The difference between a crossover and an SUV in terms of characteristics. What is the difference between a crossover and an SUV? What is an SUV car?

SUV

(eng. off-road vehicle - off-road vehicle) is a cross-country vehicle on severe off-road conditions due to high ground clearance, wide tires, and all-wheel drive (driving front and rear wheels). Often in everyday life they are briefly called “jeeps”.

According to the definition of the Great Soviet Encyclopedia, the term “off-road” is defined as:

According to cross-country ability, Cars are divided into on-road, off-road (quarry) and off-road and cross-country vehicles. ... Off-road vehicles, having increased overall dimensions and axle loads, can only be used on special roads, for example in quarries.

The opinion of the auto magazine “Behind the Wheel” on this matter is quite interesting - “clean” SUVs have no place on public roads:

The so often used term “SUV” - more precisely, “off-road vehicle” - is not entirely correct, since it has always meant those vehicles that are prohibited from driving on public roads. These include BelAZ mining dump trucks, oversized tractors, rocket carriers and other military equipment.

As a result, “true off-road vehicles” are not allowed to use the roads according to traffic regulations. However, the definition of an SUV is not specified there at all, limiting itself only to the definition of a vehicle:

“Motor driven vehicle” is a vehicle, other than a moped, driven by an engine. The term also applies to any tractors and self-propelled machines.

By the way, the Chrysler automobile corporation insists on the term “allroad” instead of the classically familiar “jeep”. The reason is simple - Chrysler owns the above trademark
