Changing the oil in a Renault Logan box: how much and what kind of lubricant needs to be filled

Renault Duster manual transmission oil

In accordance with the recommendations of the automaker, in cars with a manual transmission it is worth using ELF TRANSELF NFJ 75W80 gear oil. It has high fluidity at low temperatures, making it easier to shift gears in the cold, but still maintains sufficient viscosity at high temperatures. A complex of special additives provides reliable protection of gear teeth even under very high loads, which allows the use of this oil in Renault Duster 4×4 gearboxes that are used in off-road conditions. Thanks to its oxidation resistance, ELF TRANSELF NFJ 75W80 effectively protects transmission elements from wear and corrosion throughout their entire service life. It is officially recommended by Renault as a transmission oil for Duster with manual transmission.

Automatic transmission oil Renault Duster

Which oil to use in the Renault Duster 2.0 automatic transmission is regulated by the automaker's regulations. Renault recommends ELF RENAULTMATIC D3 SYN fluid for Duster with automatic transmission. It has friction properties specially selected taking into account the materials of the parts used in DP0 gearboxes. This allows you to achieve maximum transmission of torque to the wheels and smooth shifting in all driving modes. Reliable protection of the transmission from wear and corrosion allows you to extend its life when using this oil in the Renault Duster 2.0 automatic transmission. ELF RENAULTMATIC D3 SYN has good compatibility with all seal materials, low tendency to foam and high thermal and oxidative stability, therefore maintaining optimal performance throughout the entire oil life recommended by the automaker in the Renault Duster 4x4 gearbox.

Complete replacement of transmission fluid in automatic transmission

The manufacturer indicates in the Renault Duster operating manual that the lubricant must be changed after 150 thousand kilometers.
Residents of Europe can comply with this regulation. For Russia, experts and experienced mechanics, thanks to many years of testing, indicate different numbers. The table below shows the mileage after which the oil in the box should be changed.

Replacement typeKilometers (km)
Partial30 000 – 40 000
Full60 000 – 80 000

During a partial change of fluid in a car’s automatic transmission, the first signs of depletion and loss of properties are already observed in the lubricant. The oil changes color from light to darker, and its consistency becomes similar to diluted syrup.

If the car owner reached 80 thousand kilometers and did not replace the transmission fluid in the Renault Duster, then by this time the oil becomes black in color. If you look closely at the liquid on a napkin or in a drainage container, you will notice many metallic inclusions. These are wear products.

In this case, the filter device must be replaced. And submit the Renault Duster vehicle for technical inspection at the service center. Since further operation may lead to failure of the entire automatic transmission.

If the car was operated in extreme conditions, then the terms should be lowered. Extreme conditions mean the following:

  • long off-road mileage;
  • towing heavy loads or towing the Renault Duster itself for a long time;
  • driving in the city, constant starts and stops between traffic lights, traffic jams;
  • cold season with extremely low temperatures.

If a car owner decides to independently change the oil in a Renault Duster automatic transmission, then experts advise choosing the original transmission fluid. Since Chinese counterfeits do not have the same technical properties that the manufacturer equips their own lubricant with.

Original oil

Syn has good compatibility with all mechanical parts, as well as rubber gaskets in Renault Duster automatic transmissions. The advantages of this oil for the gearbox of the described vehicle are:

  • friction properties selected by the manufacturer as a result of many years of testing;
  • helping to increase torque to maximum level;
  • reduction of shocks and jerks of the automatic transmission during acceleration and gear shifting, which is a feature of the Al4 automatic transmission;
  • maintaining temperature and saving automatic transmission from overheating;
  • eliminating foaming.

If the car owner does not have this oil in his city, it is recommended to turn to analogues.

Analogs

Experts recommend taking an analogue that is completely identical to the original in properties. Shell Helix Ultra belongs to this type. This oil is suitable for the Renault Duster automatic transmission.

This type of oil does not cause overheating of the machine and has a positive effect on gear shifts when accelerating. The life of the box is also extended when using this oil.

To change the transmission fluid in a Renault Duster automatic, you will need the following materials:

  • original oil based on Dexron 3. For a partial replacement you need 4 liters, for a complete replacement - 8 liters;
  • gasket for pallet (No. 144002). A complete Overol repair kit is used;
  • Al4 filter under catalog number 144010;
  • five-liter canister;
  • funnel;
  • silicone;
  • gloves;
  • drain container with marks for measuring the drained liquid from the box;
  • lint-free cloth.

After preparing all the necessary tools, you can start changing the oil.

