Original Oil 5w30 Honda: characteristics, recommendations

It's always great when a car is new. There is no need to think about its maintenance. It is under warranty, all you have to do is take it to the dealer, pay the money and pick up the car after some time. Things get worse when the warranty ends. You need to choose your own consumables, repair service, or do it yourself. Owners of a Honda CR-V often wonder which engine oil is best to use for their vehicle. Manufacturers recommend using original Honda Ultra Ltd 5W30 SM engine oil for B20B engines.

Recommended oils

Engine oil Honda Ultra Ltd 5W30 SM is an original Japanese lubricant, which is mainly intended for power units of Honda CR-V cars.

Semi-synthetic motor oil is intended for four-stroke engines, both gasoline and diesel. The classification allows it to be universal and used under different climatic conditions and temperatures. Regardless of the load and complexity of operation, it has excellent lubricating properties. In addition, antioxidant components protect the insides of the engine from corrosion and the formation of harmful slags and sludges.

The next engine oil that the manufacturer recommends is Honda Ultra Ltd 5W30 SN. It is more modern and has replaced the SM brand.

It began to be produced in 2011. It is based on hydrocracking synthetics, which in no way impairs the beneficial properties of motor oil, but only improves them. In terms of quality, it is no worse than conventional synthetics, and in some situations and specific operating conditions it even surpasses it.

Both options were developed by the concern directly for its cars. The following are included in production:

  1. High quality base oil.
  2. Modern production technologies that are improved every year.
  3. Latest developments.
  4. The most advanced additives and impurities.

All this allows us to produce a well-balanced, complex lubricating fluid for Honda CR-V engines.

Both versions of Honda Ultra lubricants have approvals:

  • API SN;
  • ILSAC GF-5;
  • SAE 5W30.

Honda approved.

How much oil should be poured, what is the replacement schedule?

Oil change intervals must be strictly observed. Engineers at Honda Motor Co., Ltd believe that in Russian conditions, all oils (except 0w20) should be changed every 5,000 or 10,000 km (this is under “ideal” conditions, which do not exist almost anywhere today, even in Japan itself).

Taking into account the many years of experience of domestic Honda drivers, we can come to the conclusion that 0w20 oil should be changed every 7,500 km. The mileage recommended by some dealers, sometimes reaching up to 15,000 km “from replacement to replacement,” clearly does not stand up to criticism!

It also happens that after a couple of replacements with excellent oil with a viscosity of 5w40 or 5w50, the “civilian” K20/24 engine completely fails, resulting in expensive repairs. This can be avoided by following the manufacturer's recommendations.

How much oil will you need? According to the manual, to change the oil in a 2.0 liter engine you will need 3.7, and for a 2.4 engine - 4.2 liters of new oil. In practice, errors cannot be avoided, and it is better to always have a small supply of oil.

Other lubricants

Another engine oil recommended by the Honda manufacturer is Mobil 1 5W-30. This synthetic lubricant has good properties and qualities that are necessary for a Japanese engine.

Excellent for all Honda engines, regardless of the year of manufacture, volume and fuel used (gasoline, gas, diesel fuel) Honda Gold oil. Unfortunately, despite all the positive qualities and good protective properties, this product is not popular among domestic owners of the famous brand. Firstly, it is rare on the Russian market and therefore very difficult to obtain. Secondly, the price, which is not small, is deterring.

Recently, a huge number of oils have appeared on the automotive markets that meet the approval certificates and tolerance standards for Honda CR-V engines. Therefore, you can use almost anything, the most important thing is that it meets the requirements: API SM/CF; ACEA A3/B4; and of course Honda.

Honda engine oil 0w20

This type of lubricant can be purchased in a 4-liter tin, article number - 0821799974. A special feature of this oil is its reduced viscosity: it has minimal resistance, thanks to which cooling occurs much faster, making it easier to start the engine in winter. These properties make it possible to improve torque, since resistance due to friction between spare parts becomes minimal, and fuel consumption is reduced.

Compared to oil with a viscosity of 5W-30, Honda 0w20 engine oil allows you to reduce fuel consumption by 1.5%, which is noticeable over long runs. In addition, the parts are subject to less wear, so the engine lasts longer than the period stated by the manufacturer and fails less often. The following positive qualities can be highlighted:

