a computer selection or try to compose the paint yourself according to the formula, but for this you need to have all the necessary components. Precisely selected paint will allow you to partially paint your car with minimal costs for materials.

During local repairs, not the entire part is painted, but only part of it, which allows you to save paint and varnish materials. However, with such repairs, the problem of joining the old and new paint arises. The slightest differences in shade will be visible if the so-called transition is not performed.

Painting with a transition involves applying a smooth gradient by stretching the joint and reducing the intensity of spraying. As a result, the old paint will gradually appear under the new, and the transition will be so smooth that it will be completely unnoticeable.

When doing local repairs of varnished parts, the issue of joining the varnish becomes a question. The problem is that in order to bond the hardened layer of varnish, it must be sanded (made matte). The gloss of the new varnish often peels off. However, when you need to paint with a stain, you will still have to put a new varnish on top of the old gloss somewhere.

In order for the new varnish to bond well with the old one at the joining point when painting with a spot or transition, it is necessary to disperse it over a larger area with an increase in the proportion of solvent. This way we don't create a sharp boundary between the base layer and the overlay layer. After polishing, if everything is done correctly, the varnish layer looks uniform.

Also, when painting locally, it may be necessary to transfer to an adjacent part. Typically these are cases where the damage is located on the edge of the part. Switching to an adjacent part may also be necessary when painting the entire part, for example, when the selected shade is slightly different, as happens when selecting metallic.

It is most difficult to carry out local repairs if complex paints are used, for example, with the addition of xerallic. If Xeralik was used as part of external tuning, then usually a certain supply of paint is left in case of local repairs. Or you need to write down the exact paint formula indicating the brands of all ingredients.

Paint selection

The following enamels are used to paint most cars:

1. Acrylic. Simple plain enamel at an affordable price. When using it, it is quite possible to paint a car cheaply.
2. Metallic is a more common paint than acrylic. It looks more interesting, and therefore costs more.
3. Xeralik (chameleon). Elite paints, the so-called three-layer paints (base, paint, varnish), are used less frequently due to their high cost.

The first option involves using a minimum of consumables. Painting with acrylic paint does not require much skill, so it is relatively easy to do yourself. All you need to do is practice using a spray gun a little and you can start painting.

On a note

The most important thing is to feel the moment of overflow. If there is too much paint, it will start to flow, which is very unpleasant. Therefore, it is better to go through the spray gun one more time than to bother with removing smudges.

Metallic painting requires some experience. The fact is that shiny particles of aluminum powder, in particular their position, largely determine the visual effect of the perception of shade and brightness of color. Each layer of metallic base paint is applied from a different distance. Another difficulty lies in the fact that painting flaws appear already under the varnish, and then it is not easy to correct them.

At the same time, it cannot be said that working with metallics is beyond the reach of amateurs. Today there are many training videos that help you gain some kind of experience without even touching the spray gun. Having acquired a certain amount of knowledge, learning to work with metallics is a completely doable task.

You shouldn’t be afraid of xerallic, especially if the artist has already mastered acrylic and metallic well. Xeralic powder can be added to various paints to achieve the desired effect. Although this material is expensive, you need very little of it, unless, of course, the task is to make a New Year's toy out of your car.

Removing old paintwork

Preparing a car for painting begins with removing the old coating. Initially at this stage the following actions are carried out:

• Car body wash;
• Defect detection;
• Removing old paintwork

Washing a car is a mandatory process. It must be carried out to remove dust, dirt, various oxides, salts, oil bitumen, oil deposits and other chemically aggressive compounds from the surface. When reagents come into contact with metal, a slow but prolonged reaction may subsequently occur. In particular, gases may be released that will eventually cause air bubbles to form under the new paint. To avoid having to redo everything, it is better to thoroughly wash the car body with car shampoo and then rinse with plain water.

Preparing for painting

After washing, the body is thoroughly dried, all removable parts and components are dismantled. The surface is inspected for defective areas that need correction. Areas where cracks, breaks, dents, chips, etc. are found are noted.

Next, local cleaning is carried out in the designated areas to be painted using hand and/or power tools - removing the old coating. At this stage of preparation for painting, it is important to choose sandpaper or other abrasive material with the desired grit. Steel, aluminum, plastic - they all differ in density and have different surface hardness. Therefore, each of them requires the selection of a safe operating mode.