If the car owner does not have the money to completely replace the lubricant in the automatic transmission, then you can do a partial one yourself. The process is easy and any car owner can handle it.

At the very beginning, it is necessary to drain the waste liquid.

Draining old oil

To replace old oil with new one, the used lubricant must be drained. Steps for draining waste fluid:

  1. Warm up the automatic transmission. Start the Renault Duster engine and drive about five kilometers. To ensure that the oil gets into all the components, if the car has been standing for a long time, you can do so without moving. To do this, you need to press the brake pedal and move the selector handle through all positions of the box. Then set the slide again to the “Parking” mode.
  2. Drive onto a pit or overpass.
  3. Remove the protection from the bottom of the machine. Place a container to drain the liquid.
  4. Unscrew the drain plug and wait until all the oil drains out.
  5. Unscrew all the bolts of the pan and remove it. Do this carefully, as it can contain up to half a liter of lubricant.

Now you need to start cleaning the tray.

To ensure that the clean oil is not affected in any way by the old fluid, each removed component must be thoroughly rinsed. Experts recommend removing burnt deposits, metal shavings and wear products from mechanical parts.

After the pan is washed, remove the old gasket and degrease the area. Install a new one, placing it on silicone.

Replacing the filter

Now you need to replace the oil filter. The procedure for replacing the filter device is as follows:

  1. Unscrew the three bolts that hold it in place.
  2. Remove and install new one.

After this, you need to reassemble everything in the reverse order and start filling in new transmission fluid.

After all components have been replaced, you need to start adding fresh lubricant.

  1. Open the hood.
  2. Unscrew the plug on the filler hole.
  3. Insert one end of the hose into the hole and the other end of the funnel.
  4. Pour 4 liters of lubricant into the Renault Duster automatic transmission.
  5. Screw the plug. Now you need to check the oil level.
  6. Start the Renault Duster engine.
  7. Warm up the automatic transmission. Move the gear selector through all selector positions and return to the “Parking” mode.
  8. Unscrew the drain plug of the gearbox.
  9. If a powerful stream runs out, it means the oil has been overfilled. It should be drained a little.
  10. If it drips from the hole, then the lubricant level is normal.

When a partial change of the transmission fluid on the Duster has been completed, and the car owner has driven another 30 thousand kilometers, then it is necessary to make a full replacement.

The procedure for a complete change is identical to the procedure for a partial oil change in a Renault Duster automatic transmission. The process steps are as follows:

  1. Repeat all sections of the partial lubricant change until the “Filling new oil” block, point No. 6.
  2. If there is no high-pressure apparatus in the garage, then you need to remove the return hose from the radiator pipe.
  3. Stick it into the neck of a five-liter bottle.
  4. Ask your partner to start the car. Dark liquid will flow out of the hose.
  5. Wait until it changes color to light.
  6. Turn off the engine. Insert the hose back into the radiator.
  7. Add the same amount of lubricant as was poured into the bottle.
  8. Screw in the grease fill plug. Close the hood and start the engine.
  9. Drive about five kilometers without loading the automatic transmission and engine.
  10. Check the amount of oil in the Renault Duster automatic as described in the “Checking the oil level” block.

If everything is normal, then the car owner has successfully completed his task.

For reliable operation of the Renault Duster gearbox, regardless of the type of drive and gearbox, it is necessary to periodically monitor the quality of the oil and change it if necessary. Manufacturers' tales about “eternal” oils that last their entire service life end with the first bad bearing and the first leaking oil seal. Therefore, an oil change in the Renault Duster gearbox is necessary. When to change and what kind of oil to fill is another question.

Changing the oil in a Duster box is not much different from a similar operation in other cars, however, there are several nuances

First, let's look at the oil change process itself. There is nothing complicated here and for work you only need a container for draining the waste, a hex key for the drain plug, and a filling syringe. If you don’t have a syringe, you can build a device from a plastic bottle and a Ø 10 mm hose, checking the tightness of the connections of its parts. Next we do this:

After the replacement, we start the engine, do a test drive (20-40 km) and check the oil level again by unscrewing the control plug. If necessary, add more. Once again we inspect the gearbox for leaks and drive quietly until the next replacement.

Changing the oil in the gearbox, transfer case and gearbox. — Renault Duster, 2.0 l., 2020 on DRIVE2

I was not satisfied with the operation of the gearbox, 1st and 2nd gears were often switched on “butt”; in winter, work with the car began with stirring the oil in the box (I got the feeling that there was not liquid oil inside, but a gel). Having also read horror stories about underfilling from the factory, I decided, out of harm’s way, to change the oils.