  • Suitable for modern engines that have a large number of bearings, the oil facilitates friction of moving parts, reduces PSI load.
  • Honda 0w20 engine oil allows you to achieve a smooth surface of parts, close existing microcracks, ensuring excellent gliding.
  • The gaps between the parts will decrease, which will increase the efficiency of the motor.
  • The oil has a reduced viscosity, so it does not get stuck in the channels and is supplied to the components in the required quantity. This is especially true for cars like the Honda Civic and Isight, as the gap in the channels is up to 0.0095 inches. Too thick oil or products from other brands can clog the path, and the engine will begin to experience oil starvation, which can lead to serious damage, the repair of which will be expensive.
  • Starting the engine at zero occurs faster, since the product has a reduced viscosity, the liquid quickly enters the components, lubricating them and making work easier, due to this, engine wear is reduced. It is when starting the engine that the main wear occurs, since this procedure accounts for 75% of the load.
  • The oil is suitable for hybrid engines. The peculiarity of such a motor is that it constantly turns on and off, thereby increasing the wear of parts.
  • The lubricant guarantees effective cooling of the unit and removes excess heat, making it much more productive than types of oil whose viscosity is increased compared to the product in question.

Application area

The manufacturer recommends replacing the lubricant in the engine of a Honda CR-V rd1 model from 1997 to the present day no later than 8,000 kilometers. In case of heavy use and difficult climatic conditions, it is necessary to replace it earlier, at 6000 kilometers. With heavy workload and major trips outside the city, it is allowed to change every 10,000 kilometers.

In the event that there is a change in different manufacturers of engine oil, it is necessary to flush the engine. To do this, you can use any flushing liquid designed for this purpose.

Before installing a new filter, it is necessary to fill it with oil. Having installed it, engine oil is poured through the neck of the valve cover. It is necessary to fill to the required level; there are minimum and maximum marks on the dipstick. The lubricant level should be in the middle.

About HONDA B20B (Z) engine for Honda C-RV

ENGINE HONDA B20B (Z)

The B20B engine is the most popular and largest representative of the B series from Honda. Representatives of this series are based on an aluminum cylinder block with steel liners. The engine has a twin-shaft head with sixteen valves.

The timing drive uses a belt, which requires timely replacement to prevent it from breaking. The engine does not have hydraulic compensators, so it is necessary to periodically adjust the valves. In general, the engine is as ordinary as possible, without any bells and whistles.

Even the VTEC variable valve timing system is missing. The B20B engines were updated and modified several times, which was the reason for the existence of several modifications. The initial versions of the engine had a power of 128 hp, since 1998, the engines of most models produced 147 hp, Japanese representatives 145 hp, other variations 150 hp. The engines, representatives of the B series, are quite rightly recognized as perhaps the most reliable and undemanding engines from Honda.

This is primarily due to the absence of real weaknesses. The only things that can be noted are the fragility of camshaft seals, problems with the cylinder head gasket with significant mileage, periodic problems with the pump and thermostat, which can lead to overheating. Otherwise, the engine is quite reliable, and if properly maintained, it works for a long time and without complaints.

The B20B engine can easily run for about 300 thousand km and more. In cases where the engine still requires major repairs, having exhausted its service life, a reasonable solution would be to purchase a contract B20B engine at a more than affordable price. The B20B engine was installed on cars until 2001, after which it was replaced by the brand new K20A.

TUNING OPPORTUNITIES

The most common, rational, reasonable and actually working type of tuning of the B20B engine is the ability to install a VTEC cylinder head from the B16. This modification can significantly increase the efficiency of the engine and help increase its power. At the same time, such an upgrade will not cause significant damage to the resource and will not make the engine less reliable. To carry out this modification, you need to get a head from B16 or B18, ARP studs, Hondata for tuning and other little things, in the end you can count on 170-180 hp.

If the restyled version of the engine was modified (produced since 1999), you can count on 190 hp. If you want to get the maximum, you need to replace the pistons with WISECO (or similar ones) with a compression ratio of 12 or higher, porting the head, the presence of Skunk2 Stage 2 camshafts, the presence of lightweight valves, a cold intake with a large flap, a Skunk2 receiver, injectors with a capacity of 300 -360 ss.

In addition, it is necessary to use a Walbro 255 lph fuel pump, 4-2-1 exhaust with 63 pipes. As a result, we get approximately 240 atmospheric forces, with standard shafts less, with evil ones a little more, but there is no need to turn it up too much. Further experiments will require quite significant expenses.

Advantages of poured oil

Of course, many will not follow the advice of the Honda concern and will fill the engine of their CR-V with the same motor oil that they have used before or that their friends recommended to them. There will be nothing wrong with this, but the main thing is that it has the following advantages:

  • not thermally oxidized;
  • maintain characteristics and properties at different temperatures;
  • have dispersion and cleaning properties;
  • during use, protect parts from wear;
  • counteract the formation of harmful deposits;
  • work efficiently on a cold engine;
  • reduce vibration;
  • make the engine run quieter.

All this will extend the life of the car’s power unit.
